1.1 Background of the Study

The combustion of fossil fuels is the primary source of carbon dioxide emissions responsible for global climate change.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emphasizes that transitioning to low-carbon energy systems is critical to limiting global warming and achieving sustainable development goals. Renewable energy sources—including solar, wind, hydro, and biomass—offer cleaner alternatives that reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and enhance energy security. In Kaduna State, frequent power outages disrupt economic activities, hinder industrial productivity, and reduce the quality of life for residents. Many households and businesses rely on diesel and petrol generators, which emit pollutants that degrade air quality and contribute to climate change.
Although renewable energy technologies such as solar power present viable alternatives, their adoption in Kaduna State remains limited and unevenly distributed. Rural communities, which could benefit significantly from decentralized renewable systems, often lack the financial resources and technical capacity to implement such technologies. Urban areas may have greater access to renewable solutions, but adoption rates remain insufficient to significantly reduce fossil fuel dependence.
