CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Culture plays a central role in shaping social norms, values, and practices within communities. Among the Igala people of Kogi State, Ibegwu culture is a prominent traditional belief system that involves the veneration of ancestors. Ibegwu is believed to regulate moral behavior, social conduct, and marital relationships, functioning as both a spiritual and social authority in Igala society (Ojo, 2010). Within the context of marriage, Ibegwu is considered a mechanism for ensuring fidelity, respect, and proper conduct between spouses. Ancestors are believed to monitor marital relationships and punish transgressions, thereby influencing marital stability and decision-making (Adebayo, 2014).

Marriage in Igala culture is not only a personal union but a social contract involving families and the wider community. Cultural practices, rites, and traditional norms significantly affect the conduct and success of marriages. The Ibegwu system, in particular, enforces marital obligations and responsibilities through rituals, taboos, and moral sanctions. Couples are expected to honor ancestral injunctions, uphold marital fidelity, and seek reconciliation through culturally sanctioned procedures when disputes arise (Ukah, 2016).

Despite the cultural significance of Ibegwu, modern influences such as Christianity, Islam, Western education, and globalization have altered traditional perceptions of marriage. Younger generations may challenge or reinterpret Ibegwu norms, leading to potential conflicts or hybrid practices in marital life. In Ofu Local Government Area, particularly in communities like Ogene Zaria, these dynamics are evident, as couples navigate the tension between traditional cultural expectations and contemporary marital practices (Adogame, 2013).

Research has shown that Ibegwu culture can both strengthen and complicate marital relationships. On one hand, adherence to ancestral guidelines may promote marital harmony, fidelity, and mutual respect. On the other hand, strict enforcement of Ibegwu taboos and beliefs can create tension, especially when one or both spouses prioritize modern or religious perspectives over traditional norms (Asamoah-Gyadu, 2018). This dual impact raises questions about the overall effect of Ibegwu culture on the quality and stability of Igala marriages.

This study focuses on the community of Ogene Zaria in Ofu Local Government Area, a location known for strong adherence to Igala cultural practices. The research examines how Ibegwu culture influences marital behavior, decision-making, conflict resolution, and overall marital satisfaction, providing insights into the intersection of tradition and modernity in contemporary Igala society.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Marriage is a fundamental social institution that is heavily influenced by cultural beliefs and practices. In Igala society, the Ibegwu system serves as a guiding framework for marital conduct. However, there is growing evidence that Ibegwu culture can be both beneficial and problematic for marital life. While some couples report increased respect, fidelity, and harmonious relationships as a result of adherence to Ibegwu norms, others experience tension, fear, and conflict, particularly when traditional expectations clash with modern beliefs or religious practices (Ojo, 2010).

Challenges associated with Ibegwu culture include strict enforcement of taboos, perceived ancestral punishment for marital transgressions, and pressure to conform to extended family expectations. Such pressures can sometimes lead to marital discord, emotional stress, or even separation (Adebayo, 2014). In addition, there is limited empirical research quantifying or explaining the extent to which Ibegwu beliefs influence contemporary Igala marriage life. This gap in knowledge makes it difficult for policymakers, marriage counselors, and community leaders to address marital issues effectively while respecting cultural heritage.

The study therefore seeks to answer the central question: To what extent does Ibegwu culture impact the quality, stability, and satisfaction of Igala marriages in Ogene Zaria, Ofu LGA? Understanding this impact is essential for developing culturally sensitive interventions that support marital harmony while respecting traditional values.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The study seeks to achieve the following objectives:

1. To examine the influence of Ibegwu cultural beliefs on marital behavior among Igala couples in Ogene Zaria.

2. To assess the impact of Ibegwu culture on marital stability and conflict resolution.

3. To identify challenges associated with adherence to Ibegwu norms in modern Igala marriages.

4. To recommend strategies for harmonizing Ibegwu cultural practices with contemporary marital expectations.

1.4 Research Questions

The study is guided by the following research questions:

1. How do Ibegwu cultural beliefs influence marital behavior among Igala couples in Ogene Zaria?

2. What is the impact of Ibegwu culture on marital stability and conflict resolution?

3. What challenges do couples face in adhering to Ibegwu norms in contemporary marriage?

4. What strategies can be adopted to harmonize Ibegwu culture with modern marital practices?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis at a 5% level of significance:

• H₀: Ibegwu culture has no significant impact on the quality and stability of Igala marriages in Ogene Zaria, Ofu LGA.

• H1: Ibegwu culture has a significant impact on the quality and stability of Igala marriages in Ogene Zaria, Ofu LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant in several ways:

1. Couples and Families: Provides insights into how traditional cultural beliefs affect marital behavior, guiding couples toward culturally informed and harmonious relationships.

2. Community Leaders and Elders: Assists in mediating conflicts and developing culturally sensitive counseling frameworks for marriages.

3. Academia: Contributes to the literature on African cultural practices, marriage studies, and the intersection of tradition and modernity in Igala society.

4. Policy Makers and Marriage Counselors: Offers empirical evidence to support culturally responsive interventions for enhancing marital stability and satisfaction.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the impact of Ibegwu culture on Igala marriage life in Ogene Zaria, Ofu Local Government Area, Kogi State. It examines cultural practices, marital behavior, conflict resolution, and perceived marital satisfaction among married couples. The study considers both male and female perspectives to provide a comprehensive understanding of the influence of Ibegwu norms. The study is limited to married individuals who have been in unions for at least two years to ensure sufficient exposure to cultural marital practices.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Ibegwu Culture: The traditional Igala belief system of ancestor veneration, which regulates moral behavior, social conduct, and marital relationships (Ojo, 2010).

• Marriage Life: The overall quality, stability, and satisfaction experienced in a marital union.

• Marital Stability: The ability of a marriage to withstand challenges and maintain harmony and commitment between spouses.

• Marital Satisfaction: The perception of contentment and fulfillment experienced by partners in a marriage.

• Igala People: An ethnic group predominantly found in Kogi State, Nigeria, with unique cultural and traditional practices.
