INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of Nigeria’s economy, contributing significantly to food security, employment, income generation, and rural development. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, smallholder farmers account for a substantial proportion of food production in developing countries, including Nigeria. However, declining soil fertility, land degradation, and excessive dependence on chemical fertilizers continue to threaten sustainable agricultural productivity.
Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most widely cultivated and consumed cereal crops in Nigeria. It serves as a staple food for households, a raw material for agro-processing industries, and a key component in livestock feed. Nigeria is among the leading maize-producing countries in Africa, yet average yield per hectare remains below global standards. Reports from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture indicate that maize yields in Nigeria are significantly lower than potential yields due to poor soil management practices, limited access to improved inputs, and inadequate adoption of sustainable farming technologies.
One of the major challenges affecting maize production in Nigeria is soil fertility depletion. Continuous cultivation without adequate nutrient replenishment has led to declining soil organic matter and nutrient imbalance. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of organic fertilizer adoption on maize production among farmers in Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State. By assessing adoption levels, yield outcomes, and associated challenges, the study aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for enhancing sustainable maize production.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Maize production plays a crucial role in ensuring food security and income generation in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State. Despite favorable agro-ecological conditions, many maize farmers continue to record suboptimal yields. One of the major contributing factors is declining soil fertility resulting from continuous cropping and inadequate nutrient management practices.
The widespread use of chemical fertilizers has provided short-term yield improvements; however, rising costs, inconsistent supply, and negative environmental consequences pose serious concerns. Many smallholder farmers struggle with affordability and accessibility of inorganic fertilizers, especially during peak planting seasons. In addition, excessive chemical fertilizer application may degrade soil structure and reduce long-term productivity.
Organic fertilizers offer a potentially sustainable solution by improving soil health and enhancing maize yield over time. However, adoption among farmers in Akinyele Local Government Area appears inconsistent and limited. Factors such as lack of awareness, labor intensity in preparation and application, limited availability of organic materials, and insufficient technical knowledge may hinder widespread adoption.
Moreover, there is limited empirical research specifically examining the direct impact of organic fertilizer adoption on maize production in Akinyele Local Government Area. Existing studies often focus broadly on soil fertility management without isolating the measurable effect of organic fertilizer use on yield performance in the local context.
Without a systematic assessment of how organic fertilizer adoption influences maize output, agricultural stakeholders may not fully understand its economic and agronomic benefits. This knowledge gap limits the development of targeted extension programs, subsidy policies, and training initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable farming practices.
Therefore, this study seeks to address this gap by investigating the impact of organic fertilizer adoption on maize production among farmers in Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of organic fertilizer adoption on maize production among farmers in Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State.
The specific objectives are to:

The study will test the following hypothesis:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between organic fertilizer adoption and maize production among farmers in Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between organic fertilizer adoption and maize production among farmers in Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to maize farmers by providing evidence on the effectiveness of organic fertilizer in improving crop yield and soil fertility. It will guide farmers in making informed decisions regarding sustainable nutrient management practices.
Agricultural extension agents and policymakers in Oyo State will benefit from empirical data that can inform training programs and policy formulation aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Development organizations promoting climate-smart agriculture will also find the study useful for designing intervention strategies.
Academically, the study will contribute to existing literature on sustainable agriculture, soil fertility management, and maize production in Nigeria, particularly within the context of smallholder farming systems.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on maize farmers in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State. It examines the adoption of organic fertilizers such as compost, animal manure, green manure, and biofertilizers, and their impact on maize yield. The study is limited to smallholder farmers and does not cover large-scale commercial farms.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Organic Fertilizer: Natural soil amendments derived from plant or animal materials used to improve soil fertility.
Adoption: The decision and consistent use of organic fertilizer by farmers in maize production.
Maize Production: The cultivation and harvesting of maize measured in terms of yield per hectare.
Smallholder Farmers: Farmers cultivating relatively small plots of land, primarily relying on family labor.
