INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Eggs are a staple food consumed globally due to their affordability, availability, and high nutritional value. They are considered a rich source of high-quality protein, essential amino acids, vitamins (such as B12, D, and A), and vital minerals like iron, phosphorus, and selenium. These nutrients make eggs a key component of many diets and an important food source, especially in developing countries like Nigeria, where protein deficiency is prevalent. However, the growing concerns over food safety have led to increasing scrutiny of the quality of eggs, particularly regarding contamination from chemical residues, including antibiotics.
Antibiotics are widely used in poultry farming for various reasons, including treating infections (therapeutic use), preventing the outbreak of diseases (prophylactic use), and promoting faster growth rates in birds (growth-promoting use). While these practices have significantly improved poultry health and production efficiency, they have also introduced potential health risks due to improper handling and misuse. In many cases, farmers fail to observe the mandatory withdrawal period — the time required between the last administration of an antibiotic and when animal products can be safely consumed. When this period is not observed, residues of these drugs may remain in animal products, including eggs, entering the human food chain (Okeke et al., 2018).
The ingestion of antibiotic-contaminated eggs poses serious health risks to consumers. Despite this growing body of evidence, there is still a dearth of data specifically concerning markets in semi-urban areas like Keffi in Nasarawa State.
Keffi Local Government Area is recognized for its dynamic poultry farming sector, and the Keffi Market serves as a key commercial center for the sale of poultry products, including eggs. The increasing demand for eggs in the area, driven by population growth and changing dietary habits, has led to intensified poultry production. However, there is no routine surveillance or published research data evaluating the safety of eggs sold in the market with regard to antibiotic contamination. This lack of data limits the ability of health authorities to assess the risks and implement appropriate control measures.
Therefore, this study seeks to bridge the knowledge gap by evaluating the presence and concentration of antibiotic residues in egg samples obtained from Keffi Market. It aims to determine whether the detected levels comply with international maximum residue limits (MRLs) and to assess the potential implications for public health. By doing so, the study will provide crucial evidence that can inform policy decisions, guide food safety interventions, and raise public awareness on the importance of prudent antibiotic use in poultry farming.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The extensive and often unregulated use of antibiotics in poultry farming has become a pressing public health concern globally, and Nigeria is no exception. Poultry farmers frequently administer antibiotics to birds not only for treatment but also for preventive and growth-promoting purposes. However, a major issue arises when these antibiotics are used without observing the recommended withdrawal periods — the time required for the drug to be metabolized and excreted from the animal’s system before the animal or its products are consumed. Failure to adhere to this period results in the persistence of antibiotic residues in poultry products, including eggs, which may then be ingested by unsuspecting consumers.
In many parts of Nigeria, including Keffi Market in Nasarawa State, there is an apparent lack of effective regulatory monitoring and routine testing for antibiotic residues in animal-derived food products. Despite the significance of these findings, there is currently no published data assessing the levels of antibiotic residues in eggs sold in Keffi Market, leaving a critical gap in food safety knowledge and public health protection.
The risk is further exacerbated by the increasing demand for eggs in Keffi and its environs, driven by population growth, urbanization, and changing consumption patterns. By determining whether these levels exceed established safety thresholds, the study aims to provide evidence-based insights into the safety of eggs consumed in the area and inform necessary interventions by public health authorities. Without such data, efforts to protect consumer health and promote responsible antibiotic use in poultry farming will remain hindered.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The general objective of this study is to evaluate the presence and levels of antibiotic residues in egg samples obtained from Keffi Market, Nasarawa State.
The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: There is no significant difference between the antibiotic residue levels detected in egg samples from Keffi Market and the maximum residue limits (MRLs) established by international food safety standards.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study holds considerable significance as it provides the first comprehensive baseline data on antibiotic residues in eggs sold at Keffi Market in Nasarawa State. 1.7 Scope of the Study
The study is limited to the evaluation of antibiotic residues in table eggs sold in Keffi Market. The analysis will focus on commonly used antibiotics in poultry, such as tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and fluoroquinolones. The study will not cover residues of hormones, pesticides, or other veterinary drugs. Geographic scope is restricted to Keffi Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, Nigeria.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
Limitations of the study include the following:

1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

In this study, antibiotic residues refer specifically to the remnants of veterinary antibiotics that may be detected in eggs sold in Keffi Market due to non-compliance with withdrawal periods.
Withdrawal Period: This refers to the minimum amount of time that must elapse between the last administration of a veterinary drug and the time when animal products (e.g., eggs) can be safely consumed. In this study, it denotes the period that should be observed by poultry farmers before selling eggs from medicated birds to ensure residue levels are safe.
Egg Samples: In this context, egg samples refer to the eggs collected from different vendors at Keffi Market in Keffi Local Government Area. These samples are subjected to laboratory analysis to detect the presence and levels of antibiotic residues.
Keffi Market: A major commercial marketplace located in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. For the purpose of this research, it is the selected site where egg samples are sourced for analysis.
Maximum Residue Limit (MRL): MRLs are the highest levels of antibiotic residues legally permitted in food products, as set by regulatory agencies such as the Codex Alimentarius Commission or the World Health Organization (WHO). In this study, they serve as the benchmark for assessing whether the detected residues in eggs are within safe consumption limits.
Public Health Risk: This refers to the potential adverse effects on human health resulting from the consumption of contaminated eggs. In this study, it includes allergic reactions, antimicrobial resistance, and other health concerns associated with the ingestion of antibiotic residues.
Antibiotic Resistance: A condition where bacteria develop the ability to survive exposure to antibiotics that would normally kill them. In the context of this study, it is considered a long-term public health consequence of consuming food products containing low-level antibiotic residues over time.
