INTRODUCTION

Topic: Entrepreneurial Innovation and Business Sustainability among Small and Medium Enterprises: A Case Study of SMEs in Ikeja, Lagos State

1.1 Background to the Study

Entrepreneurial innovation has become an important factor in the survival, growth and long-term sustainability of businesses, particularly in an economy characterised by changing consumer preferences, technological advancement, intense competition and economic uncertainty. Innovation enables entrepreneurs to identify new opportunities, develop improved products and services, introduce efficient production methods and adopt better approaches to managing business operations. For small and medium enterprises (SMEs), innovation is particularly important because they often operate with limited financial resources, relatively small workforces and restricted access to advanced technology. These limitations make it necessary for SME owners and managers to continually explore creative ways of improving their business activities. Schumpeter (1934) explained that innovation is a central force of economic development because entrepreneurs introduce new combinations of resources through new products, production methods, markets and organisational arrangements. Similarly, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Eurostat (2018) identified product, process, marketing and organisational innovation as important dimensions through which businesses introduce significant improvements in their operations and market activities. This suggests that entrepreneurial innovation is not simply about inventing new products; it also involves finding better ways to organise, deliver and sustain business activities.

Business sustainability, on the other hand, concerns the ability of an enterprise to maintain its operations, remain financially viable, respond to changes in its environment and create value over an extended period. It goes beyond short-term profit-making to include the responsible management of economic, social and environmental resources. An enterprise may record impressive sales in the short term but still face sustainability problems if it cannot control operating costs, retain customers, manage its workforce, respond to competition or adapt to changes in the business environment. Elkington (1997), through the triple bottom line framework, emphasised that sustainable business practices should consider economic prosperity, social responsibility and environmental protection. Hart (1995) also argued that environmental capabilities and resource-based strategies can provide firms with opportunities for competitive advantage. These perspectives indicate that business sustainability requires organisations to balance profitability with responsible resource utilisation and long-term organisational development. For SMEs, this balance is essential because their continued existence contributes to employment generation, household income, local economic activities and the development of entrepreneurship.

Small and medium enterprises occupy an important position in Nigeria’s economic structure because they contribute to employment, income generation, innovation and the development of local markets. They provide opportunities for individuals to establish businesses in sectors such as trading, manufacturing, transportation, hospitality, professional services, information technology and personal services. SMEs also support larger organisations by supplying goods, distributing products and providing specialised services. However, the contribution of these enterprises depends significantly on their ability to survive and remain productive in a challenging operating environment. The International Finance Corporation (IFC, 2017) recognised the importance of small businesses in developing economies, particularly in relation to employment and economic participation, while the OECD and Eurostat (2018) established that innovation supports business competitiveness by helping firms improve products, processes and organisational practices. In Nigeria, the importance of SMEs makes their sustainability a matter of concern to business owners, financial institutions, policymakers and the wider society. Consequently, entrepreneurial innovation deserves attention as a possible means of strengthening the ability of SMEs to withstand operational difficulties and remain competitive.

In the Nigerian business environment, SMEs face several challenges that can weaken their ability to sustain operations. These include limited access to affordable finance, unstable electricity supply, high operating costs, inadequate infrastructure, multiple regulatory obligations, changing government policies, inflationary pressure and competition from larger businesses. Such challenges can reduce the resources available for investment in new products, modern equipment, staff development and improved business processes. Nevertheless, businesses that adopt innovative approaches may be better positioned to manage some of these difficulties. For instance, process innovation can help an enterprise reduce waste and improve service delivery, while marketing innovation can enable a business to reach new customers through digital platforms and alternative distribution channels. Organisational innovation may also improve internal coordination, employee responsibilities and managerial decision-making. The resource-based view of the firm, as developed by Barney (1991), explains that valuable, rare, difficult-to-imitate and well-organised resources can contribute to sustained competitive advantage. From this perspective, the knowledge, creativity, entrepreneurial skills and innovative capabilities of SME owners and employees can serve as important resources for maintaining business sustainability, particularly where financial and physical resources are limited.

Entrepreneurial innovation can be expressed through several dimensions, including product innovation, process innovation, marketing innovation and organisational innovation. Product innovation involves introducing new products or significantly improving existing products to meet changing customer needs. Process innovation focuses on improving the methods used in production, service delivery, inventory management and other business operations. Marketing innovation involves adopting new approaches to product promotion, pricing, packaging, branding and distribution, while organisational innovation concerns improvements in management practices, workplace arrangements, business relationships and internal coordination. The OECD and Eurostat (2018) explained that these forms of innovation provide a structured basis for understanding how firms introduce changes that improve their activities and performance. In the Nigerian context, Olayemi, Osobu and Ezebuiro (2023) examined innovation and entrepreneurial success among selected SMEs in Lagos State, focusing on product, process, marketing and administrative innovation. Their study reinforces the relevance of examining different innovation dimensions rather than treating innovation as a single business activity. Therefore, understanding how these dimensions relate to the long-term sustainability of SMEs is important for identifying the specific innovative practices that can strengthen their operations.

Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State provides a relevant setting for examining entrepreneurial innovation and business sustainability among SMEs. Ikeja is an important commercial and administrative centre within Lagos State, with businesses operating in retail and wholesale trade, hospitality, manufacturing, information technology, professional services, transportation and other commercial activities. The concentration of business activities creates opportunities for entrepreneurship but also exposes SMEs to competition, changing customer expectations, operating expenses and pressure to improve service quality. SMEs operating in this environment may need to introduce new products, improve service delivery, adopt digital marketing, manage resources more efficiently and develop stronger relationships with customers to remain competitive. Research by Ademosu and Akinola (2021) on entrepreneurial orientation and SME performance in Ikeja, Lagos State, examined innovation, proactiveness and risk-taking among 96 SMEs. The study indicated the importance of combining innovative behaviour with proactive business decisions and calculated risk-taking in achieving stronger enterprise performance. Although business performance and business sustainability are related, they are not identical: performance may reflect results within a particular period, whereas sustainability concerns the capacity to maintain viable operations over time. This distinction makes it necessary to investigate entrepreneurial innovation in relation to the longer-term continuity and resilience of SMEs in Ikeja.

Furthermore, empirical studies conducted in Lagos State have provided evidence that innovation is associated with important business outcomes, although the specific outcomes and innovation dimensions examined differ. Olayemi et al. (2023) investigated innovation and entrepreneurial success among selected Lagos SMEs, while Nnorom, Ikponmwonba and Enyinnaya (2022) examined innovation and competitiveness among selected SMEs in Lagos State. Similarly, Olawore et al. (2026) reported significant relationships between product, process and marketing innovation and SME productivity in Lagos State, although organisational innovation did not show a similar significant relationship in their analysis. These studies demonstrate that innovation can influence different aspects of enterprise outcomes, but productivity, competitiveness and entrepreneurial success do not fully explain whether SMEs can maintain their operations over the long term. Business sustainability also involves financial stability, the ability to retain customers, operational resilience, responsible resource management and continuous adaptation to market conditions. Therefore, there is a need to examine how entrepreneurial innovation relates specifically to business sustainability among SMEs operating in Ikeja, rather than assuming that improvements in short-term performance automatically guarantee long-term survival.

The relationship between entrepreneurial innovation and business sustainability is therefore an important subject for research and practical business development. Innovation may help SMEs improve their products, reduce operating costs, attract customers, respond to competition and develop new sources of revenue. However, adopting innovation may also require financial investment, technical knowledge, employee training and managerial commitment. Where these requirements are not properly managed, innovation initiatives may increase costs without producing the expected long-term benefits. The resource-based view of Barney (1991) provides a basis for understanding how internal capabilities can support sustained competitive advantage, while the triple bottom line perspective of Elkington (1997) highlights the need to consider economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability. In addition, the findings of recent Lagos-based studies, including Oiku (2024) on innovation and organisational resilience among SMEs and Onyemaobi, Abdul-Hameed and Ifere on innovation practices and the sustainability of manufacturing SMEs in Nigeria, demonstrate the growing relevance of innovation to enterprise continuity and resilience. Against this background, this study examines entrepreneurial innovation and business sustainability among small and medium enterprises in Ikeja, Lagos State, with particular attention to the ways in which innovative business practices may contribute to the continued operation, competitiveness and long-term viability of SMEs.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Small and medium enterprises are widely recognised as important contributors to economic development through employment generation, income creation, the provision of goods and services and the promotion of entrepreneurial activities. Despite their importance, many SMEs experience difficulties maintaining stable operations and achieving long-term business sustainability. Some enterprises struggle to remain competitive, retain customers, manage operating expenses and respond to changing market conditions. These challenges can lead to declining sales, reduced profitability, business contraction and, in severe cases, closure. In Ikeja, Lagos State, where SMEs operate in a competitive commercial environment, business owners are expected to respond continuously to customer expectations, technological changes and market pressures. However, not all enterprises possess the resources, knowledge or managerial capacity required to introduce innovative practices that can strengthen their long-term operations. This creates concern about the extent to which entrepreneurial innovation is being adopted by SMEs and whether such innovation is contributing meaningfully to their sustainability.

One major problem is that some SMEs continue to depend on traditional products, conventional methods of operation and familiar marketing approaches, even when changes in customer behaviour and market competition require new business strategies. Limited product development may prevent enterprises from responding effectively to changing consumer needs, while inefficient production and service-delivery processes can increase operating costs and reduce customer satisfaction. Inadequate marketing innovation may also restrict the ability of SMEs to reach new markets, build brand awareness and retain customers. Although innovation is often presented as a means of improving business competitiveness, the adoption of innovative practices may be restricted by inadequate finance, limited technical knowledge, insufficient infrastructure and resistance to organisational change. Olayemi et al. (2023) examined product, process, marketing and administrative innovation among selected SMEs in Lagos State, while Olawore et al. (2026) reported that certain innovation dimensions had significant relationships with SME productivity. However, evidence of improved productivity or entrepreneurial success does not automatically establish that SMEs can maintain stable operations over an extended period. The problem, therefore, is the need to establish how the different dimensions of entrepreneurial innovation relate to the sustainability of SMEs in Ikeja.

Another problem concerns the difficulty SMEs face in converting innovative activities into lasting business benefits. Introducing a new product, adopting digital marketing or purchasing modern equipment may require substantial financial resources, technical skills and continuous investment. Where these resources are unavailable, innovation may remain limited, irregular or difficult to maintain. Some businesses may introduce new practices without adequate market research, employee preparation or proper assessment of the costs and expected benefits. Such situations can expose enterprises to financial pressure and operational difficulties rather than improving their sustainability. Oiku (2024) examined innovation and organisational resilience among SMEs in Lagos State and reported a positive relationship between entrepreneurial innovativeness and organisational resilience. Similarly, Onyemaobi, Abdul-Hameed and Ifere examined innovation practices and sustainability among manufacturing SMEs in Nigeria, highlighting the relevance of innovation strategy and organisational culture. Nevertheless, the challenges of implementing and sustaining innovation may differ among enterprises according to their size, sector, financial capacity and operating location. It is therefore important to investigate the extent to which SMEs in Ikeja can overcome these constraints and use innovation to support financial stability, operational continuity and long-term business survival.

Furthermore, existing studies on SMEs in Lagos State have examined innovation in relation to entrepreneurial success, productivity, competitiveness, profitability and organisational resilience. While these studies provide useful insights, they do not remove the need for a focused examination of business sustainability among SMEs operating specifically in Ikeja. The local business environment, the nature of enterprise activities and the resources available to individual businesses may influence the extent to which innovation contributes to sustainability. For example, product innovation may be useful in one business sector, while process or marketing innovation may be more relevant in another. There is therefore a need to understand whether entrepreneurial innovation, considered through its product, process, marketing and organisational dimensions, contributes to the ability of SMEs in Ikeja to maintain their operations and remain viable over time. The central problem addressed by this study is the uncertainty surrounding the extent to which entrepreneurial innovation influences business sustainability among SMEs in Ikeja, Lagos State. The study consequently seeks to provide evidence on this relationship and identify how innovative business practices can support the continued existence and development of SMEs.
