Project – Impact of Environmental Awareness Education on Students’ Attitudes Toward Biodiversity Conservation in Secondary Schools in Ibadan
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The environment provides the essential resources that sustain human existence, including air, water, soil, and biodiversity. Biodiversity refers to the variety and variability of life on Earth, encompassing the diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystems (UNESCO, 2020). It is vital for ecological balance, food security, medicine, and overall well-being. However, increasing human activities such as deforestation, pollution, urbanization, and industrialization have led to the loss of biodiversity at alarming rates (United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP], 2021). The degradation of ecosystems and extinction of species threaten the sustainability of life on Earth.
Education has been recognized globally as a critical tool for addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development. Environmental awareness education aims to equip learners with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary for responsible interaction with the environment (Ogunbiyi, 2019). In the context of secondary education, environmental awareness helps students understand the importance of biodiversity conservation and encourages them to adopt behaviors that support environmental protection (Ajayi, 2021).
In Nigeria, and particularly in urban centers like Ibadan, biodiversity loss is evident due to rapid urbanization, poor waste management, bush burning, and indiscriminate deforestation (Afolabi & Akintola, 2020). Despite the inclusion of environmental education themes in the national curriculum through subjects such as Biology, Agricultural Science, and Social Studies, many students still display low environmental consciousness and poor attitudes toward biodiversity conservation (Okebukola, 2017). This gap may be attributed to inadequate emphasis on environmental education in schools, lack of trained teachers, and limited exposure to outdoor environmental learning experiences (Aina, 2022).
When effectively implemented, environmental awareness education can influence students’ cognitive understanding of environmental issues and their affective attitudes toward biodiversity preservation (Ezeudu & Chukwu, 2018). Students exposed to participatory and inquiry-based environmental programs are more likely to develop positive environmental attitudes and engage in conservation practices such as tree planting, waste recycling, and sustainable resource use (Obasoro & Adegboye, 2021). Therefore, there is a need to investigate the extent to which environmental awareness education influences students’ attitudes toward biodiversity conservation in secondary schools in Ibadan.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Biodiversity conservation has become a global priority due to the rapid decline in species diversity caused by human activities. In Nigeria, the situation is worsened by inadequate public awareness and weak environmental education implementation. Observations in many secondary schools in Ibadan reveal that environmental awareness programs are often treated superficially, with limited practical activities such as field excursions or conservation clubs (Aina, 2022). Students’ knowledge of biodiversity concepts is shallow, and their attitudes toward conservation practices are often negative or indifferent.
Despite the Nigerian National Policy on the Environment (Revised, 2016) emphasizing environmental education at all levels of schooling, there is little evidence that such education has translated into behavioral change among students. Teachers, in many cases, lack the pedagogical tools or materials needed to teach environmental concepts effectively. Consequently, the younger generation may grow up without a proper sense of environmental responsibility or appreciation of biodiversity.
This study, therefore, seeks to examine the impact of environmental awareness education on students’ attitudes toward biodiversity conservation in secondary schools in Ibadan. The findings will provide insights into how effectively environmental education is fostering positive conservation attitudes among students.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of environmental awareness education on students’ attitudes toward biodiversity conservation in secondary schools in Ibadan.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
-
Assess students’ level of awareness of environmental issues and biodiversity conservation.
-
Determine the influence of environmental awareness education on students’ attitudes toward biodiversity conservation.
-
Identify the challenges affecting the implementation of environmental awareness education in secondary schools in Ibadan.
-
Suggest strategies to strengthen environmental education for effective biodiversity conservation awareness.
1.4 Research Questions
The study will be guided by the following research questions:
-
What is the level of environmental awareness among secondary school students in Ibadan?
-
How does environmental awareness education influence students’ attitudes toward biodiversity conservation?
-
What challenges affect the effective implementation of environmental awareness education in Ibadan secondary schools?
-
What strategies can improve environmental awareness and biodiversity conservation education in secondary schools?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
To guide the study, the following hypothesis is formulated and will be tested:
H₀: Environmental awareness education has no significant impact on students’ attitudes toward biodiversity conservation in secondary schools in Ibadan.
H₁: Environmental awareness education has a significant impact on students’ attitudes toward biodiversity conservation in secondary schools in Ibadan.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be significant to several stakeholders. For students, it will help in enhancing their understanding of the environment and promote positive attitudes toward biodiversity conservation. For teachers, the findings will provide insight into effective methods for integrating environmental awareness into classroom teaching. School administratorsand curriculum planners will benefit by identifying areas where environmental education programs need reinforcement. Government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can use the findings to design awareness campaigns and training programs for teachers. Finally, the study contributes to the broader goal of sustainable development by fostering environmentally responsible behaviors among future generations.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on public secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. It covers senior secondary school students (SSS I–III) and their teachers. The study is limited to assessing the level of environmental awareness education, students’ attitudes toward biodiversity conservation, and the factors influencing these attitudes.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
-
Environmental Awareness Education: The process of imparting knowledge, skills, and values related to environmental protection and sustainable resource management.
-
Biodiversity Conservation: Efforts aimed at preserving the variety of living organisms and their habitats to maintain ecological balance.
-
Attitude: The predisposition or tendency of students to respond positively or negatively toward biodiversity conservation.
-
Secondary School Students: Learners enrolled in the senior secondary level (SSS I–III) within Ibadan.
