Project – Evaluation of Recreational Activities and Students’ Mental Health in Selected Secondary Schools in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Mental health is an essential component of human well-being and plays a significant role in the emotional, psychological, social, and academic development of individuals. The World Health Organization defines mental health as a state of well-being in which individuals realize their abilities, cope with normal life stresses, work productively, and contribute positively to society. Among adolescents, mental health is particularly important because this stage of life is characterized by rapid physical, emotional, social, and psychological changes that may influence behavior, relationships, and academic performance. Secondary school students often face challenges such as academic pressure, peer influence, family problems, social expectations, emotional instability, and identity struggles, all of which may affect their mental health.
In recent years, there has been increasing global concern regarding the mental health of adolescents. Mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, stress, loneliness, low self-esteem, emotional instability, and behavioral disorders have become common among secondary school students. According to the World Health Organization (2021), mental health conditions account for a significant proportion of illness and disability among adolescents worldwide. Poor mental health among students can negatively affect academic achievement, social interaction, emotional stability, and overall quality of life. In severe cases, mental health problems may lead to substance abuse, violence, self-harm, school dropout, or suicidal behavior.
In Nigeria, mental health challenges among adolescents have become increasingly visible due to economic hardship, insecurity, family instability, unemployment, academic competition, and social pressure. Secondary school students are exposed to numerous stressors that may weaken their emotional and psychological well-being. Many students struggle with examination anxiety, bullying, peer pressure, family conflicts, social media influence, and uncertainty about the future. Despite the growing prevalence of mental health issues among adolescents, awareness and support services remain inadequate in many schools and communities.
Recreational activities have been recognized as important tools for promoting physical, emotional, social, and psychological well-being among young people. Recreation refers to activities that individuals engage in during their leisure time for relaxation, enjoyment, exercise, entertainment, and social interaction. Recreational activities may include sports, games, dancing, music, drama, cultural activities, physical exercise, excursions, and other leisure-based programs. Participation in recreational activities is believed to contribute positively to mental health by reducing stress, improving mood, increasing self-confidence, encouraging social interaction, and promoting emotional stability.
In educational settings, recreational activities form an important aspect of students’ holistic development. Schools organize sporting events, cultural programs, debates, clubs, and social activities to promote students’ physical fitness, teamwork, leadership skills, creativity, and emotional well-being. Recreational activities provide students with opportunities to relax from academic stress, build friendships, and develop healthy coping mechanisms. According to Iso-Ahola (1999), participation in recreation contributes significantly to psychological well-being by reducing anxiety and improving life satisfaction. Similarly, Coleman and Iso-Ahola (1993) observed that leisure and recreational activities help individuals cope with stress and maintain emotional balance.
Adolescents who participate actively in recreational activities are more likely to experience positive mental health outcomes than those who remain socially isolated or physically inactive. Physical recreational activities such as football, athletics, volleyball, basketball, and dancing help improve physical fitness and stimulate the release of hormones associated with happiness and relaxation. Social recreational activities also encourage interaction, communication, cooperation, and emotional support among peers. Consequently, recreation is increasingly recognized as an important strategy for promoting students’ mental health and preventing emotional disorders among adolescents.
In Nigeria, however, many secondary schools face challenges in providing adequate recreational facilities and programs for students. Some schools lack sports equipment, playgrounds, trained instructors, recreational centers, and organized leisure activities necessary for students’ physical and emotional development. In some cases, schools focus primarily on academic performance while giving little attention to recreation and mental well-being. As a result, many students experience stress, boredom, emotional tension, and social isolation without adequate opportunities for relaxation and psychological support.
Jos North Local Government Area in Plateau State is one of the major urban areas in northern Nigeria with numerous public and private secondary schools. Students in the area are exposed to different environmental, academic, and social challenges that may affect their mental health. Issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, communal conflicts, peer pressure, and academic stress may contribute to anxiety, emotional instability, and psychological distress among students. Recreational activities therefore become important in helping students cope with these challenges and maintain emotional balance.
Despite the recognized importance of recreation in promoting well-being, many secondary school students in Jos North may not participate actively in recreational activities due to lack of facilities, inadequate school support, poor time management, academic pressure, or limited awareness of the benefits of recreation. Some students spend most of their time on academic activities and social media engagement without adequate participation in physical or social recreational programs. This situation may contribute to increased stress, depression, loneliness, and poor mental health among students.
Furthermore, school administrators, teachers, and parents may underestimate the importance of recreational activities in students’ emotional and psychological development. In some schools, recreation is viewed merely as entertainment rather than an important component of mental health promotion. Consequently, insufficient attention may be given to organizing recreational programs that support students’ well-being.
Scholars have emphasized the relationship between recreation and mental health. Caldwell (2005) noted that leisure and recreational participation contribute significantly to adolescent mental health and emotional adjustment. Similarly, Akinpelu (2018) observed that students who participate actively in recreational activities demonstrate lower levels of stress and higher levels of emotional stability. However, limited studies have specifically examined recreational activities and students’ mental health in secondary schools within Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Therefore, this study seeks to evaluate recreational activities and students’ mental health in selected secondary schools in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State. The study intends to determine whether participation in recreational activities significantly influences students’ mental health and emotional well-being. The findings of the study are expected to contribute to educational development, school health programs, and adolescent mental health promotion in Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Mental health problems among secondary school students have become a growing concern in many parts of Nigeria. Adolescents face numerous emotional, social, academic, and environmental challenges that may negatively affect their psychological well-being. Many students experience stress, anxiety, depression, loneliness, low self-esteem, emotional instability, and behavioral problems resulting from academic pressure, peer influence, family conflicts, insecurity, and societal expectations. Poor mental health among students may lead to poor academic performance, indiscipline, substance abuse, violence, social withdrawal, and other negative outcomes.
Recreational activities are expected to promote students’ mental health by providing opportunities for relaxation, physical exercise, emotional expression, social interaction, and stress reduction. Through participation in sports, games, clubs, cultural activities, and other leisure programs, students are expected to develop emotional stability, positive self-esteem, and healthy social relationships. Schools are therefore expected to provide adequate recreational facilities and opportunities that support students’ physical and psychological well-being.
Despite the recognized importance of recreation, many secondary schools in Jos North Local Government Area appear to give inadequate attention to recreational activities. Some schools lack recreational facilities such as playgrounds, sports equipment, and organized leisure programs necessary for students’ development. In some cases, school authorities focus more on academic achievement while neglecting students’ emotional and psychological well-being. As a result, many students experience excessive stress and emotional difficulties without adequate opportunities for relaxation and social engagement.
Another problem is that many students do not actively participate in recreational activities due to academic workload, lack of interest, peer influence, poor school support, or excessive involvement in social media and electronic devices. This lack of participation may contribute to increased mental health problems among students. Furthermore, parents and teachers may not fully understand the importance of recreation in promoting mental health and emotional balance among adolescents.
In Jos North, factors such as insecurity, economic hardship, social tension, and academic competition may further increase psychological stress among students. Without adequate recreational opportunities, students may find it difficult to cope effectively with emotional challenges and stress-related problems. This situation raises concerns regarding whether recreational activities significantly contribute to students’ mental health and emotional well-being.
Although previous studies have examined adolescent mental health and physical activities, few studies have specifically focused on the evaluation of recreational activities and students’ mental health in selected secondary schools in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State. This creates a gap in knowledge that this study seeks to fill. Therefore, the problem of this study is to determine whether recreational activities significantly influence students’ mental health in selected secondary schools in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State.
