INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The global financial services industry has experienced significant transformation over the last two decades due to rapid advancements in financial technology (fintech). Fintech refers to the integration of digital technologies into financial services to improve efficiency, accessibility, speed, and customer experience. This transformation has reshaped traditional banking systems, particularly in developing economies like Nigeria, where digital financial services have expanded rapidly due to increased mobile penetration, internet access, and evolving consumer behavior (Adewumi & Ige, 2023).

In Nigeria, Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) such as Access Bank and Zenith Bank have historically played a central role in financial intermediation, savings mobilization, and credit allocation. However, the emergence of fintech firms and digital financial platforms has introduced strong competition in payments, lending, savings, and customer service delivery. Innovations such as mobile banking applications, agency banking, USSD banking, point-of-sale (POS) systems, and digital lending platforms have reduced reliance on physical bank branches while increasing transaction speed and convenience (Ogbobe & Ezeala, 2024).

Empirical evidence shows that fintech adoption has become a major driver of banking efficiency and profitability. Studies indicate that digital financial innovations such as mobile banking and POS transactions significantly influence bank performance indicators like return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), and customer deposit growth in Nigeria’s banking sector (Adewumi & Ige, 2023). Similarly, fintech adoption has been associated with improved operational efficiency and broader financial inclusion (Usman & Umar, 2025).

However, fintech disruption is also considered a double-edged phenomenon. While it enhances efficiency, it also increases competitive pressure, reduces traditional fee-based income, and exposes banks to cybersecurity and operational risks (Ogbobe & Ezeala, 2024). This means that the effect of fintech on bank performance may vary depending on how effectively banks integrate digital technologies into their operations.

Access Bank and Zenith Bank are among the leading deposit money banks in Nigeria that have heavily invested in digital transformation strategies such as mobile banking platforms, USSD services, and fintech partnerships. Despite these investments, there is still uncertainty regarding the extent to which fintech innovation has improved their financial performance in measurable terms such as profitability and return on equity.

Therefore, understanding the relationship between fintech disruption and financial performance is essential for regulators, policymakers, investors, and bank management in assessing whether digital transformation enhances or undermines banking sustainability in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the rapid growth of fintech adoption in Nigeria’s banking sector, there remains conflicting empirical evidence regarding its impact on the financial performance of Deposit Money Banks. While some studies argue that fintech adoption enhances profitability, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction, others suggest that it may erode traditional banking income sources and intensify competition (Usman & Umar, 2025).

For example, fintech services such as mobile banking, POS transactions, and agency banking have improved transaction efficiency and financial accessibility. However, these innovations have also reduced reliance on traditional banking channels that generate significant fee-based income, thereby affecting revenue structures in commercial banks (Adewumi & Ige, 2023).

In Nigeria, Access Bank and Zenith Bank have made substantial investments in digital transformation, yet there is still debate about whether these investments translate into improved financial performance. Some scholars report positive effects of fintech adoption on bank performance, while others report mixed or insignificant effects depending on the methodology and performance indicators used (Ogbobe & Ezeala, 2024).

This inconsistency creates a significant research gap. Moreover, most existing studies have either focused on fintech adoption in general or on multiple banks without isolating leading institutions such as Access Bank and Zenith Bank, which are major players in Nigeria’s digital banking ecosystem.

Therefore, the core problem of this study is the lack of empirical consensus on whether fintech disruption significantly influences the financial performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria, particularly Access Bank and Zenith Bank.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of fintech disruption on the financial performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the effect of fintech adoption on the profitability of Access Bank and Zenith Bank.
2. Assess the impact of mobile banking services on the return on assets (ROA) of the selected banks.
3. Determine the influence of POS and USSD banking transactions on the revenue performance of Access Bank and Zenith Bank.
4. Evaluate the effect of fintech innovation on the overall financial performance (ROE and profit growth) of the selected banks.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. What is the effect of fintech adoption on the profitability of Access Bank and Zenith Bank?
2. How do mobile banking services affect the return on assets (ROA) of the selected banks?
3. To what extent do POS and USSD banking transactions influence the revenue performance of Access Bank and Zenith Bank?
4. What is the effect of fintech innovation on the overall financial performance (ROE and profit growth) of the selected banks?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study is guided by the following null hypothesis:

H₀: Fintech disruption has no significant effect on the financial performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria (Access Bank and Zenith Bank).

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several ways.

To bank management, it provides insights into how fintech adoption influences profitability and operational performance, helping improve digital investment decisions. For policymakers and regulators such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the findings will provide empirical evidence for designing policies that balance innovation and financial stability.

For investors, the study offers guidance on how digital transformation affects banking profitability and investment returns. For academics, it contributes to the growing literature on fintech disruption and banking performance in emerging economies like Nigeria (Usman & Umar, 2025).

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on fintech disruption and financial performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria, with specific reference to Access Bank Plc and Zenith Bank Plc. It examines fintech activities such as mobile banking, POS transactions, USSD banking, and digital platforms, and their impact on financial performance indicators such as profitability, ROA, and ROE. The study covers recent years of fintech expansion in Nigeria’s banking sector.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Fintech Disruption: The transformation of traditional banking services through digital technologies such as mobile banking and online financial platforms.

Deposit Money Banks (DMBs): Licensed commercial banks in Nigeria that accept deposits and provide financial services.

Financial Performance: A measure of a bank’s profitability and efficiency using indicators such as ROA, ROE, and profit margin.

Mobile Banking: Banking services conducted through mobile applications or USSD codes.

POS Transactions: Electronic payments made using point-of-sale terminals
