Project – Impact of Digital Marketing on the Sales Performance of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: A Case Study of Selected Retail Businesses in Abuja.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Research Topic: Impact of Digital Marketing on the Sales Performance of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: A Case Study of Selected Retail Businesses in Abuja
1.1 Background to the Study
Marketing is an essential business function that enables organisations to identify customers’ needs, communicate product benefits, attract buyers, and generate sales. In an increasingly competitive business environment, enterprises must adopt effective marketing strategies to reach potential customers, retain existing ones, and achieve sustainable growth. Traditionally, businesses relied heavily on physical outlets, personal selling, print advertisements, radio, television, and other conventional promotional methods to communicate with their target markets. Although these methods remain useful, technological development has expanded the range of marketing channels available to businesses. Digital marketing enables enterprises to promote their products and services through internet-based platforms, social media, email, search engines, mobile applications, and electronic commerce channels. Chaffey and Ellis-Chadwick (2022) explain that digital marketing involves applying digital technologies and online communication channels to support marketing objectives and build customer relationships. Similarly, Tiago and Veríssimo (2014) demonstrate that digital technologies have changed how organisations communicate with customers and manage marketing activities. Digital marketing has consequently become an important business strategy because it provides opportunities for reaching wider audiences, communicating product information quickly, interacting with customers, and measuring promotional outcomes. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), these opportunities may be particularly valuable because such businesses often operate with limited financial resources and need cost-effective methods of attracting customers and improving sales performance.
Small and medium-sized enterprises play an important role in economic development through employment creation, entrepreneurial development, income generation, innovation, and the provision of goods and services. Retail SMEs are particularly relevant because they connect producers and distributors with final consumers through the sale of products such as clothing, food items, cosmetics, electronics, household goods, and other consumer merchandise. Despite their importance, many small businesses face operational challenges, including limited access to finance, strong competition, inadequate managerial capacity, and difficulties in maintaining a stable customer base. These challenges can make it difficult for retailers to expand their markets or achieve consistent sales growth. Digital marketing offers opportunities to address some of these limitations by enabling businesses to display products online, communicate directly with customers, promote special offers, and receive enquiries without depending entirely on physical visits to their outlets. Taiminen and Karjaluoto (2015) found that digital marketing channels offer SMEs opportunities to improve their marketing activities, although the extent to which businesses exploit these opportunities varies. Wu et al. (2024) also examined digital marketing strategy and SME performance, highlighting the relevance of managerial capabilities, innovativeness, and proactive strategic behaviour to the relationship between digital marketing and business outcomes. These findings suggest that digital marketing can be an important competitive resource for retail SMEs, although its effectiveness depends on how strategically the available channels are selected and used.
Digital marketing encompasses several techniques that may influence sales performance in different ways. Social media marketing enables businesses to promote products, share images and videos, announce discounts, respond to customer enquiries, and maintain communication with consumers through platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp Business. Search engine marketing and search engine optimisation help businesses improve the visibility of their products and online information when potential customers search for relevant goods or services. Email marketing allows businesses to communicate promotional messages, new product information, and special offers to existing and prospective customers, while mobile marketing makes it possible to reach consumers through mobile devices and messaging services. Chaffey and Ellis-Chadwick (2022) identify digital channels as important components of an integrated marketing strategy, particularly when organisations coordinate online communication with wider business objectives. Ilesanmi and Oyedepo (2023), in their study of digital marketing and SME performance in Nigeria, examined social media marketing, email marketing, search engine marketing, mobile marketing, and internet marketing, reporting that these channels collectively had a positive and significant influence on SME performance. This evidence indicates that digital marketing should not be understood as a single activity but as a combination of tools whose contribution to sales may depend on the target audience, product type, promotional content, and consistency of implementation.
Sales performance is a major indicator of the commercial success of retail businesses. It may be assessed through changes in sales volume, sales revenue, customer acquisition, repeat purchases, conversion of enquiries into completed transactions, and the achievement of sales targets. Digital marketing may influence these indicators by increasing product awareness, improving customer access to product information, encouraging customer engagement, and facilitating communication between retailers and buyers. When digital promotional messages reach the appropriate audience and provide relevant information, they may stimulate interest and encourage purchases. However, online visibility does not automatically translate into sales because customers may view advertisements without buying, enquire about products without completing transactions, or abandon purchases because of price, delivery, payment, or trust concerns. Matosas-López (2024) examined whether social media customer engagement could predict operating revenue among SMEs, drawing attention to the relationship between digital interactions and measurable business outcomes. Likewise, Wu et al. (2024) investigated digital marketing strategy and SME performance, emphasising that organisational capabilities and strategic decisions matter in converting digital marketing activities into performance outcomes. Therefore, the impact of digital marketing on sales performance needs to be assessed using business outcomes rather than relying only on the number of online followers, advertisements, likes, or product views.
In Nigeria, digital technologies have created additional opportunities for businesses to communicate with customers and promote goods beyond the immediate surroundings of their physical outlets. Social media platforms and mobile messaging services allow retailers to display merchandise, announce price changes, respond to customer questions, and receive orders through digital channels. These tools can help smaller businesses compete for customers even when they cannot afford extensive traditional advertising campaigns. Nevertheless, the benefits are not automatic. Businesses may encounter high internet and data costs, limited digital marketing skills, inconsistent electricity supply, difficulty producing attractive content, online fraud concerns, and challenges in managing orders and delivering products. Ilesanmi and Oyedepo (2023) reported a positive and significant collective influence of digital marketing channels on SME performance in Nigeria, supporting the importance of examining digital marketing as part of contemporary business practice. Lawal and Adejuwon (2023), in their study of social media marketing and sales performance among selected SMEs in South-West Nigeria, found that aspects of social interaction and content customisation were associated with sales growth, although not all examined social media dimensions were statistically significant. These findings indicate that the effect of digital marketing may vary according to the strategies adopted and the manner in which businesses engage their customers. Further investigation is therefore necessary to understand how digital marketing practices relate specifically to sales performance among retail SMEs operating in Abuja.
Abuja, as Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, provides a relevant setting for examining digital marketing among retail businesses because it contains diverse consumer markets, commercial centres, residential communities, and small enterprises serving customers with different purchasing needs. Retail businesses in areas such as Wuse, Garki, Gwarinpa, Kubwa, and other commercial and residential districts operate in an environment where consumers may compare prices, search for products online, communicate with sellers through mobile devices, and choose between physical and online purchasing options. Digital marketing can help these businesses communicate their product offerings, attract customers from beyond their immediate locations, and maintain relationships with previous buyers. However, retail businesses may differ in their access to digital tools, staff capabilities, promotional budgets, customer preferences, and ability to fulfil orders generated online. The findings of Taiminen and Karjaluoto (2015) show that SMEs differ in their use of digital marketing channels, while Wu et al. (2024) highlight the importance of strategic and managerial capabilities in determining the performance associated with digital marketing. These observations are relevant to selected retail businesses in Abuja because the use of digital platforms alone may not explain differences in sales outcomes. It is important to examine the actual relationship between digital marketing practices and sales performance within the local business context.
Although digital marketing offers several potential benefits, its contribution to the sales performance of small and medium-sized retail businesses cannot be assumed to be uniform or guaranteed. Some businesses may obtain more enquiries, attract new customers, and increase sales after adopting digital promotional strategies, while others may experience limited results because of poor content quality, weak customer engagement, inappropriate platform selection, irregular posting, or an inability to convert online enquiries into purchases. Digital marketing expenditure may also place pressure on businesses with limited resources when promotional activities do not produce measurable returns. Research by Ilesanmi and Oyedepo (2023) provides evidence of a positive relationship between digital marketing channels and SME performance in Nigeria, while Lawal and Adejuwon (2023) demonstrate that the influence of particular social media marketing dimensions on sales performance can differ. These findings establish the importance of examining individual digital marketing practices rather than treating all digital activities as equally effective. Against this background, the present study investigates the impact of digital marketing on the sales performance of small and medium-sized enterprises, using selected retail businesses in Abuja as a case study. The study focuses on social media marketing, email and mobile marketing, search engine optimisation and online advertising, and the sales performance outcomes associated with these practices. It is expected to provide evidence that may help retail business owners make more informed decisions about the use of digital marketing to attract customers and improve sales.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Small and medium-sized retail businesses contribute to employment, entrepreneurship, and the distribution of consumer goods, but their ability to sustain sales growth is often affected by limited marketing resources and intense competition. In a market where customers have access to different sellers and can compare product information and prices through digital platforms, retailers may find it increasingly difficult to attract and retain customers through traditional promotional methods alone. Digital marketing provides an opportunity to improve product visibility, communicate directly with potential buyers, and promote products at different times and locations. However, the adoption of digital marketing does not necessarily guarantee improved sales performance. Some businesses may invest time and money in social media promotion, online advertising, or mobile marketing without achieving corresponding increases in sales revenue or customer purchases. Taiminen and Karjaluoto (2015) observed that SMEs differ in their adoption and use of digital marketing channels, while Chaffey and Ellis-Chadwick (2022) emphasise the importance of aligning digital marketing activities with clearly defined marketing objectives. The problem, therefore, is whether digital marketing practices are translating into measurable sales improvements among selected retail businesses in Abuja.
A further problem concerns the different ways digital marketing channels may influence customers’ purchasing decisions and the sales outcomes of retail businesses. Social media marketing may increase awareness and encourage customer interaction, while email and mobile marketing may help retailers maintain communication with existing customers and promote repeat purchases. Search engine optimisation and online advertising may improve the visibility of products to customers who are actively looking for particular goods. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of these channels may depend on the quality of promotional messages, the suitability of the selected platforms, the characteristics of the target market, and the ability of businesses to respond to customer enquiries. Ilesanmi and Oyedepo (2023) found that several digital marketing channels collectively had a positive and significant influence on SME performance in Nigeria. However, Lawal and Adejuwon (2023) found that the effects of particular social media marketing dimensions on sales growth were not uniform. This creates a need to examine the contribution of specific digital marketing practices to the sales performance of selected retail businesses in Abuja rather than assuming that every digital marketing channel produces the same results.
Another aspect of the problem is the difficulty of converting digital visibility and customer engagement into completed purchases and increased sales revenue. Retail businesses may accumulate followers, receive comments, generate product enquiries, and record substantial online engagement without necessarily achieving a corresponding increase in sales. This may occur when promotional content does not adequately communicate product value, customers lack confidence in online transactions, businesses respond slowly to enquiries, or delivery and payment arrangements discourage purchases. Matosas-López (2024) examined the relationship between social media customer engagement and operating revenue among SMEs, highlighting the importance of connecting digital interactions with measurable business outcomes. Wu et al. (2024) similarly showed that digital marketing strategy and SME performance are related to organisational and managerial capabilities. These studies suggest that the commercial value of digital marketing depends not only on reaching customers but also on the business’s ability to convert attention into purchases. It is therefore necessary to assess digital marketing in relation to sales performance indicators, including sales growth, customer acquisition, repeat purchases, and sales revenue among the selected retail businesses in Abuja.
Despite growing interest in digital marketing among Nigerian businesses, there remains a need for context-specific evidence on how its different dimensions relate to the sales performance of retail SMEs in Abuja. Findings from other locations may not fully reflect the customer preferences, competitive conditions, marketing practices, and operational circumstances of retail businesses within the Federal Capital Territory. Furthermore, businesses may face constraints such as limited digital marketing expertise, advertising costs, unstable internet access, and difficulties measuring the returns from online promotional activities. Although Ilesanmi and Oyedepo (2023) examined digital marketing and SME performance in Nigeria and Lawal and Adejuwon (2023) investigated social media marketing and sales performance in South-West Nigeria, the present study focuses specifically on selected retail businesses in Abuja and examines multiple digital marketing dimensions in relation to sales outcomes. The central problem is to establish whether and how social media marketing, email and mobile marketing, search engine optimisation, and online advertising affect sales performance in the selected businesses. Addressing this problem may provide useful evidence for developing more effective digital marketing strategies and improving the commercial performance of retail SMEs in Abuja.

1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of digital marketing on the sales performance of small and medium-sized enterprises, using selected retail businesses in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria, as its case study.
The content scope covers four main dimensions: social media marketing; email and mobile marketing; search engine optimisation and online advertising; and the relationship between digital marketing practices and sales performance. Sales performance will be considered through indicators such as sales growth, sales revenue, customer acquisition, and repeat purchases.
The geographical scope is limited to selected retail businesses operating in Abuja. The specific businesses and locations will be identified during the research process based on the study’s sampling criteria and access to respondents.
The study will examine digital marketing practices and their relationship with sales performance during the period defined in the methodology. Its conclusions will be based on the evidence obtained from the selected businesses and should not automatically be generalised to all SMEs in Nigeria.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study may encounter certain limitations that could affect the availability and interpretation of data. One possible limitation is the reluctance of some retail business owners or managers to disclose sales information because of commercial confidentiality. Where exact sales figures are unavailable, the researcher may need to rely on appropriate indicators of sales performance, such as reported sales growth, customer acquisition, repeat purchases, and the achievement of sales targets.
Another limitation may arise from differences in the digital marketing capabilities of the selected businesses. Some retailers may use several digital platforms, while others may depend mainly on one social media application or mobile messaging service. These differences may make direct comparisons difficult. In addition, factors such as product quality, pricing, customer service, competitors’ activities, purchasing power, and general economic conditions may influence sales independently of digital marketing. Wu et al. (2024) highlight the relevance of organisational capabilities and strategic decisions to the relationship between digital marketing and SME performance.
The study may also be limited by the number and geographical distribution of retail businesses selected. Findings from the selected businesses may not represent every retail SME operating in Abuja. To minimise these limitations, the researcher will use clearly defined selection criteria, appropriate data collection procedures, and suitable methods of analysis. The limitations will be acknowledged when interpreting the results, and conclusions will be restricted to what the available evidence supports.
