INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Church growth is a central concern for religious organizations worldwide. It encompasses both the numerical increase of congregants and the spiritual development of members within the church community. Effective church growth strategies involve multiple dimensions, including evangelism, discipleship, member retention, pastoral care, and follow-up programs. Among these, follow-up has emerged as a vital aspect of sustaining church growth because it ensures that new converts and existing members remain actively engaged in the spiritual and social life of the church (McGavran, 1990).

Follow-up in the church context refers to the deliberate process of nurturing, mentoring, and providing continuous support to church members, especially new converts. It is aimed at integrating individuals into the church community, deepening their understanding of faith, encouraging regular participation in church activities, and fostering personal and spiritual development (Okeke, 2014). Follow-up can take many forms, including pastoral counseling, home visits, spiritual mentorship programs, small group activities, and regular communication with church members.

The importance of follow-up in church growth cannot be overstated. Studies have shown that churches that implement systematic follow-up strategies tend to experience higher retention rates among new converts and stronger spiritual maturity among members. New converts often face challenges in adapting to a new spiritual lifestyle and integrating into the church community. Without effective follow-up, these individuals may become disinterested, disengaged, or even leave the church entirely (McGavran & Arn, 2006).

In Nigeria, the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) is one of the prominent denominations committed to evangelism, discipleship, and church growth. The ECWA Church has established various programs and strategies to promote spiritual growth and increase membership across the country. One of the ECWA local churches in Kogi State is ECWA Church, Ogene Zaria, located in Ofu Local Government Area. This church, like many others, has continually focused on follow-up initiatives to strengthen members’ faith, encourage active participation in church activities, and foster overall church growth.

Follow-up activities in ECWA Church, Ogene Zaria, include home visitation programs, mentoring sessions for new converts, prayer groups, regular counseling, and discipleship training. These activities are intended to build a strong sense of community, promote spiritual development, and ensure that members remain committed to the church’s mission. Effective follow-up not only enhances the spiritual life of members but also contributes to increased attendance, engagement, and membership growth within the church (Okeke, 2014).

Despite the recognized importance of follow-up in promoting church growth, many local churches in Nigeria face challenges in implementing effective follow-up strategies. Some challenges include inadequate personnel for follow-up, lack of systematic plans, limited resources, and insufficient training for church leaders. These challenges can reduce the effectiveness of follow-up initiatives and limit the church’s capacity to retain members and sustain growth.

In ECWA Church, Ogene Zaria, follow-up has been a crucial component of the church’s growth strategy. However, there is a need to examine empirically how follow-up impacts church growth, particularly in the context of the Ofu Local Government Area. Understanding the relationship between follow-up and church growth will provide insights into how churches can enhance their retention strategies, improve discipleship, and strengthen overall church development.

This study, therefore, seeks to investigate the impact of follow-up on church growth, using ECWA Church, Ogene Zaria, Ofu LGA, Kogi State, as a case study. The research aims to identify the methods of follow-up used, examine their effectiveness in fostering spiritual and numerical growth, and determine the challenges affecting follow-up programs in the church.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Church growth remains a key priority for religious organizations, but many churches struggle to retain new converts and encourage active participation among members. One of the major challenges faced by churches is the lack of effective follow-up programs for members, especially new converts. Without proper follow-up, individuals who join the church may fail to integrate fully into the church community, leading to low retention rates and limited spiritual growth (McGavran & Arn, 2006).

ECWA Church, Ogene Zaria, like many local churches in Nigeria, has implemented follow-up programs to address these challenges. These programs aim to provide spiritual guidance, mentorship, counseling, and support to church members. However, there is limited empirical research on the extent to which these follow-up programs influence church growth in terms of both membership retention and spiritual development.

Some observed challenges include inadequate personnel to conduct follow-up visits, lack of systematic follow-up strategies, limited engagement with members, and insufficient monitoring of the progress of new converts. These challenges may result in a weak follow-up system, which can hinder the growth and sustainability of the church. Additionally, there is often little documented evidence showing the effectiveness of existing follow-up methods in fostering church growth.

The problem, therefore, is the uncertainty surrounding the effectiveness of follow-up in promoting church growth at ECWA Church, Ogene Zaria, Ofu LGA, Kogi State. This study seeks to investigate how follow-up programs contribute to the growth of the church and to identify the challenges that limit their effectiveness.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of follow-up on church growth in ECWA Church, Ogene Zaria, Ofu LGA, Kogi State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the follow-up strategies employed by ECWA Church, Ogene Zaria.

2. Assess the effectiveness of follow-up programs in fostering membership retention and spiritual growth.

3. Examine the challenges affecting the implementation of follow-up initiatives in the church.

4. Suggest measures to enhance the effectiveness of follow-up programs for church growth.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Follow-up has no significant impact on church growth in ECWA Church, Ogene Zaria, Ofu LGA, Kogi State.

H₁: Follow-up has a significant impact on church growth in ECWA Church, Ogene Zaria, Ofu LGA, Kogi State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to church leaders and pastors by providing insights into how follow-up strategies contribute to church growth. It will help leaders understand the importance of continuous mentorship, counseling, and engagement of members to enhance church development.

The study will also benefit church members by highlighting the role of follow-up in promoting spiritual growth, integration into the church community, and increased participation in church activities.

Additionally, this research will contribute to academic literature in the field of religious studies, church management, and organizational growth, providing a reference for future studies on church growth and follow-up programs.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the impact of follow-up on church growth at ECWA Church, Ogene Zaria, located in Ofu Local Government Area, Kogi State. The research will examine the follow-up strategies used by the church, their effectiveness, and the challenges faced in implementing follow-up initiatives.
