INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

Entrepreneurial education has garnered significant attention as a pivotal component of modern educational curricula worldwide. Scholars argue that entrepreneurial education equips individuals with skills that enhance their capacity to create opportunities for themselves and others. Specifically, in developing regions like Lagos State, Nigeria, the importance of entrepreneurship education for enhancing youth employability cannot be overstated. According to Abubakar et al. (2020), entrepreneurial education can help mitigate the challenges of youth unemployment by fostering self-reliance, business acumen, and innovative thinking. The demand for a well-educated workforce in terms of entrepreneurial skills has prompted both governmental and non-governmental stakeholders to focus on integrating entrepreneurship into formal and informal education systems across Lagos.

The link between entrepreneurial education and employability is central to debates about workforce readiness in sub-Saharan Africa, where youth unemployment rates remain alarmingly high. Research suggests that entrepreneurial education, by instilling critical thinking, problem-solving, and risk-taking abilities, provides youth with a competitive edge in the labor market (Akande, 2019). In Lagos, where the informal sector is a dominant employer, young people with entrepreneurial training are better equipped to navigate the complexities of the marketplace. Oke et al. (2021) assert that youth who are trained in entrepreneurial skills tend to be more adaptable, demonstrating resilience in an economy prone to economic shifts and unemployment crises.

Furthermore, various studies have illustrated that entrepreneurial education positively influences youth engagement in self-employment ventures. A notable study by Ezeani (2020) revealed that a significant proportion of Nigerian youths who participated in entrepreneurial training programs were able to launch small-scale businesses, contributing to economic growth in their communities. Lagos State, as a commercial hub, offers a unique environment for such ventures, with its burgeoning middle class and a growing number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The skills gained from entrepreneurial education enable youth to tap into these opportunities, improving their chances of gaining meaningful employment or establishing businesses that create jobs for others.

In contrast, there are critiques that question the depth and effectiveness of entrepreneurial education in the Nigerian context. Some argue that while entrepreneurial education is promoted, its impact is limited by factors such as inadequate infrastructure, poor curriculum design, and a lack of access to funding and mentorship opportunities (Ogunyemi, 2020). In Lagos, though the state government and various NGOs have initiated programs aimed at increasing youth entrepreneurship, the lack of tangible support systems and resources often leaves many young entrepreneurs struggling to turn their ideas into sustainable businesses. Moreover, as noted by Adebayo and Sulaimon (2021), the current structure of entrepreneurial education may be more focused on theoretical concepts rather than practical, hands-on training, which reduces its effectiveness in enhancing employability.

Despite these limitations, the role of entrepreneurial education in shaping employability is seen as a critical pathway to addressing the region’s unemployment crisis. Studies indicate that well-structured entrepreneurial education, when supported by government policies, can lead to significant changes in youth employability outcomes. For example, Akinyemi (2022) highlights the success of programs like the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), which provides access to financial support, training, and mentorship to young entrepreneurs. The integration of practical learning, funding, and mentoring has been shown to improve business survival rates and the ability of youths to transition from education to employment in the labor market.

In conclusion, while there are challenges in fully realizing the potential of entrepreneurial education in Lagos State, the existing body of research suggests that its impact on youth employability is profound. By equipping young people with the necessary skills to start and sustain businesses, entrepreneurial education fosters economic independence and resilience. However, for these initiatives to truly enhance employability, there must be continued emphasis on improving the quality of entrepreneurial education, expanding support systems, and aligning the curriculum with the needs of the evolving job market. As Lagos continues to develop as an economic powerhouse, it will be crucial to scale up efforts that ensure young people are well-prepared to thrive in both the formal and informal sectors of the economy.

• Statement of the Problem

Youth unemployment remains one of the most pressing socio-economic challenges in Lagos State, Nigeria. Despite the state’s rapid urbanization and growth as a commercial hub, a significant proportion of young people in Lagos face difficulties in securing stable employment. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (2022), Nigeria’s youth unemployment rate has been persistently high, with Lagos, despite being the economic powerhouse, exhibiting similar trends. This situation is compounded by the growing population of young individuals, inadequate job creation, and skills mismatch, creating a vicious cycle of poverty and underemployment. Consequently, there is an urgent need for innovative approaches to address these issues, with entrepreneurial education emerging as a potential solution.

Entrepreneurial education has been recognized as a key driver for economic empowerment and youth employability. It is believed that equipping young people with entrepreneurial skills not only fosters self-reliance but also enhances their ability to create jobs and contribute to the economy. However, while numerous programs promoting entrepreneurship have been launched in Lagos, the actual impact of these educational initiatives on youth employability remains unclear. There is a gap in the literature regarding the effectiveness of these programs in addressing the skills gap and preparing young people for the challenges of the labor market in the context of Lagos State. Many existing studies focus on the theoretical underpinnings of entrepreneurial education, but there is limited empirical research evaluating its practical outcomes in improving youth employment rates.

One of the key challenges in assessing the impact of entrepreneurial education is the lack of a cohesive framework that links these educational programs with measurable outcomes in youth employment. In Lagos, several government and private sector-led initiatives, such as the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) and other entrepreneurial training schemes, claim to equip young people with the skills required to thrive in the marketplace. However, despite these interventions, there is limited data to suggest a significant reduction in unemployment rates among educated youth in Lagos. This raises concerns about whether these programs are effectively addressing the specific needs of the youth population or whether they are being implemented in ways that fail to create lasting impacts on employability.

Furthermore, another critical issue is the disconnect between the skills taught in entrepreneurial education programs and the actual requirements of the labor market. Lagos, as a rapidly growing city with a diverse economy, presents both opportunities and challenges for youth entrepreneurship. However, many entrepreneurial education programs in the state focus primarily on theoretical knowledge rather than practical skills, which may leave young people ill-prepared to deal with real-world challenges. This discrepancy between what is taught and what is needed in the job market suggests that the entrepreneurial education provided may not be sufficiently tailored to the local economic context or to the specific needs of young people in Lagos.

Moreover, while Lagos State has made considerable efforts to promote entrepreneurship among its youth, challenges such as limited access to capital, mentorship, and networking opportunities continue to hinder the success of young entrepreneurs. Even if entrepreneurial education succeeds in providing foundational business knowledge, without appropriate support structures, young people may struggle to convert these skills into viable businesses. The lack of a comprehensive support system that includes access to financial resources, mentoring, and networking significantly limits the potential for entrepreneurial education to foster sustainable job creation. These gaps in the support system must be addressed if entrepreneurial education is to have a meaningful impact on youth employability.

Furthermore, while entrepreneurial education has the potential to significantly enhance youth employability in Lagos, there are considerable gaps in its implementation, content, and support structures that limit its effectiveness. It is crucial to examine the existing programs and identify the factors that inhibit their success in improving youth employment outcomes. This study seeks to investigate the impact of entrepreneurial education on youth employability in Lagos State, with a particular focus on the alignment between educational content and labor market demands, the support structures available to young entrepreneurs, and the overall effectiveness of these programs in facilitating employment opportunities for youth.

1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine the impact of Entrepreneurial Education on Youth Employability in Lagos State. The specific objectives are:

1. To assess the level of entrepreneurial education programs available to youth in Lagos State.
2. To determine the perceived impact of entrepreneurial education on the employability skills of youth in Lagos State.
3. To identify the key challenges faced by youth in accessing and participating in entrepreneurial education programs in Lagos State.
4. To examine the relationship between entrepreneurial education and youth employment rates in Lagos State.

The research questions are buttressed below:

1. What is the availability and accessibility of entrepreneurial education programs for youth in Lagos State?
2. How do youth in Lagos State perceive the impact of entrepreneurial education on their employability skills?
3. What are the main obstacles that prevent youth from accessing and participating in entrepreneurial education programs in Lagos State?
4. Is there a significant correlation between entrepreneurial education and youth employment rates in Lagos State?

1.5. Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: Entrepreneurial education has no effect on the employability skills of youth in Lagos State.

H1: Entrepreneurial education has effect on the employability skills of youth in Lagos State.

1.6.  Significance of the Study

This study is significant in addressing one of the most pressing issues facing Lagos State—youth unemployment. Youth unemployment in Nigeria is at a crisis level, with Lagos, despite its economic prominence, struggling to provide sufficient employment opportunities for its growing youth population. By focusing on the impact of entrepreneurial education on youth employability, this research aims to provide crucial insights into how educational initiatives can serve as a catalyst for economic empowerment. The findings from this study could inform policymakers and educational institutions on how to better align entrepreneurial education with the demands of the labor market, potentially leading to a more dynamic and resilient workforce in Lagos.

The study’s significance also lies in its potential to guide the development and refinement of entrepreneurial education programs. Although various government and private sector initiatives have been launched in Lagos to promote entrepreneurship, there is a gap in the literature regarding their real-world impact on employability. By evaluating the effectiveness of these programs, this research will provide evidence-based recommendations on how entrepreneurial education can be restructured or enhanced to better serve the needs of the youth. These insights could contribute to more targeted and impactful educational policies that foster practical, job-relevant skills among young people, thereby increasing their chances of successful employment or self-employment.

Additionally, this study is important for understanding the broader economic implications of entrepreneurial education. In a rapidly urbanizing city like Lagos, where the informal sector plays a significant role in economic activities, fostering a culture of entrepreneurship among the youth can stimulate job creation and economic growth. By equipping young people with the skills needed to establish and sustain businesses, entrepreneurial education can contribute to reducing the unemployment rate while simultaneously addressing the challenges of underemployment and informal sector growth. The findings of this research could, therefore, have long-term implications for Lagos’ economy, helping to unlock the untapped entrepreneurial potential of its youth population.

The research is also significant for its potential to contribute to the academic discourse on youth entrepreneurship in developing countries. While a wealth of studies exist on the role of entrepreneurial education in enhancing employability, much of the existing literature focuses on Western contexts. This study will fill a gap in the literature by providing an African perspective on the topic, particularly in the context of Lagos State, which presents a unique socio-economic landscape. By focusing on the specific challenges and opportunities within Lagos, this study will add valuable insights into how entrepreneurial education can be adapted to meet the needs of young people in different economic and cultural settings.

Another key significance of this study is its potential to influence the broader policy environment in Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole. Policymakers often face challenges when designing educational interventions that address youth unemployment. This study could provide data-driven insights into the strengths and weaknesses of existing programs, enabling policymakers to make informed decisions about the future of youth entrepreneurship initiatives. By identifying the factors that contribute to the success or failure of these programs, the study could advocate for more effective policies that foster entrepreneurial thinking and create a supportive ecosystem for young entrepreneurs.

Finally, the study’s findings will be valuable to young people themselves, providing them with information on the benefits and challenges of pursuing entrepreneurship as a career option. As youth unemployment continues to rise in Lagos, understanding the potential of entrepreneurial education as a pathway to employment can help young people make more informed decisions about their future career trajectories. The research could inspire more youth to pursue entrepreneurship, not just as a means of self-employment, but as a way to contribute to the economy and community development. In doing so, the study can empower youth to take charge of their futures and become active participants in shaping the economic landscape of Lagos State.

1.7. Scope of the Study

The study examines the impact of Entrepreneurial Education on Youth Employability in Lagos State. The stud is limited to young people in Ikorodu, LGA, Lagos.

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Impact: The significant effect or influence something has on a person, group, community, or system. It’s often used to measure the outcomes or results of a particular action, program, or intervention.

Entrepreneurial Education: A type of education designed to teach individuals the skills, knowledge, and mindset necessary to start, run, and manage a business. This can include understanding the basics of business management, innovation, leadership, risk-taking, and problem-solving.

Youth: Generally refers to the period of life between childhood and adulthood, often seen as ages 13 to 24, though it can vary depending on the context. It’s a phase marked by personal development, growth, and often the transition into independent roles in society.

Employability: The ability of an individual to gain and maintain employment. It includes having the right skills, knowledge, attitudes, and qualifications that are valued in the labor market. Employability also refers to the capacity to adapt to changes in the work environment or economy.
