CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education remains a key instrument for national development, and assessment is a central component in determining the effectiveness of teaching and learning processes. In modern educational systems, assessment practices have evolved from traditional paper-and-pencil examinations to more dynamic and technology-driven approaches. One of such innovations is the Digital Continuous Assessment System (DCAS), which integrates digital tools such as online quizzes, learning management systems, mobile applications, and computer-based testing into continuous assessment practices.
Continuous assessment is generally understood as a systematic and cumulative evaluation of students’ performance over a period of time rather than relying solely on end-of-term or final examinations. According to Black and Wiliam (2021), continuous assessment enhances learning when it is used formatively to provide timely feedback that guides instruction and improves student achievement. In the digital age, this process has been significantly transformed by technology, making assessment faster, more interactive, and data-driven.
The emergence of digital assessment systems has been accelerated by global technological advancement and the need for educational resilience, especially highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. UNESCO (2023) noted that digital learning and assessment tools became essential in maintaining continuity in education during school closures. These systems allow teachers to monitor student progress in real time, automate scoring, and store academic records efficiently.
In Nigeria, the integration of digital tools into education is gradually increasing, especially in urban and semi-urban schools. However, the level of adoption and effectiveness varies across states and school types. While some schools have adopted computer-based testing and online learning platforms, many public secondary schools still rely heavily on manual assessment methods due to infrastructural and capacity challenges (FRN, 2014; Adebayo & Yusuf, 2022).
The independent variable in this study is the Digital Continuous Assessment System, while the dependent variable is students’ academic performance. Academic performance refers to the measurable outcomes of students’ learning, often reflected in test scores, examination results, and overall academic achievement. According to OECD (2023), student performance is strongly influenced by the quality, frequency, and feedback mechanisms of assessment practices.
Digital continuous assessment systems are expected to improve academic performance by promoting frequent evaluation, immediate feedback, personalized learning, and reduced human error in scoring. However, the extent to which these systems actually enhance learning outcomes in Nigerian public secondary schools remains unclear, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Therefore, this study investigates the impact of digital continuous assessment systems on students’ academic performance in selected public secondary schools in FCT, Abuja, with the aim of contributing to policy development and educational improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite increasing global adoption of digital tools in education, the Nigerian secondary school system continues to face challenges in integrating technology into assessment practices. Continuous assessment, which is intended to provide ongoing feedback and improve learning outcomes, is still largely conducted manually in many public secondary schools.
In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, some schools have begun adopting digital platforms for assessment; however, the level of implementation is inconsistent. Many teachers still rely on traditional methods such as handwritten tests and manual record-keeping, which are often time-consuming and prone to errors. This limits the effectiveness of continuous assessment in improving student learning outcomes.
Furthermore, existing studies suggest that inadequate ICT infrastructure, limited teacher training, poor funding, and large class sizes hinder the effective implementation of digital assessment systems in Nigerian schools (Ibrahim & Hassan, 2022; Eze & Uzochukwu, 2023). These challenges raise concerns about whether digital continuous assessment systems are truly impacting students’ academic performance as intended.
Another major concern is the lack of empirical evidence specific to the FCT, Abuja, regarding the effectiveness of digital continuous assessment systems in public secondary schools. While global studies highlight positive outcomes associated with digital assessment, contextual differences such as infrastructure and teacher readiness may influence results in Nigeria.
It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the impact of digital continuous assessment systems on students’ academic performance in selected public secondary schools in FCT, Abuja.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of digital continuous assessment systems on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Nigeria, with a focus on selected states in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- Determine the extent of adoption of digital continuous assessment systems in public secondary schools in FCT, Abuja.
- Identify the types of digital tools used for continuous assessment.
- Examine the impact of digital continuous assessment systems on students’ academic performance.
- Identify the challenges affecting the implementation of digital continuous assessment systems.
1.4 Research Questions
The study is guided by the following research questions:
- What is the extent of adoption of digital continuous assessment systems in public secondary schools in FCT, Abuja?
- What digital tools are commonly used for continuous assessment in public secondary schools?
- What is the impact of digital continuous assessment systems on students’ academic performance?
- What challenges affect the implementation of digital continuous assessment systems in public secondary schools?
1.5 Hypothesis
H₀: There is no significant relationship between digital continuous assessment systems and students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in FCT, Abuja.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between digital continuous assessment systems and students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in FCT, Abuja.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the impact of digital continuous assessment systems on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in selected states within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The study covers teachers and students in selected public secondary schools and examines digital assessment tools such as computer-based tests, online quizzes, and learning management systems. The study is limited to public secondary schools within the FCT and does not include private schools.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be significant to the following groups:
