1.1 Background of the Study

In Nigeria, petroleum resources have remained the backbone of the national economy since the discovery of commercial quantities of oil in 1956 at Oloibiri in Bayelsa State. The oil sector accounts for a substantial percentage of government revenue and foreign exchange earnings. However, while oil exploitation has generated enormous economic benefits at the national level, it has also produced severe environmental and socio-economic consequences in host communities, particularly in the Niger Delta region.
The Niger Delta is one of the largest wetlands in Africa and one of the most important oil-producing regions in the world. It comprises several oil-producing states, including Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. The region is characterized by mangrove forests, freshwater swamps, and fertile agricultural lands that support farming and fishing—the primary livelihoods of rural communities. The introduction of hydrocarbons into soil systems disrupts nutrient cycles, reduces microbial activity, and affects water retention capacity.
