INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Financial accountability is a fundamental principle in both secular and religious organizations, ensuring transparency, integrity, and responsible management of resources. In the Christian context, financial accountability refers to the proper recording, management, and reporting of church funds in a manner that aligns with biblical teachings and ethical standards. The Bible emphasizes stewardship, stating that leaders are entrusted with God’s resources and are expected to manage them faithfully (1 Corinthians 4:2). Therefore, financial accountability in churches is not only an administrative requirement but also a spiritual responsibility.

In Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, financial resources are generated mainly through tithes, offerings, donations, building projects, and special seed contributions. These funds are essential for church administration, evangelism, welfare programs, and infrastructural development. Churches such as the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Christ Embassy have experienced massive growth in membership and financial inflow over the years. This expansion has increased the need for structured financial management systems to ensure accountability and sustainability.

Church administration involves the planning, organizing, controlling, and coordination of church activities and resources to achieve spiritual and organizational goals. According to Stott (2002), effective church administration requires integrity, transparency, and accountability, especially in financial matters. Without proper financial systems, churches may face issues such as mismanagement, distrust among members, and reduced participation in church activities.

The issue of financial accountability has become increasingly important in Nigerian Pentecostal churches due to the rapid growth of congregations and financial contributions. RCCG and Christ Embassy, being among the largest Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, manage large financial resources across branches worldwide. While these churches have established financial systems, concerns still exist regarding transparency, auditing practices, and the level of member involvement in financial decision-making.

Financial accountability is closely linked to trust between church leaders and members. When members perceive that church funds are managed transparently, they are more likely to contribute and remain committed to the church. According to Barna (2015), trust in leadership is strengthened when financial practices are open, ethical, and well-documented. Conversely, lack of transparency can lead to suspicion, reduced giving, and internal conflict.

In Nigeria, religious organizations operate in a socio-economic environment characterized by poverty, unemployment, and financial vulnerability. As a result, churches often become major centers for financial support and social assistance. This places greater responsibility on church leaders to ensure proper financial stewardship. Mismanagement of church funds not only affects church operations but also damages the credibility of the church in society.

Despite the importance of financial accountability, reports of financial opacity, leadership control over church funds, and limited member access to financial information have raised concerns in some Pentecostal churches. Therefore, it becomes necessary to examine how financial accountability influences church administration, particularly in large Pentecostal denominations such as RCCG and Christ Embassy in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, especially RCCG and Christ Embassy, have experienced rapid numerical and financial growth over the past decades. This growth has led to increased financial inflows from tithes, offerings, special donations, and international partnerships. However, despite this financial expansion, concerns have been raised about how these resources are managed and accounted for within church administration.

One major problem is the lack of full financial transparency in some church administrative structures. In many cases, financial decisions are centralized in the hands of senior pastors or top leadership, with limited participation from other church stakeholders. This concentration of financial authority raises concerns about accountability, especially in large congregations where financial transactions are complex and widespread.

Another issue is the perception among some church members that financial reports are not always clearly communicated or made accessible. This creates suspicion and reduces trust in church leadership. When members are uncertain about how church funds are used, their willingness to contribute may decrease, thereby affecting church operations and growth.

Furthermore, the absence of standardized financial auditing systems in some branches of Pentecostal churches has been identified as a challenge. Although some churches claim to have internal control systems, inconsistencies in financial reporting across branches may affect overall accountability. This raises questions about the effectiveness of financial governance structures in church administration.

In addition, there are concerns about the use of church funds for personal or non-church-related purposes in some religious organizations in Nigeria. Such practices, whether perceived or real, undermine the integrity of church leadership and negatively affect public perception of Pentecostal churches.

Despite the prominence of RCCG and Christ Embassy in Nigeria and globally, there is limited empirical research that specifically examines how financial accountability influences their church administration structures. Therefore, the problem of this study is to critically examine the influence of financial accountability on church administration in selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, focusing on RCCG and Christ Embassy.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine financial accountability and its influence on church administration in Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, with specific reference to RCCG and Christ Embassy.

The specific objectives are to:

1. examine the financial accountability practices in RCCG and Christ Embassy;
2. assess the effectiveness of church administration in RCCG and Christ Embassy;
3. determine the relationship between financial accountability and church administration;
4. identify challenges affecting financial accountability in Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What are the financial accountability practices in RCCG and Christ Embassy?
2. How effective is church administration in RCCG and Christ Embassy?
3. What is the relationship between financial accountability and church administration?
4. What challenges affect financial accountability in Pentecostal churches in Nigeria?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between financial accountability and church administration in Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between financial accountability and church administration in Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to church leaders, church administrators, members of RCCG and Christ Embassy, and other Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. It will help church leaders understand the importance of financial transparency and accountability in strengthening trust and improving church administration.

The study will also benefit church members by increasing their awareness of financial governance practices within their churches. For researchers and scholars, the study will contribute to existing literature on financial accountability and church administration in Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.

Furthermore, the findings will assist church policymakers in developing better financial management systems that promote transparency, efficiency, and sustainability in church operations.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on financial accountability and its influence on church administration in selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, specifically RCCG and Christ Embassy. It examines financial management practices, administrative structures, transparency, and challenges affecting accountability. The study is limited to selected branches within Nigeria.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Financial Accountability: The process of ensuring transparency, responsibility, and proper management of church funds.

Church Administration: The organizational and managerial activities involved in running church affairs effectively.

Pentecostal Church: A Christian denomination that emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, and evangelism.

RCCG: Redeemed Christian Church of God, a global Pentecostal church based in Nigeria.

Christ Embassy: A Pentecostal Christian ministry founded in Nigeria with global outreach.
