Project – Entrepreneurial Orientation and Organisational Resilience of Hotels in Rivers State, Nigeria

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The hospitality industry plays a vital role in economic growth, job creation, and social development across the world. In Nigeria, the industry contributes significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and serves as a major driver of tourism, investment, and employment. Among the different components of the hospitality sector, the hotel industry remains the most visible and economically significant, providing lodging, dining, and leisure services to both domestic and international visitors (Okonkwo & Ogbu, 2020). In states like Rivers, which serves as a commercial hub in the Niger Delta region, the hotel sector has expanded over the years to cater to the growing demand generated by business travelers, oil and gas workers, and tourists. The sector’s contribution to state revenue, tourism growth, and community development cannot be overstated. However, despite its economic potential, the hotel industry in Rivers State continues to grapple with operational and environmental challenges that threaten its long-term sustainability.

The dynamic business environment in Rivers State has introduced several challenges that test the survival of hotel businesses. These include economic instability, insecurity, fluctuating exchange rates, changing customer expectations, and rising operational costs. The emergence of new technologies and digital platforms has also redefined how hotels operate, compelling managers to adopt more innovative strategies to remain competitive. In addition, the high rate of competition among both local and international hotel brands has increased the need for differentiation through quality service delivery, innovation, and customer engagement (Eze & Nwankwo, 2021). In such an unpredictable environment, organisational resilience becomes a vital strategic capability for hotel survival and sustained performance.

Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) provides a useful framework for understanding how firms can navigate environmental turbulence. Lumpkin and Dess (1996) define EO as a firm’s strategic posture that reflects its innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking tendencies in pursuit of growth and new opportunities. These three dimensions encourage firms to be forward-looking, creative, and willing to take calculated risks to secure long-term success. EO also encompasses a culture of adaptability and opportunity-seeking behavior that enables organisations to exploit emerging trends and overcome constraints (Covin & Wales, 2019). For the hotel sector, entrepreneurial orientation manifests in the introduction of new services, investment in digital marketing and management systems, staff empowerment, and proactive customer relationship strategies.

Organisational resilience, on the other hand, refers to the ability of an organisation to anticipate, prepare for, respond to, and adapt to disruptions in ways that ensure survival and growth (Duchek, 2020). A resilient organisation does not only recover from crises but learns from them to strengthen its operations. Within the hotel industry, resilience is demonstrated through flexible management, quick recovery from crises, continuous innovation, and the ability to sustain service quality even in turbulent conditions. For hotels in Rivers State, resilience means maintaining operational stability amidst challenges such as insecurity, economic downturns, and policy uncertainties. Without such resilience, hotels risk closure, loss of reputation, and financial instability.

The relevance of resilience in Nigeria’s hospitality industry became more pronounced following the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought unprecedented disruptions to global tourism and hospitality operations. During the lockdowns, hotels across the country faced drastic declines in occupancy rates, cancellations of bookings, and loss of revenue. In Rivers State, many hotels struggled to remain operational as travel restrictions and reduced business activities hit the industry hard (Nwosu & Iheduru, 2022). However, a few hotels that demonstrated strong entrepreneurial orientation—by adopting technology, diversifying services, and restructuring operations—managed to recover faster. This underscores the role of EO as a foundation for organisational resilience, enabling firms to adapt, innovate, and turn crises into opportunities.

Research evidence supports the argument that firms with high entrepreneurial orientation tend to exhibit stronger resilience and superior performance, especially in volatile environments (Sajid et al., 2021; Ojo & Alaka, 2020). EO promotes organisational learning, creativity, and the willingness to explore unconventional strategies for survival. Lengnick-Hall et al. (2011) also emphasize that resilience develops through continuous learning and innovation—key characteristics of entrepreneurial firms. Despite this evidence, many hotel operators in Rivers State remain conservative, focusing on short-term profitability rather than strategic adaptability. Their limited investment in innovation, staff development, and technology has constrained their ability to respond to shocks such as economic recessions and market disruptions (Opara & Chinedu, 2020).

This apparent gap between entrepreneurial orientation and organisational resilience forms the basis for scholarly inquiry. While the concepts of EO and resilience have been widely studied in manufacturing and service industries globally, there is limited empirical evidence within the Nigerian hospitality sector, particularly in Rivers State. The peculiarities of the region—such as its dependence on the oil economy, exposure to social unrest, and fluctuating tourism activity—make it a valuable case for understanding how entrepreneurial orientation influences resilience. The need to develop hotels that can withstand economic turbulence, adapt to technological change, and sustain service quality underscores the importance of this study.

Consequently, this study seeks to examine the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and organisational resilience among selected hotels in Rivers State, Nigeria. It aims to provide empirical insights into how dimensions such as innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking contribute to the capacity of hotels to withstand and recover from disruptions. By focusing on five selected hotels, the study intends to highlight best practices and strategic orientations that enhance survival, competitiveness, and long-term sustainability within the hospitality sector. The findings will not only contribute to academic discourse but also provide practical recommendations for hotel managers, policymakers, and entrepreneurs seeking to strengthen the resilience of Nigeria’s hospitality industry.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The Nigerian hotel industry operates in an environment marked by volatility and uncertainty, where businesses continually face economic, social, and political challenges. Economic instability, persistent inflation, and fluctuating exchange rates have increased operational costs and reduced customer purchasing power. Additionally, infrastructural deficiencies such as irregular power supply, poor transportation networks, and inadequate water systems add to the financial burden of running hotels. Security issues ranging from theft to kidnapping and social unrest have further undermined the stability of the hospitality sector, discouraging tourism and business travel. In Rivers State, these challenges are even more pronounced due to its dependence on the oil industry, periodic political crises, and growing competition among hospitality firms. Consequently, many hotels in the state struggle to maintain consistent operations, service quality, and profitability in the face of constant environmental pressure (Opara & Chinedu, 2020).

While a few hotels in Rivers State have shown remarkable adaptability through strategic innovation, digital transformation, and customer-oriented service diversification, a significant number have either downsized, restructured, or completely shut down due to their inability to cope with disruptions (Nwosu & Iheduru, 2022). Hotels that adopted online booking platforms, automated management systems, or expanded into new service areas were able to remain operational even during the economic downturns and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, others that remained rigid in their operations experienced severe declines in occupancy rates and customer loyalty. This disparity in performance highlights the existence of a strategic gap among hotel firms in Rivers State and raises critical questions about what strategic orientations or management philosophies enable certain hotels to remain resilient while others falter under the same conditions.

Entrepreneurial orientation (EO) has been widely recognized in management literature as a key factor influencing an organisation’s ability to adapt to and thrive amid environmental turbulence (Lumpkin & Dess, 2001; Covin & Wales, 2019). Firms that exhibit high levels of innovativeness are more likely to introduce new products, services, or processes that improve competitiveness. Similarly, proactive firms anticipate market changes and take advantage of emerging opportunities before competitors. Those with a strong risk-taking attitude tend to invest in novel ventures and technologies, positioning themselves for long-term success. In this light, EO serves as a foundation for building organisational resilience, as it fosters learning, flexibility, and continuous adaptation to changes in the external environment (Duchek, 2020).

Despite the theoretical and empirical links between entrepreneurial orientation and organisational resilience, evidence from the Nigerian hospitality industry remains limited. Few studies have explored how EO dimensions—innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking—directly contribute to the resilience and sustainability of hotels, particularly within Rivers State’s challenging socio-economic context. Many existing studies have focused on manufacturing and small-scale enterprises, neglecting the peculiarities of service-based industries like hospitality, where customer perception and service delivery play crucial roles in survival. Consequently, there exists a significant research gap in understanding how entrepreneurial orientation can help hotel firms in Rivers State withstand disruptions, sustain service quality, and recover from crises.

Furthermore, many hotels in Rivers State continue to adopt reactive management styles focused primarily on short-term profitability rather than long-term adaptability. These firms often prioritize immediate financial gains over strategic investment in innovation, technology, and employee development. Such a short-term orientation weakens their capacity to manage crises such as economic recessions, pandemics, and competitive market shifts. The lack of entrepreneurial culture and strategic foresight has left many hotels ill-prepared for sudden disruptions, making them vulnerable to collapse when faced with industry shocks.

Hence, the central problem this study seeks to address is the extent to which entrepreneurial orientation influences organisational resilience among hotels in Rivers State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study aims to determine whether hotels that exhibit higher levels of innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking demonstrate stronger resilience in maintaining operations, customer satisfaction, and profitability during periods of uncertainty. Addressing this problem will provide valuable insights into how entrepreneurial strategies can be harnessed to strengthen the sustainability and competitiveness of the hospitality industry in Rivers State and Nigeria at large.

H1: There is a significant relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and organisational resilience of hotels in Rivers State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for its contribution to both theory and practice within the fields of entrepreneurship, strategic management, and hospitality studies. Theoretically, it deepens the understanding of how entrepreneurial orientation (EO) contributes to the development of organisational resilience, particularly within the hospitality industry in emerging economies like Nigeria. By linking EO dimensions—innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking—to resilience outcomes, the study builds on established theoretical frameworks such as the Resource-Based View (RBV) and the Dynamic Capabilities Theory (Barney, 1991; Teece, 2007). These frameworks emphasize that a firm’s ability to survive and thrive in turbulent environments depends on its internal resources and its capacity to adapt and reconfigure those resources in response to environmental changes. The study therefore enriches existing literature by demonstrating how EO serves as an intangible capability that enhances organisational adaptability and competitive advantage.

Empirically, the study contributes to closing the knowledge gap regarding the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and organisational resilience in Nigeria’s hospitality sector. While previous studies have examined EO in manufacturing and small enterprises, very few have focused on the hotel industry, especially within the context of Rivers State. By providing context-specific evidence, the research will expand the body of empirical knowledge available to academics and practitioners, highlighting how entrepreneurial behaviour influences resilience among service-oriented businesses. This insight is particularly valuable in light of Nigeria’s unstable economic climate and the hospitality industry’s vulnerability to global and local disruptions such as pandemics, insecurity, and inflationary pressures.

Practically, the study will assist hotel managers and owners in Rivers State in adopting entrepreneurial management practices that strengthen their organisations’ resilience. Findings from the research will guide them in fostering innovation through product and service diversification, encouraging proactiveness by anticipating market trends, and cultivating a calculated risk-taking culture to exploit new opportunities. By doing so, hotel managers can enhance operational sustainability, maintain customer satisfaction, and achieve long-term profitability despite external challenges. These practical implications will also help hotels move away from short-term, reactive decision-making toward strategic adaptability and sustainability.

Furthermore, the study has significant implications for policymakers, government agencies, and tourism development boards in Nigeria. Understanding the role of entrepreneurial orientation in fostering resilience will help these stakeholders design policies, training, and capacity-building programmes that empower hotel operators to manage risks more effectively. Policymakers can also use the findings to develop support mechanisms such as tax incentives, innovation grants, and entrepreneurship development workshops aimed at enhancing competitiveness in the hospitality industry. Strengthening the resilience of hotels will not only improve their survival rate but also stimulate tourism growth, create employment, and boost local economies in states like Rivers.

The study also holds relevance for educational institutions and researchers. It will serve as a valuable reference material for students, academics, and future researchers exploring the intersection of entrepreneurship, strategic management, and organisational resilience in developing economies. The empirical evidence and conceptual insights derived from this study will contribute to academic discourse and encourage further studies that examine similar relationships in other sectors such as manufacturing, banking, and healthcare. By situating the research within the Nigerian context, it will help scholars develop models and frameworks that reflect the realities of African business environments.

Lastly, the study bears socio-economic significance. Enhancing resilience within the hotel industry will have ripple effects on the broader economy of Rivers State and Nigeria as a whole. A resilient hospitality sector contributes to job creation, tourism development, and foreign exchange earnings, while also promoting social stability through sustained business operations. In a region that faces economic volatility and security challenges, resilient hotels serve as pillars of community and economic continuity. Therefore, this study is not only relevant to organisational stakeholders but also to the wider society, as it provides insights into how entrepreneurial orientation can foster sustainable growth and economic resilience in Nigeria’s dynamic service sector.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study is geographically limited to Rivers State, Nigeria. It will focus on five selected hotels within Port Harcourt metropolis, representing different categories of hospitality businesses (luxury, mid-scale, and budget). Thematically, the study covers three core dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation—innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking—and their relationship with organisational resilience.
