INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Church growth is a multidimensional phenomenon influenced by theological, social, and organizational factors. Over the past decades, scholars have recognized that the welfare of church members plays a critical role in determining the vitality, expansion, and overall sustainability of congregations (Ojo, 2017). Members’ welfare encompasses both spiritual and material well-being, including pastoral care, social support, provision of basic needs, education, health assistance, and opportunities for participation in church activities (Akinade, 2020). When churches effectively address members’ welfare, they foster loyalty, commitment, and active participation, which in turn stimulates growth.

In the Nigerian context, the role of welfare in church growth has gained increasing attention. Churches have evolved from being purely spiritual institutions to organizations that address the social and economic needs of their members (Idowu & Adebayo, 2018). For example, churches often provide scholarships, organize medical outreach programs, and assist members in crisis situations. Such welfare-oriented initiatives can enhance members’ satisfaction and retention, creating a strong sense of belonging and communal identity (Eze & Onwuegbu, 2019).

Abuja, as the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, has experienced rapid urbanization and migration, which has led to the proliferation of diverse religious groups and denominations (Adejumo, 2021). In this competitive religious landscape, churches must adopt strategies that retain members and attract new ones. Member welfare programs, therefore, become crucial tools for churches seeking to sustain growth, as they influence members’ perception of the church as not only a spiritual home but also a supportive community (Nwachukwu, 2020).

Despite the growing interest in church growth strategies, limited empirical studies have specifically examined the direct impact of members’ welfare on church growth in Abuja. Understanding this relationship is essential because it provides insights into how churches can balance spiritual missions with practical support mechanisms to foster growth in membership, attendance, and engagement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Churches in Abuja face the dual challenge of spiritual nourishment and addressing the socio-economic needs of their congregants. While many churches provide spiritual guidance, a lack of structured welfare programs can negatively affect members’ commitment, attendance, and contribution to church activities (Olagunju, 2019). Some members may feel neglected or unsupported, resulting in decreased participation, high turnover, or migration to churches that offer better welfare services.

Additionally, churches often struggle with identifying the most impactful welfare interventions that correlate directly with growth. While anecdotal evidence suggests that welfare initiatives such as health outreach, financial assistance, and educational support improve members’ satisfaction, there is limited empirical data demonstrating a clear causal link between specific welfare programs and measurable church growth in Abuja (Onyeka, 2020). Without this evidence, church leaders may underinvest in welfare activities or adopt ineffective programs, potentially stalling congregational growth.

This gap necessitates a systematic study to investigate how members’ welfare initiatives influence church growth. Understanding this relationship can guide church management, policymakers, and religious organizations in implementing welfare strategies that effectively foster growth while enhancing members’ well-being.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of members’ welfare on church growth in Abuja. The specific objectives are:

1. To identify the types of welfare programs provided by selected churches in Abuja.

2. To assess the relationship between members’ welfare and church attendance.

3. To evaluate the impact of members’ welfare on members’ retention and loyalty.

4. To examine how members’ welfare initiatives influence overall church growth in terms of membership expansion and active participation.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What types of welfare programs are provided by the selected churches in Abuja?

2. How does members’ welfare influence church attendance?

3. What is the relationship between members’ welfare and members’ retention or loyalty?

4. To what extent do members’ welfare programs contribute to overall church growth?

1.5 Hypothesis of the Study

H₀: Members’ welfare has no significant impact on church growth in selected churches in Abuja.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several ways. First, it provides empirical insights for church leaders and administrators, helping them understand the importance of welfare programs in fostering church growth. Second, it contributes to the academic discourse on church management and organizational development within religious institutions. Third, policymakers, religious associations, and NGOs can leverage the findings to design programs that support congregational development. Finally, the study provides a framework for future research on welfare and growth dynamics in other religious settings in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on five selected churches in Abuja, representing different denominations. The research examines welfare initiatives such as financial support, health services, educational programs, and spiritual care, and their influence on church growth indicators, including membership increase, attendance, and active participation. The study is limited to Abuja due to its diverse religious population and the concentration of churches implementing structured welfare programs.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Members’ Welfare: Refers to the various social, spiritual, and material support services provided by a church to ensure the well-being of its congregants.

• Church Growth: Refers to the expansion of a church in terms of membership size, attendance, spiritual maturity, and active participation of congregants.

• Retention: The ability of a church to maintain its existing members over time.

• Abuja: The Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, serving as the geographic focus of this study.
