CHAPTER ONE:

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education plays a vital role in the development of any nation, as it equips individuals with knowledge, skills, and values necessary for social and economic growth. For effective teaching and learning to occur, a stable and consistent academic calendar is essential. However, in recent years, the academic calendar in many secondary schools has been disrupted by frequent holidays — both official and unofficial — resulting from public events, political activities, religious observances, and unforeseen circumstances such as strikes or pandemics (Oladipo & Akinola, 2021).

Frequent school holidays, whether planned or unplanned, can interfere with the teaching-learning process by reducing instructional time and affecting curriculum coverage. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO, 2020), sufficient contact hours between teachers and students are critical for achieving desired learning outcomes. When these contact hours are frequently interrupted, it can lead to knowledge gaps, poor retention, and ultimately, lower academic performance among students.

In Nigeria (or specify your country), the pattern of frequent holidays has become more pronounced due to socio-political factors, national celebrations, religious festivities, and industrial actions by teachers’ unions. For instance, the academic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns highlighted how long breaks can negatively affect students’ learning continuity (Adebayo & Ojo, 2021). Similarly, unplanned holidays due to elections, security concerns, or community events often force schools to suspend academic activities abruptly, thereby affecting students’ readiness for examinations.

Educational researchers have noted that students tend to lose a portion of their previously learned material during long or frequent breaks, a phenomenon often described as the “learning loss” effect (Cooper et al., 2019). Moreover, when academic activities resume after such breaks, both teachers and students struggle to regain momentum, leading to rushed lessons and incomplete syllabi (Afolabi, 2020). This cumulative effect can have a negative influence on students’ academic performance and overall educational outcomes.

Given these concerns, it becomes imperative to evaluate the effect of frequent holidays on students’ academic performance in secondary schools. This study therefore seeks to determine the extent to which frequent holidays impact learning outcomes, students’ preparedness, and academic achievement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Over the years, frequent holidays have become a recurring issue affecting the smooth operation of the school calendar. Many secondary schools experience frequent interruptions that hinder syllabus completion and effective teaching. As a result, students often find themselves unprepared for internal and external examinations, leading to poor academic results.

Despite the government’s efforts to ensure a consistent academic calendar, the reality in most schools reflects otherwise. Teachers struggle to meet up with the curriculum after extended breaks, while students lose study motivation and continuity. Parents and educators have expressed concern that the increasing number of holidays could be contributing to a decline in academic performance and overall educational quality (Olawale, 2022).

The problem, therefore, is to determine how frequent holidays affect students’ academic performance in secondary schools. Specifically, this study will evaluate whether there is a significant relationship between the frequency of holidays and students’ academic outcomes.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of frequent holidays on the academic performance of students in secondary schools. The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the types and causes of frequent holidays in secondary schools.

2. Examine the extent to which frequent holidays affect students’ learning continuity.

3. Determine the relationship between frequent holidays and students’ academic performance.

4. Suggest strategies to minimize the negative effects of frequent holidays on learning outcomes.

1.4 Research Questions

This study will be guided by the following research questions:

1. What are the major types and causes of frequent holidays in secondary schools?

2. How do frequent holidays affect students’ learning continuity and study habits?

3. What is the relationship between frequent holidays and students’ academic performance?

4. What strategies can be implemented to reduce the negative impact of frequent holidays on academic achievement?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

To guide the study, the following hypothesis is formulated:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between frequent holidays and students’ academic performance in secondary schools.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between frequent holidays and students’ academic performance in secondary schools.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be valuable to multiple stakeholders:

• Students will become more aware of how frequent holidays affect their learning progress and the need to maintain self-discipline during such periods.

• Teachers will gain insight into how to plan lessons and recovery schedules effectively after prolonged holidays.

• School administrators and policymakers will understand the need for a more stable and flexible academic calendar that minimizes disruptions.

• Parents and guardians will be better informed about their roles in supporting students’ learning continuity during extended breaks.

• Researchers will benefit from the study as it adds to the existing literature on educational planning, school management, and student performance.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study will focus on selected secondary schools within Ibadan North Local Government Area, Oyo State. It will examine the types and frequency of holidays experienced, how students spend their time during holidays, and the relationship between these factors and their academic performance. The study will include both male and female students across junior and senior secondary school levels.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Frequent Holidays: Repeated interruptions in the school calendar, including official public holidays, strikes, or unplanned closures.

• Academic Performance: The measurable learning outcomes of students, often represented by test scores, grades, or examination results.

• Learning Continuity: The consistent engagement of students in learning activities without major interruptions.

• Secondary School Students: Learners enrolled in post-primary education, typically aged between 12 and 18 years.

• School Calendar: The official timetable that outlines academic activities, holidays, and examination periods for a given academic year.
