INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Climate variability has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental and developmental challenges confronting Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where agricultural production remains largely rain-fed and highly sensitive to weather conditions. Climate variability refers to fluctuations in climate parameters such as rainfall, temperature, and extreme weather events over time, which deviate from long-term averages and affect ecological and economic systems (IPCC, 2023). These fluctuations have significant implications for agricultural productivity, food security, rural livelihoods, and overall economic stability.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, agriculture remains the backbone of most economies, employing a large proportion of the population and contributing significantly to GDP. However, the sector is highly vulnerable to climate-related shocks due to dependence on rainfall, low irrigation coverage, and limited access to modern farming technologies (FAO, 2023). Increasing incidences of drought, flooding, heat stress, and unpredictable rainfall patterns have disrupted planting seasons and reduced crop yields across the region.
Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous nation, provides a clear illustration of the intersection between climate variability and agricultural productivity. This study is anchored on the need to empirically examine how climate variability affects agricultural productivity in Nigeria and the extent to which adaptation strategies moderate this relationship within the broader Sub-Saharan African context.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Agricultural productivity in Sub-Saharan Africa has remained persistently low despite its vast arable land and large agricultural workforce. One of the major factors responsible for this trend is climate variability, which has increasingly disrupted farming systems across the region. In Nigeria, farmers face unpredictable rainfall patterns, prolonged dry spells, flooding, and rising temperatures that collectively undermine agricultural output (World Bank, 2024).
The severity of the problem is evident in recurring food production shortages, rising food prices, and increased dependence on food imports. Smallholder farmers, who constitute the majority of agricultural producers, are particularly affected due to their limited capacity to cope with climate shocks. Many rely solely on rain-fed agriculture, making them highly vulnerable to changes in weather patterns.
Although various adaptation strategies have been introduced, their effectiveness remains uncertain. Many farmers lack access to modern technologies such as irrigation systems, weather forecasting information, improved seed varieties, and climate-resilient farming practices. In addition, high costs of inputs and inadequate government support limit the adoption of these strategies. As a result, adaptation efforts have not significantly translated into improved productivity.
Furthermore, there is a growing gap between policy formulation and implementation in addressing climate-related agricultural challenges. While governments and international organizations have promoted climate-smart agriculture, the extent of adoption at the grassroots level remains low. This raises questions about the inclusiveness and sustainability of current adaptation interventions.
Another critical issue is the lack of consistent empirical evidence on how climate variability directly influences agricultural productivity in Nigeria, and the extent to which adaptation strategies mitigate these effects. Many existing studies focus on global or regional analyses, with limited attention to country-specific evidence that reflects local realities and farming systems.
Given the increasing frequency of climate-related shocks and their implications for food security and rural livelihoods, there is a need for a comprehensive empirical investigation into the impact of climate variability and adaptation strategies on agricultural productivity in Nigeria. This study therefore seeks to fill this gap by providing evidence-based insights that can guide policy formulation and agricultural planning.
1.3 Research Questions
The study is guided by the following research questions:
- What is the impact of climate variability on agricultural productivity in Nigeria?
- How effective are adaptation strategies in enhancing agricultural productivity?
- To what extent does climate variability influence the adoption of adaptation strategies among farmers in Nigeria?
1.4 Objective of the Study
The main objective of the study is to examine the impact of climate variability and adaptation strategies on agricultural productivity in Sub-Saharan Africa, with evidence from Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:
- examine the effect of climate variability on agricultural productivity in Nigeria;
- assess the effectiveness of adaptation strategies in improving agricultural output;
- analyze the relationship between climate variability and adoption of adaptation strategies.
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The study is guided by the following null hypothesis:
H₀: Climate variability and adaptation strategies have no significant impact on agricultural productivity in Nigeria.
1.6 Significance of the Study
