Project – Guidance and Counselling Strategies for Managing Social Media Addiction and Academic Performance Among Undergraduates

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The rapid advancement of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has transformed the way people communicate, learn, socialize, and access information globally. Among these technological innovations, social media has emerged as one of the most influential digital platforms in contemporary society. Social media refers to internet-based applications that enable users to create, share, and exchange information, ideas, messages, videos, and other forms of content through virtual communities and networks. Popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, X, and Snapchat have become integral parts of students’ daily lives, particularly among undergraduates who use them for communication, entertainment, information sharing, networking, and academic purposes.

The increasing accessibility of smartphones, laptops, and affordable internet services has contributed significantly to the widespread use of social media among university students. According to the International Telecommunication Union (2023), internet penetration has continued to rise globally, resulting in greater engagement with social networking platforms among young people. University students constitute one of the largest groups of social media users because of their familiarity with digital technologies and their desire for continuous social interaction. Social media has become an important educational tool that facilitates collaborative learning, access to academic resources, and communication between students and lecturers (Al-Rahmi, Yahaya, Aldraiweesh, Alamri, Aljarboa & Alturki, 2022).

Despite its numerous benefits, excessive and uncontrolled use of social media has generated concerns among educators, psychologists, counsellors, and parents. One of the emerging challenges associated with social media usage is social media addiction. Social media addiction refers to excessive, compulsive, and uncontrollable engagement with social networking platforms to the extent that it interferes with an individual’s daily activities, psychological well-being, interpersonal relationships, and academic responsibilities (Andreassen, 2021). Individuals experiencing social media addiction often exhibit symptoms such as excessive preoccupation with social media activities, inability to reduce usage, withdrawal symptoms when access is restricted, neglect of academic tasks, and continued use despite negative consequences.

The concept of social media addiction has attracted considerable scholarly attention due to its increasing prevalence among young adults and university students. Researchers have argued that social media platforms are deliberately designed to maximize user engagement through notifications, likes, comments, shares, and algorithm-driven content recommendations that encourage prolonged usage (Kuss & Griffiths, 2022). Consequently, many students spend substantial amounts of time on social media platforms at the expense of academic activities, sleep, and face-to-face social interactions.

Academic performance is a critical indicator of students’ success in higher education. It reflects the extent to which students achieve educational objectives and demonstrate mastery of academic content. Academic performance is commonly measured through grades, cumulative grade point averages (CGPA), examination results, and other academic achievements. Several factors influence students’ academic performance, including study habits, motivation, learning environment, time management skills, socio-economic status, psychological well-being, and technology usage patterns (Adeyemi & Adewale, 2021).

In recent years, concerns have emerged regarding the relationship between social media addiction and academic performance among undergraduates. Numerous studies have reported that excessive use of social media may negatively affect students’ academic outcomes by reducing study time, impairing concentration, promoting procrastination, and increasing distractions during learning activities (Alnjadat, Hmaidi, Samha, Kilani & Hasswan, 2019; Buctot, Kim & Kim, 2020). Students who spend excessive hours browsing social networking platforms often struggle to balance academic responsibilities with online activities, resulting in poor academic achievement.

Research conducted among university students in Nigeria has revealed that excessive social media use is associated with poor study habits, reduced classroom engagement, lower academic motivation, and declining academic performance (Oye, Helou, Rahim & Choo, 2021). The addictive nature of social media often leads students to prioritize virtual interactions over academic commitments. Consequently, some students experience difficulties completing assignments, preparing adequately for examinations, and maintaining satisfactory academic records.

The challenge of social media addiction has become particularly significant in higher institutions because undergraduates enjoy greater freedom and autonomy compared to secondary school students. Unlike younger learners who are closely monitored by parents and teachers, university students have unrestricted access to digital devices and internet services. This situation increases their vulnerability to excessive social media usage and its associated consequences. Studies indicate that prolonged engagement with social media can contribute to anxiety, depression, loneliness, poor time management, sleep disturbances, and academic underachievement among university students (Shannon, Bush, Villeneuve, Hellemans & Guimond, 2022).

Given the increasing prevalence of social media addiction among undergraduates, guidance and counselling services have become important intervention mechanisms for addressing the problem. Guidance and counselling involve professional services designed to assist individuals in understanding themselves, overcoming personal challenges, making informed decisions, and developing positive behavioural patterns. Within educational institutions, guidance and counselling services play significant roles in promoting students’ academic success, personal development, emotional well-being, and behavioural adjustment (Egbo, 2021).

Guidance and counselling strategies for managing social media addiction include individual counselling, group counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, psychoeducational programmes, time management training, behavioural modification techniques, peer counselling, and awareness campaigns. These strategies help students develop self-control, improve digital literacy, regulate social media usage, and adopt healthier behavioural patterns. Through counselling interventions, students can learn effective coping mechanisms for managing online temptations while maintaining focus on academic goals (Corey, 2021).

Theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that counselling interventions can significantly reduce addictive behaviours and improve academic outcomes among students. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), for example, has been widely recognized as an effective approach for addressing behavioural addictions, including excessive social media use. CBT helps individuals identify irrational thoughts and maladaptive behaviours associated with addiction while developing healthier alternatives (Beck, 2020). Similarly, psychoeducational interventions and time management counselling have been found to improve students’ academic engagement and reduce problematic social media use (Young, 2021).

At the University of Lagos, social media usage among undergraduates has become increasingly common due to the widespread availability of internet-enabled devices and campus connectivity. Students utilize social media for academic collaboration, communication, entertainment, and social networking. However, anecdotal observations and emerging research suggest that excessive engagement with social media may be affecting students’ academic productivity and performance. Despite the availability of counselling units and student support services within the university, concerns remain regarding the effectiveness of existing guidance and counselling strategies in addressing social media addiction among undergraduates.

Furthermore, while several studies have examined the effects of social media usage on students’ academic performance, limited attention has been given to the role of guidance and counselling strategies in managing social media addiction and enhancing academic performance among undergraduates in Nigerian universities. This gap in knowledge necessitates an empirical investigation into the effectiveness of guidance and counselling strategies for managing social media addiction and academic performance among undergraduates at the University of Lagos.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The increasing use of social media among university students has created both opportunities and challenges within higher education institutions. While social media platforms facilitate communication, information sharing, collaborative learning, and social interaction, their excessive use has raised serious concerns regarding students’ academic performance and overall well-being. Many undergraduates spend substantial portions of their time engaging with social networking platforms, often at the expense of academic responsibilities and productive learning activities.

Recent studies indicate that social media addiction has become a growing problem among university students worldwide. Students who experience social media addiction often exhibit compulsive online behaviour, poor time management, reduced concentration, procrastination, and difficulty balancing academic obligations with social media activities (Andreassen, 2021; Kuss & Griffiths, 2022). Such behaviours can negatively affect learning outcomes and academic achievement.

In Nigeria, the widespread availability of smartphones and internet connectivity has increased students’ exposure to social media platforms. Consequently, concerns have emerged regarding the impact of excessive social media usage on undergraduates’ academic performance. Many students reportedly spend long hours browsing social networking sites, watching online videos, participating in virtual discussions, and engaging in entertainment-related activities rather than focusing on academic work. This situation has contributed to declining study habits, poor academic engagement, and reduced academic productivity among some students (Oye et al., 2021).

At the University of Lagos, social media usage has become an integral aspect of students’ daily lives. Although social media provides opportunities for academic collaboration and communication, there are increasing concerns that some students are becoming excessively dependent on these platforms. Evidence suggests that excessive social media use may contribute to poor academic performance, low classroom participation, reduced study time, and inability to complete academic tasks effectively. Despite these challenges, many students continue to struggle with controlling their social media usage.

Guidance and counselling services are expected to assist students in overcoming behavioural challenges and developing positive habits that promote academic success. Various counselling strategies such as individual counselling, group counselling, behavioural modification programmes, cognitive behavioural therapy, and time management training have been recommended for addressing social media addiction. However, the extent to which these strategies effectively manage social media addiction and improve academic performance among undergraduates at the University of Lagos remains unclear.

Although previous studies have examined social media usage and academic performance, limited empirical evidence exists regarding the effectiveness of guidance and counselling strategies in managing social media addiction among undergraduates in the Nigerian university context. Therefore, the problem of this study is to determine the effectiveness of guidance and counselling strategies for managing social media addiction and academic performance among undergraduates at the University of Lagos, Nigeria.
