Project – Impact of Christmas Celebration on Church Members’ faith. A Study of five selected Churches in Lagos
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Christmas is one of the most significant celebrations in the Christian calendar, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. For Christians worldwide, it is a period of spiritual reflection, worship, and communal gatherings, which can reinforce faith and religious commitment (Ojo, 2016). In Nigeria, particularly in urban centers like Lagos, Christmas celebrations are not only religious events but also cultural phenomena, often characterized by church programs, carol services, community outreach, and social gatherings among believers (Adeyemi & Ogunleye, 2018).
Religious scholars and sociologists have long suggested that ritualistic and communal celebrations strengthen religious identity and adherence (Durkheim, 1912; Turner, 1969). The celebration of Christmas can provide church members with a renewed sense of belonging, spiritual motivation, and moral reinforcement. The event often includes sermons, testimonies, and special prayers that encourage reflection on personal faith, spiritual growth, and commitment to Christian values (Okoye, 2020).
In Lagos, where Christianity is practiced by a substantial portion of the population, churches of various denominations organize Christmas activities aimed at nurturing the spiritual life of members. These activities range from festive worship services to charity drives, musical performances, and youth fellowship programs. Beyond the ritual, such celebrations can influence church members’ attitudes, engagement in church activities, and the practice of faith in daily life (Ajibade, 2019).
Despite the cultural and religious significance of Christmas, there is limited empirical research in Nigeria examining how the celebration specifically impacts church members’ faith. Understanding this relationship is critical because faith influences church attendance, spiritual practices, moral behavior, and the overall vitality of religious communities (Ezenwaji, 2017). This study focuses on five selected churches in Lagos, representing different denominations, to assess how Christmas celebrations contribute to members’ spiritual experiences, devotion, and faith development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although Christmas is celebrated widely across Nigerian churches, questions remain regarding its actual impact on members’ faith. While many church members participate in festive activities, it is unclear whether these celebrations translate into sustained spiritual growth, moral commitment, and deeper faith, or if they are merely seasonal and ritualistic observances (Ojo, 2016; Okoye, 2020).
Some church leaders argue that Christmas provides opportunities for spiritual revival, testimony sharing, and communal bonding that enhance members’ faith (Ajibade, 2019). However, critics suggest that celebrations often focus more on socializing, material gifting, and entertainment rather than spiritual enrichment, potentially leading to temporary enthusiasm without long-term faith development (Adeyemi & Ogunleye, 2018).
In Lagos, where churches vary in size, resources, and approaches to Christmas programs, there is little research exploring whether and how these celebrations strengthen or weaken the faith of congregants. This knowledge gap limits churches’ ability to design Christmas activities that foster genuine spiritual growth. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the impact of Christmas celebrations on church members’ faith in five selected churches in Lagos, providing insights into the spiritual and religious benefits of the festivities.
