INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The rapid growth of urban populations has increased the quantity and diversity of solid waste generated by households. Urbanisation, changing consumption patterns, increasing use of packaged products and rising standards of living have contributed to the growing volume of municipal solid waste in cities around the world. Waste management has therefore become an important component of urban environmental governance and sustainable development. The challenge is not simply the removal of waste from residential areas but the development of systems that minimise waste generation, promote reuse and recycling, recover valuable materials and reduce the environmental impacts associated with disposal.
Households occupy an important position in the solid waste management chain because they are among the primary points at which waste is generated. Household decisions concerning storage, sorting, reuse, recycling and disposal influence what ultimately enters municipal waste streams. Waste sorting involves separating waste into categories such as organic materials, plastics, paper, metals, glass and other residual materials before collection or disposal. Source separation is particularly important because mixed waste is more difficult and costly to recover, while separated materials can be channelled into recycling, composting and other resource-recovery processes. A recent review of household solid waste management in Nigeria identifies sorting or segregation as an important practice for determining appropriate treatment methods and encouraging recycling and environmentally responsible behaviour (Frontiers in Sustainability, 2024).
The concept of urban environmental sustainability extends beyond keeping streets clean. It concerns the ability of urban communities to meet present environmental and socioeconomic needs without undermining the capacity of future generations to meet theirs. Sustainable urban waste management therefore involves reducing environmental pollution, conserving natural resources, reducing pressure on landfill sites, preventing the blockage of drainage channels and recovering resources from materials that would otherwise be discarded. The Lagos Resilience Strategy specifically identifies integrated waste management, including waste sorting, recycling and reuse, as an important component of building a more resilient and sustainable Lagos. It notes that sorting at household level can conserve natural resources, reduce landfill pressure, save energy and reduce pollution.
The importance of household participation is particularly evident in Lagos State. Lagos is one of Africa’s largest and most rapidly growing metropolitan areas, characterised by high population density, extensive residential and commercial activity and significant daily waste generation. The Lagos State Government reported in 2025 that the state generates approximately 13,000–14,000 tonnes of waste daily and acknowledged the need to move beyond the traditional linear “pick and dump” system toward a more sustainable system in which waste can be converted into resources. This transition makes household waste sorting increasingly important because materials that could be reused or recycled are more easily recovered when separated at the point of generation.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has consequently promoted waste segregation and recycling as part of its environmental sustainability efforts. LAWMA reports that it has distributed specially designed bins in markets, malls, schools and other public spaces for the segregation of recyclable materials such as PET bottles, aluminium cans and plastics. The agency considers source segregation important for encouraging residents to develop a culture of waste sorting. LAWMA also maintains a list of registered recyclers and household collection arrangements, demonstrating the growing institutional infrastructure for integrating recycling into Lagos’ waste-management system.
Despite these efforts, waste management remains a significant challenge in Lagos. Kofoworola (2007), in an assessment of recovery and recycling practices in Lagos, observed that large quantities of municipal solid waste were generated in the city and that inadequate collection and disposal systems contributed to environmental problems. The study emphasised the importance of improving recovery and recycling practices as part of more effective municipal solid waste management. Although Lagos’ waste-management system has evolved considerably since that study, the underlying issue of how households participate in waste recovery and separation remains relevant.
Similarly, Ojewale (2014) examined domestic solid waste disposal practices across different residential densities in Lagos metropolis. The study found that socioeconomic characteristics such as income, age, educational status, residential density and length of stay influenced disposal methods. More importantly, several disposal methods identified in the study were not environmentally friendly, including disposal on roads, dumping in drains and dumping in open spaces. These findings demonstrate that household behaviour is a significant component of the environmental consequences of urban waste management.
The social and cultural dimensions of waste management are also important. Olukoju (2018) examined household solid waste management in traditional Yoruba society and contemporary Lagos and demonstrated that waste practices are shaped by household behaviour, changing lifestyles, consumption patterns, residential characteristics and interactions between state and non-state actors. This suggests that household waste sorting cannot be understood simply as a technical environmental activity. People’s attitudes, knowledge, habits, perceptions of responsibility and interaction with waste-management institutions can determine whether sorting practices become routine.
Evidence from Lagos also indicates that household waste practices are influenced by the availability and effectiveness of waste-management services. Aliu, Adeyemi and Adebayo (2014), in their study of household solid waste collection in Lagos, found differences in waste-generation quantities across residential-density areas and examined the performance of public-private partnership arrangements in waste collection. Anestina et al. (2014) similarly found that residents valued door-to-door waste collection but that problems such as overflowing bins, unpleasant odours and delayed collection affected perceptions of cleanliness and service performance. These findings imply that household behaviour and the wider waste-management system are interconnected.
The relationship between household behaviour and environmental outcomes is further demonstrated by a study of waste disposal practices in the coastal city of Lagos. The study, involving 600 households, found that 67.42% of households engaged in illegal waste disposal. Household size, participation in community clean-up activities, receipt of waste-management information, payment of waste-management fees and the presence of a dumpster were among the factors associated with the likelihood of illegal disposal. The study also found considerable willingness among households to participate in environmental clean-up activities (Oyekale, 2022). This evidence demonstrates that information, infrastructure, previous participation and institutional arrangements can influence household environmental practices.
Waste sorting is particularly important because mixed household waste reduces the possibility of efficient material recovery. When recyclable materials are mixed with food waste and other contaminants, their recovery becomes more difficult and the economic value of the materials may decline. Conversely, separating recyclable materials at source can improve the quality of recovered materials and facilitate recycling. In a sustainable waste-management system, therefore, the household is not merely the point at which waste is generated; it is also a potential point of resource recovery.
Economic incentives can also influence household participation. Recyclable materials such as plastics, metals, cardboard and paper may possess economic value and can enter recycling supply chains. In 2025, the Lagos State Government reported that LAWMA was encouraging residents to view waste as a resource and promoting circular-economy practices. LAWMA’s stated objective includes increasing recycling and encouraging households to maintain separate waste streams for general waste and recyclable materials. Such initiatives illustrate the movement from a traditional disposal-oriented approach toward a circular economy in which waste materials are retained within productive systems for as long as possible.
The circular-economy approach is relevant to urban environmental sustainability because it seeks to reduce dependence on virgin resources and minimise the amount of waste requiring final disposal. At household level, this can involve reducing unnecessary consumption, reusing products, separating recyclables, composting biodegradable waste and ensuring that residual waste reaches appropriate collection points. Household waste sorting is therefore a practical behaviour through which residents can contribute to wider sustainability goals.
Lekki Phase 1 provides an important setting for examining these practices. The community is a highly developed residential area within Lagos State and is characterised by organised residential streets, estates, commercial establishments and relatively high-value housing. The Lekki Phase 1 Residents’ Association reports that the scheme has been organised into 11 zones and that the residents’ association has existed since 1997. The socioeconomic characteristics and relatively developed built environment of the area make it useful for examining whether household resources, environmental awareness and access to waste services translate into consistent waste-sorting behaviour.
Importantly, previous research on sustainable waste management in Lagos has included Lekki Phase 1 among locations investigated alongside other urban communities. A University of Lagos study examining sustainable waste-management practices included Lekki Phase 1, Makoko, Bariga, Lagos Mainland and UNILAG and its environs. The study reported that residents used several waste-disposal approaches, including disposal within settlements, doorstep collection, garbage pits and roadside disposal. Although such findings provide useful evidence of waste-management behaviour in Lekki Phase 1, there remains a need for a focused study specifically examining household waste sorting and its implications for urban environmental sustainability.
The relevance of this issue is reinforced by continuing environmental-management challenges in Lagos. Recent government interventions have emphasised waste sorting, recycling, community participation and the reduction of waste entering landfills. The Lagos State Government has explicitly stated that it is seeking to move from a linear waste-management model toward one in which waste becomes a resource. This transition cannot be achieved solely through government agencies or private waste collectors. Household participation is essential because waste is generated and initially handled at household level.
Waste sorting practices may also contribute to cleaner neighbourhoods and reduced environmental risks. Improperly discarded plastics and other materials can enter drainage channels and waterways, contribute to flooding and degrade urban aesthetics. Lagos’ location within a coastal and aquatic environment makes this particularly important. LAWMA has identified marine waste management as part of its environmental strategy, including the removal of waste from waterways and coastal areas. Preventing recyclable and other waste materials from entering the wider environment through appropriate household handling can therefore contribute to both land-based and aquatic environmental protection.
The study of household waste-sorting practices in Lekki Phase 1 is therefore significant because it connects individual household behaviour with broader questions of urban sustainability. It seeks to establish whether residents actually sort their waste, the forms of sorting commonly practised, the factors encouraging or discouraging sorting, the extent to which residents have access to appropriate facilities and information, and the perceived contribution of sorting to environmental cleanliness and sustainability.
The study is also relevant because the existence of waste-management infrastructure does not automatically guarantee environmentally responsible behaviour. Residents may have access to waste collection services but may still mix recyclable and non-recyclable waste. Similarly, residents may possess environmental knowledge but fail to translate that knowledge into regular household sorting. Understanding this knowledge-practice gap is essential for designing interventions that are realistic and effective within an urban residential community.
Consequently, this study focuses on Household Waste-Sorting Practices and Urban Environmental Sustainability: A Study of Residents of Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State. The study will examine household sorting behaviour, factors influencing such behaviour and the perceived implications of sorting practices for environmental sustainability. The findings are expected to contribute to discussions on sustainable urban waste management and provide evidence that may assist environmental agencies, community associations and households in strengthening waste-sorting practices.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The management of household solid waste remains a major environmental challenge in rapidly urbanising cities. The problem is not limited to the quantity of waste generated but also concerns how waste is stored, separated, collected, transported, recovered and ultimately disposed of. Where recyclable and biodegradable materials are mixed with residual waste, opportunities for material recovery are reduced and greater quantities of waste may be transported to dumpsites or landfills. Inadequate waste management can also contribute to littering, unpleasant odours, blocked drainage channels, flooding and degradation of urban environmental quality.
In Lagos State, the scale of waste generation makes household participation particularly important. The state government reported in 2025 that Lagos generates approximately 13,000–14,000 tonnes of waste daily and acknowledged the need to transition from a linear collection-and-disposal model to a more sustainable system. While the government and LAWMA have introduced recycling initiatives, household behaviour remains an important determinant of whether recyclable materials are recovered before entering the general waste stream.
The problem is further illustrated by evidence from Lagos households. Oyekale (2022) found that 67.42% of surveyed households in the coastal city of Lagos engaged in illegal waste disposal. The study also demonstrated that factors such as waste-management information, payment of waste-management fees, availability of dumpsters and previous participation in community clean-up activities influenced disposal behaviour. These findings suggest that environmental behaviour is influenced by both individual and structural conditions.
Previous studies have also identified environmentally unfriendly disposal methods among residents of Lagos. Ojewale (2014) found that some residents disposed of household waste on roads, in drains and in open spaces, with socioeconomic characteristics influencing disposal choices. Such practices are problematic because waste disposed in drains can obstruct water flow and contribute to flooding, while waste deposited in open spaces can create unsanitary conditions and degrade the appearance of residential environments.
Despite these challenges, the focus of many waste-management interventions has traditionally been on collection and final disposal rather than what happens at the point of waste generation. Household waste sorting represents an important opportunity to address this gap. If households separate recyclable materials before disposal, recyclable items can potentially be recovered more efficiently, while organic materials may be directed toward composting and other appropriate treatment processes. The Lagos Resilience Strategy recognises this logic by identifying household-level sorting as the starting point for an integrated waste-management system and circular economy.
However, the existence of sorting policies and recycling programmes does not necessarily mean that households consistently practise source separation. LAWMA has promoted separate collection of recyclable materials and has distributed recycling bins in different public locations. The agency has also promoted a vision in which households maintain separate streams for general waste and recyclables. The continuing question is whether these initiatives have translated into regular household sorting practices in residential communities.
Lekki Phase 1 is particularly important in this regard. The area is generally perceived as a relatively developed residential community with organised housing, estates, commercial activities and residents who may have greater access to information and environmental services than residents of some less-developed settlements. Nevertheless, previous Lagos research has included Lekki Phase 1 among communities where different waste-disposal practices were observed. This raises an important question: does a relatively developed residential environment necessarily translate into consistent household waste sorting?
There is also a possible gap between environmental awareness and actual household practice. Residents may understand that recycling and sorting are beneficial but may not separate waste because of inadequate bins, lack of convenient collection arrangements, insufficient information, inconvenience, absence of financial incentives, uncertainty about where sorted waste goes or the belief that waste collectors eventually mix separated materials. Conversely, some residents may sort waste because of environmental concerns, economic benefits or social expectations. The relative importance of these factors needs to be established empirically.
Another problem concerns the relationship between household waste sorting and broader urban environmental sustainability. While waste sorting is widely promoted as an environmentally responsible practice, it is important to establish how residents perceive its actual environmental benefits. These may include reduction of litter, conservation of resources, improved neighbourhood cleanliness, reduction in landfill waste, increased recycling and reduced pressure on drainage and disposal systems. Without understanding these relationships at household level, sustainability interventions may fail to address the behavioural factors that determine their effectiveness.
Furthermore, existing studies in Lagos have often examined general waste disposal, collection systems or municipal waste-management performance rather than focusing specifically on household waste-sorting practices within Lekki Phase 1. For example, earlier studies have investigated disposal methods across different residential densities in Lagos (Ojewale, 2014), public-private waste collection performance (Aliu et al., 2014), and broader recovery and recycling practices (Kofoworola, 2007). These studies provide important background but do not fully answer the question of how households in Lekki Phase 1 practise waste sorting and what factors determine their participation.
The central problem, therefore, is that although Lagos State is increasingly promoting waste sorting, recycling and circular-economy principles, there is insufficient focused evidence on the extent to which households in Lekki Phase 1 actually practise waste sorting and how these practices relate to urban environmental sustainability. Without such evidence, it is difficult to determine whether existing awareness campaigns, collection arrangements and recycling initiatives are sufficiently influencing household behaviour.
This study therefore seeks to investigate household waste-sorting practices among residents of Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State. Specifically, it will examine the common forms of waste sorting, the factors influencing household participation, the availability of sorting facilities and information, the barriers to effective sorting, and the perceived contribution of household sorting to urban environmental sustainability.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine household waste-sorting practices and their implications for urban environmental sustainability among residents of Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- examine the extent to which residents of Lekki Phase 1 practise household waste sorting;
- identify the major types of household waste commonly separated by residents;
- determine the factors influencing household waste-sorting practices among residents;
- examine the availability of waste-sorting facilities and information to households in Lekki Phase 1.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide the study:
- To what extent do residents of Lekki Phase 1 practise household waste sorting?
- What types of household waste are commonly separated by residents of Lekki Phase 1?
- What factors influence household waste-sorting practices among residents?
- To what extent are waste-sorting facilities and information available to households in Lekki Phase 1?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between household waste-sorting practices and urban environmental sustainability among residents of Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study will be significant to households and residents of Lekki Phase 1 because it will increase understanding of the environmental importance of separating waste at source. The findings may encourage residents to adopt more consistent practices relating to the separation, storage, reuse and recycling of household waste.
The study will also be useful to Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and other environmental management agencies. The findings may provide evidence on residents’ actual waste-sorting behaviour, the barriers they experience and the types of interventions that may encourage greater participation. Such evidence may assist in designing more targeted awareness campaigns, collection arrangements and recycling programmes.
The study will benefit community associations and estate managers in Lekki Phase 1. Community organisations can use the findings to develop local environmental initiatives, provide appropriate waste-sorting facilities, support recycling drives and encourage residents to participate in sustainable waste-management programmes.
The study will also be valuable to environmental policymakers and urban planners. Information concerning household participation in waste sorting can support policies that seek to move Lagos from a predominantly disposal-oriented waste-management model toward an integrated and circular system. This is consistent with Lagos State’s stated emphasis on waste sorting, recycling, resource recovery and environmental sustainability.
The study will contribute to environmental sustainability scholarship by providing empirical evidence from a specific urban residential community. It may help researchers better understand the relationship between household behaviour, waste-management systems and urban environmental outcomes in Lagos.
Finally, the study will serve as a useful reference for future researchers and students undertaking studies on household waste management, recycling behaviour, environmental sustainability, urban sanitation and community participation in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study is focused on Household Waste-Sorting Practices and Urban Environmental Sustainability among Residents of Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State.
The content scope covers household waste-sorting behaviour, types of waste separated, frequency of sorting, reasons for sorting, availability of sorting facilities, sources of information, incentives, barriers and residents’ perceptions of the environmental benefits of sorting.
The geographical scope is restricted to Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State. The study will focus on residents who are members of households within the selected study area.
The study will not attempt to examine the technical operations of recycling companies, landfill engineering, industrial waste management or the entire waste-management system of Lagos State. Its primary concern is the role of households in sorting waste at the point of generation and the implications of such practices for urban environmental sustainability.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
One limitation of the study may be the possibility of social desirability bias. Respondents may report environmentally responsible behaviours because they consider such responses socially acceptable, even where their actual practices differ.
Another limitation may be the self-reported nature of the data. The study will primarily depend on respondents’ accounts of their household waste-sorting practices. Direct observation of household waste practices may not be possible for every respondent.
The study may also be affected by limited time and financial resources, which could restrict the number of households that can be surveyed. Nevertheless, appropriate sampling procedures will be employed to obtain useful and representative information from the selected population.
Another possible limitation is that waste-management arrangements may vary among streets, estates and residential compounds within Lekki Phase 1. Consequently, findings may reflect variations in local collection arrangements and should not automatically be generalised to every residential area in Lagos State.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
Household Waste: Materials discarded as a result of routine domestic activities, including food remains, plastics, paper, glass, metals, textiles and other household refuse.
Waste Sorting: The process of separating household waste into different categories according to material type, composition or potential for reuse, recycling, composting or other treatment.
Waste Segregation: The separation of different categories of waste at the point where waste is generated before collection, transportation or disposal.
Recyclable Waste: Waste materials such as plastics, paper, cardboard, metals and glass that can potentially be recovered and processed into new materials or products.
Household Waste-Sorting Practices: The actual behaviours adopted by households in separating, storing and preparing different categories of waste for recycling, reuse, composting or appropriate disposal.
Urban Environmental Sustainability: The capacity of an urban community to manage its environmental resources and activities in ways that maintain environmental quality, reduce pollution, conserve resources and protect the interests of present and future generations.
Recycling: The process of recovering and processing discarded materials into new products or materials.
Source Separation: The separation of waste by households at the point where it is generated before it enters the general waste stream.
Waste Management: The activities involved in the generation, storage, collection, transportation, treatment, recovery and disposal of waste.
Environmental Awareness: The extent to which individuals understand environmental problems, their causes, consequences and possible solutions.
Lekki Phase 1: A residential and mixed-use community in Lagos State that serves as the geographical setting for this study.
1.10 Organisation of the Study
The study will be organised into five chapters.
Chapter One presents the introduction, including the background to the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, research questions, hypothesis, significance, scope, limitations and operational definitions of terms.
Chapter Two will review relevant literature on household waste management, waste sorting, recycling, environmental sustainability, household environmental behaviour and related empirical studies. It will also present the theoretical framework and identify gaps in existing literature.
Chapter Three will present the research methodology, including the research design, study area, population of the study, sample size, sampling procedure, research instrument, validity and reliability, data-collection procedure, method of data analysis and ethical considerations.
Chapter Four will present and analyse the data collected from respondents. The research questions will be answered and the stated hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance.
Chapter Five will present the summary of findings, conclusion and recommendations based on the results of the study.
