CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The role of religious leaders, particularly pastors, in shaping the spiritual and moral life of congregants has been a subject of interest for scholars in religious studies and sociology (Canda & Furman, 2010). Pastors are often seen as moral exemplars whose personal lives influence the faith, trust, and engagement of church members. Their lifestyle choices, including marital practices, can either enhance or undermine their credibility and spiritual authority (Hunsberger & Jackson, 2005).

Polygamy, the practice of having more than one wife simultaneously, is culturally and religiously practiced in some African societies and is legally recognized in certain jurisdictions (Adeyemi, 2012). However, within Christian contexts, polygamy is often a contentious issue, particularly where biblical teachings emphasize monogamy as the ideal marital structure (1 Timothy 3:2; Titus 1:6). The intersection of pastoral polygamy and congregational faith has not been extensively studied, despite anecdotal evidence suggesting that congregants’ trust and faith may be affected when their spiritual leader engages in polygamous relationships (Oladele, 2018).

The faith of church members encompasses trust in God, commitment to church teachings, and active participation in spiritual activities (Miller & Thoresen, 2003). When a pastor’s marital choices are perceived as morally or doctrinally controversial, members may experience cognitive dissonance, doubt church teachings, or even disengage from religious participation (Johnson, 2015). Conversely, in cultural contexts where polygamy is socially accepted, congregants may reconcile such practices with their faith if the pastor demonstrates spiritual integrity in other areas of leadership (Okoro, 2016).

Despite the widespread discussion on pastoral integrity and marital ethics, there remains limited empirical research on the direct impact of a pastor’s polygamous marriage on the faith and religious commitment of church members. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring how members perceive their pastor’s polygamy and how it influences their personal faith and engagement in church activities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Pastoral leaders are expected to embody spiritual and moral standards that reflect the teachings of their faith. However, when a pastor engages in polygamy, it may challenge the moral expectations of church members, potentially leading to a crisis of faith or decreased religious participation (Oladele, 2018). Some members may question the pastor’s credibility, causing friction in the congregation and reducing trust in leadership (Hunsberger & Jackson, 2005).

On the other hand, in societies where polygamy is culturally normalized, members may struggle to reconcile traditional norms with church doctrines, creating tension and confusion in faith practice (Adeyemi, 2012). This duality presents a critical problem for church growth, spiritual guidance, and pastoral effectiveness. Understanding how pastoral polygamy affects members’ faith is essential for developing strategies that maintain spiritual integrity and promote congregational cohesion.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of a pastor’s polygamous marriage on the faith of church members. The specific objectives are:

1. To determine the influence of pastoral polygamy on members’ trust in their pastor.

2. To assess how pastoral polygamy affects members’ personal faith and spiritual commitment.

3. To examine the relationship between pastoral polygamy and members’ participation in church activities.

4. To explore congregants’ perceptions of moral and doctrinal implications of pastoral polygamy.

5. To provide recommendations for church leadership on managing pastoral marital practices in relation to congregational faith.

1.5 Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant impact of a pastor’s polygamous marriage on the faith of church members.
H₁: There is a significant impact of a pastor’s polygamous marriage on the faith of church members.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several stakeholders:

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study will focus on churches in regions where polygamy is culturally practiced, particularly examining members’ perceptions and faith responses to their pastor’s polygamous marriage. The research will employ both quantitative and qualitative methods to collect data from congregants and church leaders, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Pastor: A religious leader responsible for guiding, teaching, and caring for the members of a church.

• Polygamy: The practice of having more than one spouse simultaneously.
