CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Punctuality in education is a critical factor that influences pupils’ academic performance and overall discipline (Adeyemi, 2010). Lateness to school, defined as the habitual failure of pupils to arrive at school at the designated starting time, has been widely recognized as a challenge in primary education (Oladipo, 2015). Regular attendance and timely arrival in school are essential for ensuring that pupils fully benefit from instructional time, participate in learning activities, and develop positive study habits (Okafor, 2018).

In primary schools, the early hours of the day are often devoted to teaching foundational skills such as reading, writing, and numeracy. Pupils who arrive late may miss important instructions, experience difficulty in catching up, and develop a negative attitude toward learning (Afolabi, 2013). Repeated lateness can also disrupt the teaching and learning process for other pupils, affecting classroom management and reducing overall academic performance (Emmanuel & Abimbola, 2016).

Several factors contribute to pupils’ lateness, including parental negligence, long distances from home to school, poor time management, and socio-economic challenges (Ogunleye, 2017). In urban areas like Ikorodu, Lagos, traffic congestion and commuting challenges may exacerbate lateness among pupils, further impacting learning outcomes (Akinyemi, 2019). Despite the apparent significance of punctuality, there is limited empirical evidence in Nigeria on how lateness specifically affects pupils’ academic performance in primary schools. Understanding this relationship is crucial for educators, parents, and policymakers in order to implement strategies that enhance learning outcomes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Academic performance in primary schools is a major concern for educators, parents, and the government. Lateness to school has been identified as a potential barrier to effective learning, yet many pupils continue to arrive late daily (Oladipo, 2015). Late arrivals may lead to missed lessons, incomplete understanding of subject matter, and low participation in classroom activities, which can cumulatively affect performance in examinations.

In Ikorodu, Lagos, primary schools face challenges such as overcrowded classrooms and long commuting distances, which contribute to lateness among pupils (Akinyemi, 2019). While some schools have policies to monitor punctuality, the enforcement is often inconsistent. Consequently, pupils who are frequently late may experience academic setbacks, while teachers’ instructional plans are disrupted. This study seeks to evaluate how lateness to school impacts pupils’ academic performance in five selected primary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of lateness to school on pupils’ academic performance. The specific objectives are:

1. To determine the relationship between pupils’ lateness and their academic performance.

2. To examine the frequency of lateness among pupils in the selected primary schools.

3. To identify the factors contributing to pupils’ lateness.

4. To assess teachers’ strategies in managing pupils’ lateness and its effect on learning.

5. To provide recommendations to improve punctuality and academic outcomes among primary school pupils.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What is the relationship between pupils’ lateness and their academic performance?

2. How frequent is lateness among pupils in the selected primary schools?

3. What factors contribute to pupils arriving late to school?

4. What strategies do teachers employ to manage lateness, and how effective are they?

5. What measures can be implemented to reduce lateness and improve academic performance?

1.5 Hypothesis

H₀: Lateness to school has no significant effect on pupils’ academic performance in the selected primary schools.
H₁: Lateness to school has a significant effect on pupils’ academic performance in the selected primary schools.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several stakeholders:

• Pupils: The findings will help pupils understand the importance of punctuality and its effect on learning outcomes.

• Teachers: The study will assist teachers in identifying strategies to reduce lateness and improve instructional delivery.

• Parents: The results will guide parents in monitoring and supporting their children’s punctuality for better academic performance.

• Educational Policy Makers: The study will provide evidence to inform policies on school attendance, punctuality, and academic interventions in primary education.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study will focus on five selected primary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos. It will examine the frequency, causes, and effects of lateness on pupils’ academic performance in core subjects such as English, Mathematics, and Science. The research will involve pupils, teachers, and school records to ensure a comprehensive assessment.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Lateness: Arriving at school after the officially designated start time.

• Academic Performance: The measurable outcomes of pupils’ learning, usually assessed through tests, assignments, and examinations.

• Pupils: Children enrolled in primary education, typically aged 6–12 years.

• Primary Schools: Educational institutions providing the first stage of formal education in Nigeria.
