1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Marriage is one of the most important social institutions in human society. It provides emotional support, social identity, economic cooperation, and forms the foundational unit of family and community life. However, marriage is not without challenges. Research consistently shows that effective communication and conflict resolution are major determinants of marital satisfaction, stability, and longevity (Gottman & Notarius, 2000; Markman, Stanley & Blumberg, 2010). Poor communication patterns and unresolved conflicts are among the leading predictors of marital distress and divorce globally (Bradbury, Fincham & Beach, 2000).

In the context of Nigeria, and particularly within religious communities such as the Catholic Church, marriage is both a sacred covenant and a lifelong commitment. The Catholic Church places a strong emphasis on the spiritual, moral, and relational preparation of couples through structured pre‑marital counseling (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1994). This counseling is intended to equip engaged couples with the theological grounding, interpersonal skills, and practical tools necessary for marital success, including conflict management and effective communication.

Church‑based pre‑marital counseling often includes topics such as understanding marital roles, building effective communication skills, recognizing sources of conflict, and developing strategies for resolving disagreements in a constructive and faith‑centered manner (Ogbu, 2017; Okafor, 2019). Given the pervasive role of religion in Nigerian society, and the influence of the Catholic Church in shaping marital expectations, it is important to understand how these counseling programs impact real relational outcomes among engaged couples — specifically regarding communication and conflict resolution.

This study examines the impact of church‑based pre‑marital counseling on conflict resolution and communication among engaged couples in selected Catholic churches in Enugu North Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria.

Conflict and communication are universal aspects of human relationships. While conflict is inevitable in marital relationships, the manner in which couples manage it is critical to their relational health. Constructive conflict resolution involves listening, empathy, problem‑solving, compromise, and mutual respect, whereas destructive conflict often involves hostility, withdrawal, contempt, and avoidance (Gottman, 1994; Fincham & Beach, 2010). Communication, similarly, is the medium through which feelings, needs, expectations, and disagreements are expressed. Couples who communicate openly, respectfully, and effectively are more likely to experience marital satisfaction compared to those who struggle with negative communication patterns (Epstein & Baucom, 2002).

Church‑based pre‑marital counseling in the Catholic tradition typically integrates Scripture, sacramental theology, and relational skills training. Couples are encouraged to understand marriage as a vocation and a covenant that requires patience, sacrifice, humility, and continuous growth. Topics often include conflict triggers, forgiveness, active listening, negotiation, and communication styles. The underlying premise is that spiritually informed relational preparation can enhance couples’ abilities to navigate marital challenges (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1994; Ajetunmobi & Adeyemo, 2014).

Studies on pre‑marital counseling suggest positive associations with improved communication skills, reduced relational distress, and stronger marital commitment (Halford, Markman & Stanley, 2008; Hawkins, Carroll, Doherty & Willoughby, 2004). However, much of this research is based in Western contexts and may not fully capture religious‑based counseling dynamics in sub‑Saharan Africa. In Nigeria, studies on pre‑marital counseling have focused on general attitudes toward counseling or its role in marital readiness, but few have empirically investigated its influence on specific relational outcomes such as conflict resolution and communication among engaged couples (Nwokocha & Agu, 2015; Okeke, 2018).

Enugu North Local Government Area, like many urban communities in Southeastern Nigeria, has vibrant Catholic congregations that actively promote pre‑marital counseling as part of matrimonial preparation. However, there remains a gap in empirical evidence regarding how these counseling programs influence engaged couples’ communication skills and conflict resolution abilities prior to marriage. Understanding this impact is essential for church leaders, couples, and family counselors to assess the effectiveness of present counseling models and to inform potential improvements.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the widespread practice of church‑based pre‑marital counseling in Catholic parishes, many couples still report challenges with communication and conflict resolution when they enter marriage. In some cases, couples participate in Counseling programmes but lack measurable improvements in their interpersonal skills, leading to early marital dissatisfaction and relational breakdown (Onwuegbuzie, 2014). Although church pastoral teams invest time in premarital sessions, it is unclear whether these interventions truly influence couples’ abilities to manage disagreements and communicate effectively.

While global research indicates that pre‑marital counseling can improve relational outcomes, there is limited empirical evidence from Nigerian Catholic contexts, particularly in Enugu North. Without localized data, pastoral planners, counselors, and church leadership lack critical feedback on the impact of counseling practices and are unable to refine their approaches to better support engaged couples. Therefore, there is a need to systematically examine the influence of church‑based pre‑marital counseling on conflict resolution and communication among engaged couples in selected Catholic churches in Enugu North.

1.3 Research Objectives

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of church‑based pre‑marital counseling on conflict resolution and communication among engaged couples in selected Catholic churches in Enugu North.

The specific objectives are:

1. To determine the level of conflict resolution skills among engaged couples who have undergone church‑based pre‑marital counseling.
2. To assess the level of effective communication among engaged couples following church‑based pre‑marital counseling.
3. To examine the relationship between pre‑marital counseling attendance and conflict resolution abilities.
4. To examine the relationship between pre‑marital counseling attendance and communication effectiveness among engaged couples.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What is the level of conflict resolution skills among engaged couples who have participated in church‑based pre‑marital counseling?
2. What is the level of effective communication among engaged couples after participating in church‑based pre‑marital counseling?
3. What is the relationship between pre‑marital counseling attendance and conflict resolution abilities of engaged couples?
4. What is the relationship between pre‑marital counseling attendance and the communication effectiveness of engaged couples?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant impact of church‑based pre‑marital counseling on conflict resolution and communication among engaged couples in selected Catholic churches in Enugu North.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several ways:

• Church Leadership and Counselors: It will provide empirical evidence to evaluate the effectiveness of current pre‑marital counseling models and inform enhancements where necessary.
• Engaged Couples: Couples preparing for marriage will gain insights into how counseling can strengthen critical relational competencies.
• Family and Social Welfare Practitioners: Findings may inform community‑based family support strategies that integrate spiritual and relational development.
• Academia: The research contributes to literature on religious premarital interventions and relational outcomes, offering localized data from Enugu State.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on engaged couples attending selected Catholic parishes within Enugu North Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria. It examines the influence of church‑based pre‑marital counseling on couples’ conflict resolution and communication skills. The study does not cover civil premarital counseling or counseling undertaken outside the church context.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Church‑Based Pre‑Marital Counseling: A structured program conducted by the Catholic Church to prepare engaged couples for marriage, focusing on spiritual, relational, and practical skills.
• Conflict Resolution: The ability to manage and resolve disagreements constructively without hostility.
• Communication: The process by which couples exchange information, feelings, and needs effectively.
• Engaged Couples: Individuals who have formally agreed to marry and are participating in pre‑marital counseling.
• Catholic Church: The Christian denomination under the authority of the Pope and characterized by sacramental and doctrinal teachings on marriage.
