INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Solid waste management has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing developing nations today. As population growth, urbanization, and industrialization accelerate, the volume and complexity of waste generated have increased dramatically (Guerrero, Maas, & Hogland, 2013). Solid waste refers to discarded materials arising from human and animal activities that are no longer useful or required and must be disposed of (Afon, 2012). Effective management of solid waste involves its generation, collection, storage, transportation, treatment, recycling, and final disposal in an environmentally sound manner (Mbah & Nzeadibe, 2017).
In Nigeria, poor solid waste management (SWM) practices have created significant environmental and public health concerns. The lack of adequate collection systems, poor infrastructure, weak policy implementation, and insufficient funding have resulted in the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in open spaces, gutters, and water channels (Adewole, 2009). This leads to blocked drainage systems, flooding, pollution of surface and groundwater, and the spread of diseases such as cholera, malaria, and typhoid fever (Ogunrinola & Adepegba, 2012).
Jigawa State, located in northwestern Nigeria, is not exempt from these challenges. The state’s rapid urban expansion, especially in towns such as Dutse, Hadejia, and Kazaure, has intensified waste generation without a corresponding improvement in waste management infrastructure (Yahaya & Abubakar, 2020). Most waste generated in Jigawa consists of domestic refuse, agricultural residues, plastics, and other non-biodegradable materials (Abdullahi, 2021). However, waste collection services are often irregular and limited to urban centers, leaving peri-urban and rural areas with little to no waste disposal options.
Furthermore, the absence of proper waste segregation, recycling, and composting systems contributes to environmental degradation. Open burning of waste releases greenhouse gases and particulate matter into the atmosphere, exacerbating air pollution and contributing to climate change (Ali, 2020). Similarly, leachate from open dumpsites contaminates soil and water bodies, reducing agricultural productivity and threatening community health (Mbah & Nzeadibe, 2017). These issues highlight the need to evaluate existing solid waste management practices in Jigawa State and assess their environmental implications.
Globally, effective waste management has been recognized as an integral part of achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 13 (Climate Action) (United Nations, 2015). Developing countries are, therefore, urged to transition from traditional waste disposal methods toward integrated and sustainable solid waste management systems. Evaluating current waste practices in Jigawa will provide valuable insights for policy reform and sustainable environmental management.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Jigawa State, improper solid waste management has become a critical environmental and health issue. Despite efforts by local authorities to collect and dispose of waste, the system remains inefficient and unsustainable. Most waste is dumped in open spaces or roadside heaps, while designated dumpsites are poorly managed (Yahaya & Abubakar, 2020). These practices have led to environmental problems such as blocked drainage systems, flooding, offensive odors, soil degradation, and contamination of water sources.
Additionally, public awareness about proper waste disposal is low, and community participation in waste management initiatives is minimal (Abdullahi, 2021). The lack of modern waste treatment facilities, inadequate funding, and poor enforcement of environmental regulations exacerbate the problem (Afon, 2012). Consequently, waste accumulation in Jigawa’s major towns continues to threaten public health, degrade environmental quality, and undermine the aesthetic value of urban spaces.
Given these challenges, it is necessary to evaluate existing solid waste management practices in Jigawa State to determine their effectiveness and environmental implications. Such evaluation will guide policymakers, local authorities, and stakeholders toward the adoption of sustainable waste management strategies.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to evaluate solid waste management practices and their environmental implications in Jigawa State.
The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following hypothesis will guide the study:
H₀: Solid waste management practices have no significant effect on the environment in Jigawa State.
H₁: Solid waste management practices have a significant effect on the environment in Jigawa State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it contributes to understanding the current state of solid waste management in Jigawa State, highlighting weaknesses and areas for improvement. Secondly, the findings will assist government agencies and local councils in developing effective policies, waste management frameworks, and community-based initiatives for sustainable environmental management. Thirdly, the study will help environmental health officers and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) design educational programs aimed at promoting responsible waste disposal behaviors among residents. Finally, the research adds to the academic body of knowledge on environmental management and sustainable urban development in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on evaluating solid waste management practices and their environmental implications in selected urban and peri-urban areas of Jigawa State, including Dutse, Hadejia, and Kazaure. It will assess waste collection, storage, transportation, and disposal methods, as well as their effects on air, water, and soil quality. The study period covers 2015–2025, corresponding to the period of major infrastructural and population growth in the state.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
