INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Education is widely recognized as the cornerstone of national development and individual empowerment. Higher education institutions play a crucial role in equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to meet societal and labor market demands (Okebukola, 2018). However, the academic calendar and learning process in Nigerian universities have been repeatedly disrupted by industrial actions, particularly those involving the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The ASUU strikes have become a recurring phenomenon in Nigeria, primarily motivated by disputes over funding, salaries, benefits, and the condition of service for academic staff (Obi, 2019). While the objectives of the strikes are intended to improve the quality of education and ensure fair treatment of staff, prolonged disruptions often have unintended consequences on students’ academic progress, psychological well-being, and adjustment to studies. Adjustment to studies involves the process by which students adapt to the academic demands, routines, and social environment of higher education. It encompasses effective time management, coping with academic stress, developing study habits, and integrating socially within the institution (Adejumo & Olajide, 2020).

When strikes occur, students face extended academic calendars, delayed graduations, increased workload, and disrupted learning routines. These interruptions can lead to frustration, anxiety, lack of motivation, and difficulty in managing academic responsibilities effectively. Furthermore, students may experience social and emotional challenges, including feelings of uncertainty about their future, low self-esteem, and poor engagement in academic activities. In the context of higher institutions, the impact of ASUU strikes goes beyond mere academic delay; it influences students’ overall adjustment, satisfaction, and ability to succeed in their studies (Okoro, 2017).

Given the frequency of strikes and their implications for academic continuity, it is imperative to examine how ASUU strikes affect students’ adjustment to studies in higher institutions. Understanding this impact can inform interventions by university management, counselors, and policymakers to mitigate negative consequences and support students in adapting effectively to disrupted academic environments.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The persistent occurrence of ASUU strikes has posed a significant challenge to students’ academic adjustment in Nigerian higher institutions. Students are often forced to cope with extended periods of academic inactivity, leading to stress, loss of concentration, and disrupted study habits. The unpredictability of strikes creates uncertainty about the completion of courses and graduation timelines, which negatively affects students’ motivation and academic performance (Obi, 2019).

Moreover, repeated strikes can affect students’ psychological and social adjustment. Some students experience anxiety, frustration, and a sense of helplessness due to prolonged waiting periods for academic resumption. The pressure to catch up on delayed coursework upon resumption often results in poor time management, reduced engagement in learning activities, and increased academic stress (Adejumo & Olajide, 2020). In addition, students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds may face heightened challenges as prolonged strikes increase living costs and academic expenses.

Despite these evident challenges, there is limited empirical research on the direct impact of ASUU strikes on students’ adjustment to studies across Nigerian universities. Most studies focus on the general consequences of industrial actions on academic calendars, while the psychological, social, and academic adjustment of students remains underexplored. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the impact of ASUU strikes on students’ adjustment to studies in higher institutions, providing insights for counseling interventions and institutional policy reforms.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to investigate the impact of ASUU strikes on students’ adjustment to studies in higher institutions. The specific objectives include:

1. To examine how ASUU strikes affect students’ academic adjustment, including study habits and engagement.

2. To assess the psychological and social impact of ASUU strikes on students’ ability to adjust to academic life.

3. To identify coping strategies employed by students during periods of industrial action.

4. To provide recommendations for mitigating the negative effects of strikes on students’ adjustment.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How do ASUU strikes affect students’ academic adjustment in higher institutions?

2. What are the psychological and social effects of ASUU strikes on students’ adjustment?

3. What coping strategies do students employ during ASUU strikes to maintain academic engagement?

1.5 Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: ASUU strikes have no significant impact on students’ adjustment to studies in higher institutions.
H₁: ASUU strikes have a significant impact on students’ adjustment to studies in higher institutions.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be valuable to various stakeholders:

• University Management: It will provide insights on the consequences of prolonged strikes on students and inform policies to support students during disruptions.

• Students: The study will highlight the effects of strikes on academic and psychological adjustment, helping students develop coping strategies.

• Counselors and Psychologists: Findings will guide counseling programs aimed at enhancing students’ adjustment during academic disruptions.

• Policy Makers: The study will inform educational policies and industrial relations practices to reduce the negative impact of strikes on students.

• Researchers: It will contribute to the academic literature on the effects of industrial actions on student adjustment in higher education.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on students in higher institutions affected by ASUU strikes. It examines the impact of strikes on academic, psychological, and social adjustment. The study is limited to selected universities within Nigeria, capturing students’ experiences over the last ten years (2014–2024), a period characterized by frequent industrial actions.

1.8 Limitation of the Study

The study may encounter several limitations:

• Potential bias in student responses, as participants may overstate or understate the impact of strikes.

• Limited access to official institutional data on academic disruptions due to confidentiality.

• Time constraints in collecting data across multiple institutions.

These limitations will be mitigated through the use of structured questionnaires, ensuring anonymity, and ethical research practices.

1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

• ASUU Strike: Industrial action undertaken by the Academic Staff Union of Universities in Nigeria to demand better conditions of service or funding.

• Student Adjustment: The ability of students to adapt to the academic, social, and psychological demands of university life.

• Academic Adjustment: Effective management of study routines, coursework, and engagement with academic activities.

• Industrial Action: Any collective work stoppage by employees aimed at achieving specific organizational or employment objectives.
