INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
In recent years, the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in education has transformed the teaching and learning processes globally. Among the various technological tools available to educators, interactive whiteboards (IWBs) have emerged as an effective medium for enhancing instructional delivery, particularly in science subjects that often involve abstract concepts and complex processes (Beauchamp, 2018). Interactive whiteboards combine traditional teaching methods with multimedia content, enabling teachers to present lessons dynamically, incorporate simulations, and facilitate interactive discussions that can improve students’ comprehension and engagement (Liu et al., 2020).
Science education at the secondary school level requires innovative approaches to stimulate students’ curiosity and improve understanding of topics such as biology, chemistry, and physics. Traditional teaching methods, which rely heavily on lectures and textbook explanations, have often been criticized for being teacher-centered and failing to engage learners actively (Obodo, 2019). The use of interactive whiteboards offers a practical solution by allowing teachers to integrate animations, videos, diagrams, and interactive quizzes, which can cater to diverse learning styles and enhance students’ conceptual understanding (Marriott & Torres, 2021).
Globally, studies have shown that the adoption of IWBs in classrooms leads to improved academic performance, higher levels of student engagement, and better retention of knowledge. For example, Higgins et al. (2019) reported that students in classrooms equipped with IWBs scored significantly higher in science assessments compared to those in traditional classrooms. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the introduction of ICT tools like IWBs has demonstrated potential in bridging learning gaps, improving teacher-student interactions, and facilitating collaborative learning (Afolabi et al., 2021).
In Nigeria, the adoption of ICT in secondary education is gradually increasing, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas such as Jos North Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State. Despite this progress, many secondary schools still rely on conventional teaching methods due to limited access to ICT infrastructure, inadequate teacher training, and inconsistent electricity supply (Agwu & Nwankwo, 2020). Consequently, students’ performance in science subjects remains below national expectations, and educators face challenges in delivering content effectively and engaging students meaningfully (Federal Ministry of Education [FME], 2021).
Interactive whiteboards, when properly implemented, have the potential to transform science teaching in Jos North LGA by creating a more interactive and student-centered learning environment. However, there is limited empirical research in Plateau State examining the extent to which IWBs are used in science classrooms, how they impact student learning, and what factors influence their effectiveness. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for policymakers, school administrators, and educators aiming to improve science education outcomes in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Science education is fundamental for national development, as it equips students with critical thinking skills and prepares them for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Yet, in Jos North LGA, secondary school students often struggle with science subjects, reflected in low examination scores, high failure rates, and limited interest in science-related careers (National Examinations Council [NECO], 2022).
One of the main challenges is the reliance on traditional lecture-based teaching methods, which tend to be teacher-centered and do not adequately engage students (Obodo, 2019). Although interactive whiteboards offer an innovative solution to enhance teaching and learning by promoting interactivity, visualization, and student participation, their adoption remains inconsistent. Many schools lack the necessary infrastructure, while others have IWBs but do not utilize them effectively due to insufficient teacher training or limited awareness of their pedagogical potential (Agwu & Nwankwo, 2020).
Moreover, there is a lack of empirical evidence in Jos North LGA regarding the impact of IWBs on students’ performance in science subjects. Questions remain about whether the use of IWBs improves understanding of scientific concepts, enhances academic achievement, and fosters positive learning attitudes. Addressing these gaps is critical to ensuring that ICT tools like IWBs are deployed strategically to enhance science education outcomes in Plateau State and beyond.
1.3 Research Questions
This study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1.4 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following hypothesis at a 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between the use of interactive whiteboards and the academic performance of secondary school students in science subjects in Jos North LGA, Plateau State.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between the use of interactive whiteboards and the academic performance of secondary school students in science subjects in Jos North LGA, Plateau State.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The study is significant as it will provide empirical evidence on the impact of interactive whiteboards on teaching and learning science subjects in secondary schools. The findings will benefit teachers by informing strategies for integrating IWBs effectively into classroom instruction. School administrators and policymakers will gain insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with ICT adoption in education. Furthermore, students will benefit from improved learning experiences, and the study will contribute to the broader discourse on the use of technology to enhance educational outcomes in developing countries.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on secondary schools in Jos North LGA, Plateau State. It examines the use of interactive whiteboards specifically in teaching science subjects, including physics, chemistry, and biology. The study does not cover other ICT tools, primary or tertiary education, or non-science subjects.
