CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The global accounting and auditing profession is undergoing a rapid transformation driven by technological innovations such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Blockchain. These technologies have redefined how data are collected, processed, analyzed, and reported, thereby improving accuracy, efficiency, and decision-making processes in financial and auditing systems (Appelbaum et al., 2017). In Nigeria, as in other developing economies, the adoption of these technologies has begun to reshape traditional accounting and auditing methods, though at a relatively slow pace compared to developed nations (Afolabi & Akindele, 2022).
Artificial Intelligence enables accounting and auditing professionals to automate repetitive and time-consuming tasks, thus enhancing operational efficiency and minimizing human errors (Brynjolfsson & McAfee, 2017). Similarly, Machine Learning allows systems to learn from financial data patterns, detect anomalies, and predict risks—an essential feature for fraud detection and predictive auditing (Brown-Liburd et al., 2015). Blockchain technology, with its decentralized and immutable ledger system, enhances transparency and security of financial transactions, which are critical in strengthening trust and integrity in financial reporting (Dai & Vasarhelyi, 2017).
In Nigeria, financial institutions and audit firms are beginning to explore AI, ML, and Blockchain to address challenges such as financial fraud, data manipulation, and unreliable reporting systems (Eke & Ogbodo, 2023). However, the implementation process is constrained by infrastructural deficits, limited technical expertise, and inadequate regulatory frameworks (Olowolagba & Ajayi, 2022). Therefore, it is essential to assess how the integration of these technologies influences financial reporting accuracy, fraud detection efficiency, and audit quality within Nigerian firms.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the global recognition of AI, ML, and Blockchain as transformative tools in accounting and auditing, Nigerian organizations face significant challenges in adopting and integrating these technologies effectively. Many firms still rely on manual processes, leading to inefficiencies, data inaccuracies, and increased exposure to financial fraud (Oladipo, 2021). Moreover, regulatory agencies such as the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) and Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) have yet to establish comprehensive guidelines to govern the ethical and technical application of these technologies (Afolabi & Akindele, 2022).
The gap between technological awareness and actual implementation has created inconsistencies in financial reporting and audit effectiveness. While some Nigerian banks and multinational companies have begun to leverage AI-driven analytics and blockchain-enabled ledgers, many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) remain far behind (Eke & Ogbodo, 2023). Thus, it becomes imperative to empirically investigate the impact of AI, ML, and Blockchain on financial and auditing effectiveness in Nigeria.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Blockchain technologies on financial and auditing effectiveness in Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant to policymakers, accounting professionals, and academic researchers. For accounting professionals, it offers evidence on how emerging technologies can improve audit accuracy and financial reporting standards. Furthermore, it contributes to academic literature on technology-driven auditing practices in emerging economies, thus serving as a reference point for future research (Appelbaum et al., 2017; Afolabi & Akindele, 2022).
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on selected accounting and auditing firms, including financial institutions, in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The research will explore the level of awareness, adoption, and perceived impact of AI, ML, and Blockchain technologies on financial and auditing effectiveness. The time frame considered spans from 2019 to 2024, a period marked by increasing digital transformation efforts in Nigeria’s financial sector.
