INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The rapid advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) has significantly transformed teaching and learning processes across the globe. In recent decades, higher education institutions have increasingly adopted technology-driven instructional approaches to enhance students’ learning experiences, improve access to education, and promote academic success. One such approach that has gained widespread recognition is blended learning, which combines traditional face-to-face classroom instruction with online and digital learning components (Garrison & Kanuka, 2004).
Blended learning models integrate the strengths of conventional teaching methods—such as direct interaction, immediate feedback, and classroom engagement—with the flexibility, accessibility, and learner-centered nature of online learning platforms. Studies have shown that blended learning can foster deeper understanding, improve learner autonomy, and accommodate diverse learning styles when effectively implemented (Graham, 2013). As a result, many tertiary institutions globally and in developing countries have adopted blended learning as a strategic response to challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, limited instructional time, and the growing demand for flexible learning opportunities.
In Nigeria, the adoption of blended learning in tertiary institutions has been accelerated by factors such as increased internet penetration, government policies on ICT integration in education, and the experiences gained during the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced institutions to rely heavily on online learning platforms (Federal Ministry of Education, 2020). Colleges of education, polytechnics, and universities are increasingly incorporating learning management systems (LMS), virtual classrooms, recorded lectures, and online assessments into their instructional practices. Despite these efforts, the effectiveness of blended learning varies significantly across institutions due to differences in infrastructure, staff capacity, students’ digital literacy, and institutional support.
Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), as Nigeria’s premier polytechnic, plays a critical role in providing technical and vocational education. The institution offers tertiary foundation courses designed to prepare students academically and intellectually for higher-level diploma and degree programmes. These foundation courses are particularly important because they serve as the academic bedrock upon which students’ future performance is built. Consequently, the teaching strategies adopted at this level have far-reaching implications for students’ academic success and retention.
In recent years, YABATECH has introduced elements of blended learning in its foundation programmes, including the use of e-learning portals, online lecture materials, virtual discussions, and computer-based assessments. While these initiatives are intended to enhance instructional delivery and improve academic outcomes, there is limited empirical evidence assessing whether blended learning has significantly improved students’ academic performance in tertiary foundation courses. Given the strategic importance of these courses, it is essential to evaluate the effectiveness of blended learning models in this context to inform policy, practice, and future investments in educational technology.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing adoption of blended learning in Nigerian tertiary institutions, concerns remain regarding its actual impact on students’ academic performance, particularly at the foundation level. At Yaba College of Technology, many students enrolled in tertiary foundation courses continue to experience academic difficulties such as poor grades, low engagement, inadequate study habits, and limited conceptual understanding of core subjects. These challenges raise questions about the effectiveness of current instructional approaches, including blended learning models.
Although blended learning is often promoted as a solution to traditional teaching limitations, its success depends on several factors, including effective course design, availability of technological infrastructure, lecturers’ competence in digital pedagogy, and students’ readiness for self-directed learning. Inadequate internet access, inconsistent power supply, limited digital skills among students, and insufficient training for lecturers may undermine the potential benefits of blended learning at YABATECH.
Furthermore, there is a lack of institution-specific empirical studies that critically examine how blended learning influences academic performance in tertiary foundation courses. Most existing studies focus on universities or general undergraduate programmes, leaving a gap in research on foundation programmes within polytechnics. Without concrete evidence, it is difficult for administrators and educators at YABATECH to determine whether blended learning models are achieving their intended objectives or require modification.
The problem, therefore, is the uncertainty surrounding the effectiveness of blended learning models on students’ academic performance in tertiary foundation courses at Yaba College of Technology. This study seeks to address this gap by systematically evaluating the impact of blended learning on students’ academic outcomes, thereby providing empirical evidence to guide instructional decision-making and policy formulation.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of blended learning models on students’ academic performance in tertiary foundation courses at Yaba College of Technology.
The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following hypothesis is formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: Blended learning models have no significant effect on students’ academic performance in tertiary foundation courses at Yaba College of Technology.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to students, lecturers, institutional administrators, and educational policymakers. Students will gain insight into how blended learning can enhance their academic performance and learning experiences. Lecturers will benefit from evidence-based recommendations on effective instructional strategies for foundation courses. Administrators at Yaba College of Technology will be better informed when making decisions regarding investment in e-learning infrastructure and staff development. Additionally, policymakers and curriculum planners may use the findings to strengthen ICT integration policies in Nigerian tertiary education.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study is limited to tertiary foundation students of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State. It focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of blended learning models on students’ academic performance within selected foundation courses.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Blended Learning: An instructional approach that combines face-to-face classroom teaching with online or digital learning activities.
Academic Performance: The measurable outcomes of students’ learning, often assessed through tests, examinations, and grades.
Tertiary Foundation Courses: Preparatory academic programmes designed to equip students with the foundational knowledge required for higher-level tertiary education.
