CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Drug abuse among adolescents has emerged as a critical social and public health issue globally, with serious consequences for individual development, academic performance, and mental stability. Drug abuse is defined as the excessive or inappropriate use of substances, including alcohol, prescription drugs, and illicit drugs, that alter the normal functioning of the brain and body (National Institute on Drug Abuse [NIDA], 2020). Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to substance abuse due to biological, psychological, and social factors. The period of adolescence is characterized by increased curiosity, risk-taking behavior, peer influence, and experimentation, all of which can heighten the likelihood of engaging in substance abuse (World Health Organization [WHO], 2018).

In Nigeria, studies have shown a growing prevalence of drug abuse among secondary school students, particularly in urban centers like Lagos, where teenagers are exposed to a combination of peer pressure, academic stress, and easy access to psychoactive substances (Okonkwo & Eze, 2021). Drug abuse during adolescence can have far-reaching effects on mental stability, leading to anxiety, depression, irritability, and impaired cognitive functioning. These mental health challenges, in turn, negatively influence academic performance, including reduced attention span, poor memory retention, absenteeism, and low grades (Adewale & Yusuf, 2019).

The problem is particularly pronounced in areas like Kosofe Local Government, Lagos, where socio-economic disparities, parental neglect, and high population density contribute to an environment conducive to drug abuse. Observations from school counselors and preliminary surveys indicate that many teenagers engage in the abuse of substances such as tramadol, codeine, alcohol, marijuana, and other stimulants. This combination of substance abuse and academic pressure threatens both the mental well-being and educational outcomes of adolescents in these communities (Babatunde & Olaniyi, 2020).

Understanding the impact of drug abuse on teenagers’ mental stability and academic performance is crucial for educators, parents, and policymakers. It provides evidence to develop preventive interventions, mental health support programs, and school policies aimed at mitigating substance abuse and promoting healthy adolescent development.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Drug abuse among secondary school students in Kosofe, Lagos, has become a serious concern for educators, parents, and the wider community. Despite government regulations and school-based interventions, reports suggest that students continue to engage in the consumption of psychoactive substances, which adversely affect their mental health and academic outcomes. Teenagers who abuse drugs are more likely to experience mental instability, including anxiety, depression, and behavioral disorders, which impair their learning abilities and academic performance (Okonkwo & Eze, 2021).

Additionally, drug abuse contributes to absenteeism, class disruption, and poor academic engagement. Students may become disinterested in learning, fail examinations, or drop out of school entirely. Peer influence, family dysfunction, socio-economic hardship, and the pressure to cope with academic challenges have been identified as contributing factors. Furthermore, school authorities and parents often lack adequate mechanisms to detect, prevent, or rehabilitate students struggling with substance abuse (Adewale & Yusuf, 2019).

Despite the significance of this problem, there is limited empirical research specifically examining the relationship between drug abuse, mental stability, and academic performance among secondary school students in Kosofe Local Government Area. This study, therefore, seeks to fill this gap by investigating the extent, causes, and consequences of drug abuse among teenagers, focusing on its impact on mental health and learning outcomes.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of drug abuse on teenagers’ mental stability and academic performance in selected secondary schools in Kosofe, Lagos. The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the types of drugs commonly abused by secondary school students in Kosofe.

2. Examine the effects of drug abuse on students’ mental stability.

3. Determine the impact of drug abuse on academic performance.

4. Investigate the socio-economic, family, and peer factors contributing to drug abuse among secondary school students.

1.4 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis at a 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: Drug abuse has no significant impact on teenagers’ mental stability and academic performance in selected secondary schools in Kosofe, Lagos.
H₁: Drug abuse has a significant impact on teenagers’ mental stability and academic performance in selected secondary schools in Kosofe, Lagos.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The study is significant in several ways:

1. Educational Policymakers: The findings will provide evidence to design programs that reduce drug abuse and support students’ mental health and learning outcomes.

2. School Authorities and Counselors: The study will inform interventions targeting at-risk students, including counseling and rehabilitation programs.

3. Parents and Guardians: The research will educate parents on the signs of drug abuse and its effects on teenagers’ mental and academic well-being.

4. Academic Contribution: The study will contribute to existing literature on adolescent drug abuse in Nigeria, particularly in urban secondary schools, and provide a reference for future research.

1.6 Definition of Terms

• Drug Abuse: The misuse of legal or illegal substances that negatively affects mental and physical health (NIDA, 2020).

• Mental Stability: A state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an individual can cope with stress, maintain focus, and function effectively in daily life (WHO, 2018).

• Academic Performance: The measurable educational outcomes of students, often assessed through grades, examination results, and class participation.

• Teenagers/Adolescents: Individuals aged between 13 and 19 years, who are in the developmental stage between childhood and adulthood.

• Secondary Schools: Educational institutions providing junior and senior secondary education to students, typically between ages 12 and 18.
