INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Feminist literary criticism has provided a critical framework for examining women’s experiences, social roles, and gender dynamics in literature. In African literature, particularly Nigerian women’s writing, feminist perspectives are instrumental in uncovering the nuanced struggles of women within patriarchal societies and postcolonial contexts. Nigerian women writers have historically used literature as a means of resistance, asserting women’s agency, challenging gender norms, and redefining identity in both domestic and public spheres (Nfah-Abbenyi, 1997; Ojaide, 2000).

Buchi Emecheta, one of Nigeria’s most prominent women writers, interrogates the intersection of gender, tradition, and colonial legacies in her works. In The Joys of Motherhood (1979), Emecheta explores the lives of Nigerian women navigating societal expectations, motherhood, and personal aspirations within a patriarchal and socioeconomically constrained environment. The novel traces the experiences of Nnu Ego, whose life epitomizes the tensions between traditional gender roles and the evolving realities of women in urban Nigeria (Emecheta, 1979).

The feminist lens in The Joys of Motherhood highlights issues such as female subordination, the commodification of women’s reproductive labor, and the struggle for self-determination. While The Joys of Motherhood has received scholarly attention for its portrayal of motherhood and gender roles, few studies have systematically examined how Emecheta employs feminist frameworks to critique patriarchal norms and illuminate women’s resistance within traditional and urban settings.

Furthermore, the complexities of motherhood, societal expectations, and personal autonomy often intersect in ways that are inadequately explored in literary scholarship. The absence of detailed feminist analyses limits the broader understanding of how literature functions as a tool for social critique and empowerment in postcolonial Nigeria.

This study, therefore, seeks to fill this gap by examining the feminist perspectives embedded in The Joys of Motherhood, with particular focus on how the narrative portrays women’s struggles, agency, and resistance within the socio-cultural and historical contexts of Nigeria.

1.3 Research Objectives

The primary objective of this study is to explore feminist perspectives in Nigerian women’s literature through a case study of Buchi Emecheta’s The Joys of Motherhood. Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Analyze the representation of gender roles and women’s experiences in the novel.

2. Examine the ways in which Emecheta critiques patriarchal structures through her narrative.

3. Explore the strategies of resistance and agency employed by female characters in the novel.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses exclusively on Buchi Emecheta’s The Joys of Motherhood, analyzing its narrative representation of gender, feminism, and women’s resistance. While other works by Emecheta or Nigerian women writers may address similar themes, this study confines itself to the depiction of female experiences within the socio-cultural and historical contexts presented in this novel.
