Project – Impact of Cooperative Societies on Economic Empowerment of Rural Dwellers in Nigeria: A Study of Selected Multipurpose Cooperatives in Osun State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Cooperative societies have long been recognized as grassroots financial and social institutions that promote collective action, economic participation, and sustainable development among rural populations. In developing countries such as Nigeria, where poverty, unemployment, and limited access to formal financial services remain persistent challenges, cooperative societies serve as an alternative development mechanism that bridges the gap between rural dwellers and formal economic systems.
Globally, cooperatives are acknowledged as important instruments for achieving inclusive development. The International Labour Organization emphasizes that cooperatives contribute significantly to employment creation, financial inclusion, and poverty reduction, particularly among vulnerable groups in rural communities (International Labour Organization, 2022). Similarly, Birchall (2019) argues that cooperative organizations are uniquely positioned to empower members economically due to their democratic structure, shared ownership, and focus on mutual benefit rather than profit maximization.
In Nigeria, the cooperative movement dates back to the colonial era, when agricultural cooperatives were introduced to support cash crop production. Over time, cooperative societies have evolved into multipurpose organizations involved in savings mobilization, credit provision, agricultural support, housing schemes, and small business financing. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria (2023), cooperative societies remain one of the most accessible financial systems for rural dwellers who are often excluded from formal banking due to lack of collateral, documentation, and proximity to financial institutions.
Rural dwellers in Nigeria face numerous socio-economic challenges, including low income levels, poor access to credit facilities, limited employment opportunities, and inadequate infrastructure. These challenges hinder their ability to improve their standard of living and participate meaningfully in economic activities. Cooperative societies therefore play a critical role in addressing these gaps by providing members with access to soft loans, savings platforms, and investment opportunities.
In Osun State, particularly in rural communities, multipurpose cooperative societies such as those in Inisa, Odo-Otin Local Government Area, have become vital tools for economic empowerment. These cooperatives assist members in financing agricultural activities, expanding small-scale businesses, and meeting household financial needs. Through regular savings and rotational credit systems, members are able to access funds that would otherwise be unavailable through conventional banking systems.
Despite these contributions, concerns still exist regarding the effectiveness of cooperative societies in achieving sustainable economic empowerment. Issues such as weak management structures, poor accountability, limited capital base, and inadequate government support often affect their performance. This raises questions about the extent to which cooperative societies truly enhance economic empowerment among rural dwellers in Nigeria.
It is against this background that this study examines the impact of cooperative societies on the economic empowerment of rural dwellers in Nigeria, with particular reference to selected multipurpose cooperative societies in Osun State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the existence and continuous growth of cooperative societies in rural Nigeria, a significant proportion of rural dwellers still experience low economic empowerment. Poverty levels remain high, access to formal credit is limited, and many small-scale businesses struggle to survive due to inadequate funding and poor financial support systems.
Although cooperative societies are expected to serve as alternative financial institutions that provide credit, promote savings, and enhance income generation, there is still uncertainty about how effectively they fulfill these roles in practice. Some members report improved welfare and business growth, while others experience delays in loan disbursement, insufficient loan amounts, and poor cooperative management structures.
Furthermore, empirical evidence on the actual impact of cooperative societies in rural Osun State remains inconsistent. While some studies suggest that cooperatives significantly improve income and living standards, others indicate that their impact is limited due to structural and operational challenges. This inconsistency creates a knowledge gap regarding their true contribution to economic empowerment.
In addition, many rural dwellers remain outside the cooperative system, relying instead on informal lending sources that often charge high interest rates. This raises concerns about whether cooperative societies are sufficiently inclusive and effective in reaching the broader rural population.
Therefore, the central problem of this study is the uncertainty surrounding the actual impact of cooperative societies on the economic empowerment of rural dwellers in Osun State, despite their widespread presence and expected developmental role.
1.3 Objective of the Study
The general objective of this study is to examine the impact of cooperative societies on the economic empowerment of rural dwellers in Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:
- examine the effect of cooperative societies on access to credit facilities among rural dwellers in Osun State;
- assess the contribution of cooperative societies to income generation among members;
- investigate the role of cooperative societies in business and agricultural development;
- determine the extent to which cooperative societies enhance the overall economic empowerment of rural dwellers.
1.4 Research Questions
- What is the effect of cooperative societies on access to credit facilities among rural dwellers?
- How do cooperative societies contribute to income generation among members?
- What role do cooperative societies play in business and agricultural development?
- To what extent do cooperative societies enhance economic empowerment among rural dwellers?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Cooperative societies have no significant impact on the economic empowerment of rural dwellers in Osun State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant to rural dwellers, cooperative members, policymakers, and researchers. For rural dwellers, it provides insight into how cooperative societies can improve their economic wellbeing. For cooperative leaders, it highlights areas of improvement in management and service delivery. For policymakers and government agencies, the study provides evidence-based recommendations for strengthening cooperative institutions as tools for rural development. For researchers, it contributes to existing literature on cooperative economics and rural empowerment in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of cooperative societies on the economic empowerment of rural dwellers in Osun State, with particular reference to selected multipurpose cooperative societies in Odo-Otin Local Government Area. It examines variables such as access to credit, income generation, business development, and overall economic empowerment.
