Project – Impact of Digital Marketing Strategies on Small and Medium Enterprises’ Performance in Nigeria. A Study of Selected SMEs in Ogene Zaria, Ofu
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Digital technologies have transformed how businesses operate globally, enabling firms to engage customers, streamline operations, and compete beyond geographical boundaries (Chikandiwa, 2017; Tiago & Veríssimo, 2014). In Nigeria, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) contribute significantly to economic growth, employment generation, and innovation (Akingunola & Fatoki, 2020). However, many Nigerian SMEs still face challenges such as limited access to markets, poor brand visibility, and resource constraints (Eze et al., 2021).
Digital marketing refers to the use of online platforms and technologies — including social media, email marketing, search engines, and websites — to promote products and services (Kumar et al., 2016). Unlike traditional marketing channels, digital marketing allows real-time interaction, targeted reach, and measurable outcomes at relatively lower costs (Chaffey & Ellis‑Chadwick, 2019). For SMEs, digital marketing presents opportunities to overcome infrastructural limitations and connect with wider customer segments within Nigeria and internationally (Hudson & Thal, 2013).
In regions like Ogene Zaria, Ofu Local Government, SMEs operate in a competitive environment where adoption of digital strategies could provide competitive advantages. Yet, despite growing internet penetration and smartphone adoption in Nigeria, many SMEs struggle to integrate digital marketing into their business strategies (Onugu, 2019). Challenges include inadequate digital skills, inconsistent internet access, limited financial resources, and low awareness of digital tools’ potential (Obi & Ogbonna, 2022).
Research has shown that digital marketing can significantly influence business performance by enhancing brand awareness, increasing sales conversion, improving customer engagement, and fostering business resilience (Andzulis et al., 2012; Matar & Kassim, 2014). For Nigerian SMEs, leveraging digital platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp Business, Google My Business, and e‑commerce marketplaces could lead to improved sales performance and market penetration (Ogunnaike & Amune, 2020). However, the extent to which these strategies impact SMEs in localized contexts such as Ogene Zaria, Ofu has not been sufficiently studied, particularly given unique socio‑economic and infrastructural factors affecting rural and semi‑urban enterprises.
This study seeks to fill this gap by examining how digital marketing strategies influence the performance of selected SMEs in Ogene Zaria, Ofu, with the aim of informing policymakers, business owners, and development partners on practical approaches to enhancing SME competitiveness in the digital age.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although digital marketing offers substantial opportunities for SMEs to grow and compete, many enterprises in Nigeria — especially in local communities like Ogene Zaria, Ofu — still rely predominantly on traditional marketing methods such as flyers, word‑of‑mouth, and local signage. These traditional mechanisms often limit customer reach and slow business growth (Eze et al., 2021). Despite increasing access to digital platforms, anecdotal evidence suggests that many SMEs encounter challenges in leveraging digital marketing effectively due to limited knowledge, skill gaps, insufficient capital, and poor infrastructural support (Onugu, 2019; Obi & Ogbonna, 2022).
Existing studies on digital marketing in Nigeria predominantly focus on urban centers or broader national contexts (Akingunola & Fatoki, 2020; Ogunnaike & Amune, 2020), leaving localized environments underexplored. Specifically, there is limited empirical evidence on how digital marketing strategies translate into measurable performance outcomes for SMEs in Ogene Zaria, Ofu. This creates uncertainty among business owners regarding the return on investment in digital marketing and may hinder adoption of effective online promotion tactics.
Therefore, it is imperative to investigate the impact of digital marketing strategies on SME performance in Ogene Zaria, Ofu to understand current adoption levels, barriers, and the extent to which digital initiatives translate into improved sales, customer base growth, and brand recognition.
