INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the study

The choice of school for students is a critical decision that significantly influences their academic, social, and emotional development. Parents, as primary care givers and decision-makers, play a vital role in shaping their children’s educational trajectory. Parental involvement in school choice is essential, as it affects students’ academic performance, motivation, and future prospects.

Research has shown that parental involvement is a robust predictor of students’ academic success (Henderson& Mapp, 2002). Parents’ participation in school choice decisions can lead to better academic outcomes, increased student motivation, and improved teacher-student relationships (Epstein,1987). Moreover, parental involvement helps bridge the gap between home and school, fostering a supportive learning environment conductive to students’ holistic growth.

However, the extent and nature of parental involvement in school choice decisions vary significantly. Factors such as socio- economic status, cultural background, and parental education level influence parents’ ability to participate in school choice (Lareau, 2000). Some parents may lack the necessary information, resources, or social capital to make informed decisions.

The importance of parental involvement in school choice is further underscored by the Nigerian government’s emphasis on education as a tool for national development (National Policy on Education, 2017).However, the country’s education system faces numerous challenges, including inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and inequitable access to quality education (Federal Ministry of Education, 2017). Against this backdrop, parental involvement in school choice decisions assumes even greater importance. Yet, there is a dearth of research exploring the specific factors influencing parental involvement in school choice within the Nigerian context.

• Parental Choice and Responsibility

Parents’ educational aspirations and expectations play a pivotal role in shaping their school choice decisions, which in turn, have profound long-term implications for students’ academic and career prospects. According to Spera et al. (2009), parents’ aspirations and expectations are critical factors that influence their selection of schools, ultimately impacting their children’s educational trajectory.

Parents’ educational aspirations refer to their desires for their children’s educational attainment, such as completing high school, attending college, or pursuing advanced degrees. These aspirations are often shaped by factors like socioeconomic status, cultural background, and personal experiences. Parents who value education highly tend to prioritize academic rigor, quality teaching, and resources when choosing schools.

Expectations, on the other hand, pertain to parents’ beliefs about their children’s potential academic achievements. Parents who hold high expectations for their children’s academic success are more likely to choose schools with strong academic reputations, experienced teachers, and challenging curricula.

The influence of parents’ aspirations and expectations on school choice has far-reaching consequences for students’ academic and career prospects. Research indicates that students attending schools that align with their parents’ aspirations tend to:

• Demonstrate improved academic performance and motivation
• Develop stronger social networks and relationships with peers and teachers
• Enhance their career prospects through access to resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities
• Experience increased emotional and psychological well-being due to a supportive learning environment.

By understanding the complex interplay between parents’ educational aspirations, expectations, and school choice, educators and policymakers can develop strategies to promote informed decision-making, enhance academic outcomes, and support students’ long-term success.

Another advantage of parental choice is that it helps avoid social conflict over what schools teach and how they teach it. There is a legitimate diversity of views about what constitutes the best form of education, and different parents have different values and priorities. In a school system that is funded by taxpayers and run by the government, people with mutually exclusive values or priorities are forced into conflict with each other. By contract, a system of parental choice allows parents to choose the schools that best align with their values, thereby avoiding unnecessary conflict.

Along with parental choice should come a degree of parental financial responsibility. As both Nobel laureate economist Milton Friedman and Roman attorney Pliny the younger have noted, people tend to spend their own money more wisely and efficiently than they spend others’ money. Across the centuries and around the world, education systems in which parents pay at least some of the cost directly are associated with significantly better student outcomes.

• Educational Choice and Accountability

Educational choice and accountability are critical components of modern education systems influencing students’ outcomes and school performance. Parental involvement in school choice promotes accountability as parents demand quality education.

Research highlights the significance of accountability measures, such as standardized testing and school report cards, in ensuring schools prioritize students learning (Carnoy & Loeb 2002). These measures provide parents with essential information for informed decision making.

Effective accountability systems empower parents to hold schools accountable for academic performance and resource allocation (Hoxby 2000). This promotes a culture of transparency and responsiveness to parental concerns.

According to Rehman, Khan, Tariq and Tasleem (2010), quality of education is determined largely by the learning environment in the school. This include buildings and facilities in a good condition, to allow for personal and social development of learners. Parents, therefore, prefer schools that safety, convenience and desirability (Yaacob Osman& Bachok, 2014). In both Malaysia and Pakistan, most parents refer private school due to good educational facilities and a conductive learning environment (Rehman, et al., 2010: Yaacob et al., 2014).

Academic performance often determines a school’s attractiveness to parents. Parents prefer a school where their children are likely to achieve high academic results. For parents who choose private schools and the general public, there is a perception that high academic standards make some schools academically superior (fung & Lam, 2011). Parents are therefor, likely to choose a school based on its academic performance (Yacob etal., 2014). According to Yaacob, etal (2014), parents in Malaysia prefer schools with high academic performance to ensure their children’s future education. Rehma et al. (2010) found that in Pakistan, parents prefer private school due to good examination results. They also believe that small class sizes in private schools promote overall development and self – confidence of children and avoid government schools due to overcrowding. The interplay between educational choice and accountability informs policy debates on school reform and parental empowerment (Chubb & Moe, 1990).

Parents in Nigeria, most especially in South Western states like Ogun State prefer private schools which have better infrastructure compared to government schools that are characterized by insufficient classrooms and overcrowding (Onuka & Arowojoju, 2008: Tooley & Yugstrom 2014), Private schools are rated by parents higher than government schools in terms of academic performance (Onuka & Arowojoju, 2008: Adebayo, 2009). While a majority of parents who either chose government or low-cost privte schools consider proximity to home as the most important factor, parents of children in high cost private schools place greater importance on academic achievement (Tooley & Yngstrom, 2014). This implies that some parents will choose high academic performance regardless of cost.

Parents actively choose the schools in which to enroll their children. They base their choices on varied preferences and criteria. They rationally and logically consider a combination of several impact and make school choices informed by more than a single impact. However, the impact vary among different parents. This research therefore seeks to look into impact of parental influence on the choice of schools in Ado- Odo Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State

• Problem Statement

Education is a vital instrument for societal development, and the foundation of this process lies in the selection of an appropriate educational institution. The decision regarding which school to attend has far-reaching implications for students’ academic, social, and future prospects.

However, research indicates that parental influence plays a significant role in shaping this decision, often prioritizing convenience, affordability, or personal biases over academic quality. In Nigeria, particularly in Ado-Odo/Ota, Ogun State, parental factors such as socioeconomic status, educational background, and cultural values substantially impact school choice. This phenomenon can result in students attending schools that fail to align with their academic needs, interests, or career aspirations.

Consequently, students may experience decreased motivation, lower academic achievement, and reduced opportunities for social mobility.

Furthermore, the scarcity of empirical research on parental influence in school choice within the Ado-Odo/Ota context hinders the development of evidence-based policies to support informed decision-making. The absence of a comprehensive guide for parents exacerbates this challenge, leading to a lack of standardization in school selection. Socioeconomic disparities and limited access to quality education, particularly in rural areas, further complicate the school choice process. To address these concerns, this study investigates the impact of parental influence on school choice, identifying strategies to enhance informed decision-making and improve student outcomes.

• Purpose of the Study

The primary aim of the study is to investigate the impact of parental involvement on the choice of school for students in Nigeria. Specifically the study seeks to examine the factors that influence parental decision- making when selecting a school for their children and how these decisions affect students’ academic performance, social development and future prospects. However, the specific objectives are:

1. To investigate the level of parental influence on school choice for their children
2. To examine the relationship between parental involvement and student academic performance

• To provide an in- depth analysis of the factors considered by parents when choosing a schools

1. Determine the challenges faced by parents in making informed decisions about school selection
   • Research Questions

The study was guided by the following questions

1. To what extent do parents influence the choice of school for their children ?
2. What factors influence parental decision- making when selecting a school for their children?

• Is there a significant relationship between parental involvement and student academic performance

1. Are there variations in parental involvement across different socioeconomic groups?

• Scope and Delimitation

The study aims at studying public and private schools in Ado odo Ota but data samples will be collected from four randomly selected (two each) public and private secondary schools within Ado Odo ota local government area, Ogun State  to show the similarities and differences in choice of school in both categories of schools. The schools are Rosemma College, Heart of praise schools, Osi secondary school, and Ajobode Senior Secondary School. The first two schools are private schools while the last are public schools. The delimitation was made because the researcher considered the limited time frame of the research.

• Significance of the Study

The finding of the study will be useful in providing information to the Ogun State Ministry of education on what parents rank as important when choosing a school for

their children. It will also benefit parents by highlighting the importance of their involvement in school choice decisions and providing guidance on effective ways to participate in their children’s education.

The Ministry of Education and policy makers may use the information to determine effective, efficient and equitable resource allocation to public schools. The findings will also be useful in providing insights into the influence of physical facilities, schools’ academic performance, pupil- teacher ratio and proximity to area of residence on the curriculum implementation process.

• Operational Definition of Terms

For the purpose of this study, the following terms are operationally defined:

Parental involvement: refers to the participation of parents in their children’s education, encompassing various forms of engagement, including decision-making, communication, and activities supporting academic success.

School choice: the process by which parents select a school for their children, considering factors such as academic quality, location, and extracurricular opportunities.

Academic performance: encompasses students’ achievement in academic subjects, measured through grades, test scores, and other evaluative criteria.

Parental factors: include socioeconomic status, educational background, cultural values, and aspirations, which influence parental involvement in school choice decisions.

School factors: comprise school characteristics, resources, and policies influencing parental involvement, such as teacher quality, curriculum offerings, and extracurricular activities.

Student outcomes: encompass academic achievement, motivation, and social development, reflecting the holistic impact of parental involvement on students’ educational experiences.

Parent-school: partnership denotes collaboration between parents and schools to support student learning, characterized by mutual respect, open communication, and shared responsibilities.

Educational aspirations: refer to parents’ expectations for their children’s educational attainment, influencing school choice decisions.
