INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Contemporary Christian music (CCM) has increasingly become an integral part of worship in churches across the globe, serving not only as a medium for spiritual expression but also as a tool for congregational engagement. In Nigeria, CCM has gained significant prominence, particularly within urban and semi-urban churches where the youth population is vibrant and actively involved in church activities (Ademiluka, 2023). This form of music blends traditional Christian hymns with modern musical styles, including pop, rock, and indigenous rhythms, making it more appealing to younger audiences. Its dynamic nature allows it to communicate spiritual messages in ways that resonate with the experiences, emotions, and cultural contexts of contemporary youth.

In the context of youth ministry, CCM has emerged as a critical instrument for fostering spiritual growth, encouraging active participation, and creating a sense of belonging among young congregants (Ayorinde & Ajose, 2022). Youth ministries in many Nigerian churches increasingly rely on music to structure their programs, outreach activities, and fellowship sessions. By incorporating contemporary rhythms and lyrics that reflect everyday challenges, aspirations, and faith experiences, CCM helps to bridge the generational gap between traditional church practices and modern youth culture (Iroanya, 2025). This integration enhances engagement, fosters a vibrant worship environment, and can positively influence youth retention in church programs.

The Okeagbo 1 Church of Ilogbo Section, situated in the Badagry District, exemplifies this shift in worship practices. Traditionally, worship at the church followed conventional liturgical patterns, emphasizing hymns and choral arrangements inherited from missionary influences. However, recent years have witnessed the gradual adoption of contemporary musical styles within youth programs and worship services. This evolution reflects broader trends in Nigerian Christianity, where churches increasingly adopt CCM to resonate with younger members and address their spiritual and social needs (Ademiluka, 2023).

Moreover, the integration of CCM into youth ministry is not merely a stylistic change but also a strategic approach to evangelism and discipleship. Contemporary Christian music provides a platform for emotional and spiritual expression, creating spaces where youth can interact with faith concepts in relatable and engaging ways. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

In many Nigerian churches, youth ministries are a critical component of church growth and sustainability. The youth represent a significant proportion of the congregation, and their active participation often determines the vibrancy of church programs (Ayorinde & Ajose, 2022). Despite this, there is insufficient evidence on how contemporary music influences their spiritual experiences, commitment, and overall involvement in church activities. Without such insights, church leaders may struggle to design worship programs that effectively meet the spiritual and social needs of young congregants.

Furthermore, the Okeagbo 1 Church of Ilogbo Section in Badagry District presents a unique setting where traditional worship methods coexist with modern musical expressions. Understanding the impact of CCM in this particular context is essential because the local culture, youth demographics, and church leadership style may significantly affect how contemporary music is received and utilized. There is a lack of context-specific research that explores these dynamics in Nigerian churches, especially in semi-urban and rural settings where worship practices are evolving (Iroanya, 2025).

Another challenge is the potential disparity between the intended spiritual goals of CCM and its actual influence on youth behavior and engagement. While CCM is generally believed to inspire spiritual reflection and commitment, questions remain about whether it consistently achieves these outcomes. 1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine Impact of contemporary Christian music on youth ministry in Okeagbo 1 Church of Ilogbo Section, Badagry District. The primary objectives of this study are:

1. To examine the role of CCM in youth ministry at Okeagbo 1 Church of Ilogbo Section.
2. To assess the impact of CCM on the spiritual lives and engagement of youth members.
3. To identify challenges and opportunities associated with integrating CCM into youth ministry.
4. To provide recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of CCM in youth ministry.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

H₀: There is no significant association between youth engagement and the influence of CCM in youth ministry.

H₁: There is a significant association between youth engagement and the influence of CCM in youth ministry.

1.6 Significance of the Study

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the youth ministry of Okeagbo 1 Church of Ilogbo Section in the Badagry District. It examines the use of CCM in worship services, youth fellowships, and other church activities involving young members. The research is limited to the perspectives of youth members, youth leaders, and church officials within this congregation (Iroanya, 2025).

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Contemporary Christian Music (CCM): Refers to modern forms of Christian worship music that blend traditional hymns with contemporary musical styles such as pop, gospel, rock, and indigenous rhythms. In this study, CCM is specifically the type of music used in youth ministry activities at Okeagbo 1 Church of Ilogbo Section.

Youth Ministry: Organized programs, activities, and initiatives within a church aimed at the spiritual growth, social development, and engagement of young members, typically between the ages of 13 and 35. In this research, youth ministry encompasses worship services, fellowships, outreach programs, and other activities involving youth participation.

Spiritual Engagement: The active involvement of youth in religious practices and worship, including participation in prayers, singing, Bible study, and church services. In the context of this study, it measures how CCM encourages youth to be spiritually committed and involved in church activities.

Youth Participation: The extent to which young congregants are involved in church programs, events, and activities. It includes attendance, volunteering, leading worship, and involvement in church decision-making processes.

Retention: The ability of the church to maintain consistent youth membership and active participation over time. This term, in the study, refers to how effectively CCM helps sustain youth involvement in church programs.

Community and Social Cohesion: The sense of belonging, fellowship, and mutual support among youth members in the church. In this research, it relates to how CCM fosters relationships, teamwork, and unity among young congregants.
