Project – Factors influencing adherence to standard precautions among health workers
Chapter One:
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
The adherence to standard precautions among health workers has been a topic of interest in many studies. According to a study by Gammon, Morgan-Samuel, and Gould (2008), the level of adherence to standard precautions among health workers is influenced by several factors, including knowledge, attitudes, and perceived risk. The study found that health workers who had a higher level of knowledge about standard precautions were more likely to adhere to them.
Similarly, a study by Kermode et al. (2005) found that health workers’ attitudes towards standard precautions significantly influenced their adherence. Health workers who perceived standard precautions as necessary and beneficial were more likely to adhere to them. This study also highlighted the importance of continuous education and training for health workers to improve their attitudes and adherence to standard precautions.
However, a study by Chan, Ho, and Lo (1999) found that perceived risk was a significant factor influencing adherence to standard precautions. Health workers who perceived a higher risk of infection were more likely to adhere to standard precautions. This suggests that health workers’ perception of risk may be influenced by their level of knowledge and attitudes towards standard precautions.
A study by Gershon et al. (2000) also found that organizational factors, such as the availability of protective equipment and the support from management, significantly influenced health workers’ adherence to standard precautions. Health workers were more likely to adhere to standard precautions when they had access to protective equipment and when they felt supported by their management.
In conclusion, the literature suggests that adherence to standard precautions among health workers is influenced by a complex interplay of individual and organizational factors. Therefore, interventions aimed at improving adherence to standard precautions should consider these factors.
