Project – Impact of Small-Group Fellowship on Spiritual Growth and Church Participation among Christian Youths: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Benin City, Edo State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Christianity is fundamentally a faith that calls believers into relationship with God and into meaningful fellowship with other believers. From the biblical account of the early church, fellowship was not regarded as an optional activity but as an important component of Christian life and discipleship. Acts 2:42 records that the early believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayers, demonstrating that spiritual development took place within a community of faith. Similarly, Hebrews 10:24–25 encourages believers not to neglect assembling together but to encourage one another toward love and good works. These biblical principles suggest that Christian spiritual growth is not intended to occur in isolation but through teaching, prayer, mutual encouragement, accountability and service within the body of Christ. In contemporary Christian ministry, small-group fellowship represents one practical expression of this biblical pattern because it provides a relatively intimate environment in which believers can study Scripture, pray, share experiences, receive encouragement and participate in Christian service. Scholarly literature on small-group ministry similarly identifies small groups as an important context for Christian formation, particularly because they combine relationships, learning and practical application of Christian teaching (Rynsburger & Lamport, 2008).

Small-group fellowship can be understood as an organised gathering of a relatively small number of Christians who meet regularly for purposes such as Bible study, prayer, worship, discipleship, mutual support, evangelism and Christian service. Unlike large congregational worship, where interaction between individual members may be limited by the size of the congregation, small groups create opportunities for greater personal contact and participation. The development of the modern small-group movement has increasingly positioned such groups as a context for Christian formation within local churches. Atkinson and Rose (2020) explain that the modern small-group ministry movement developed significantly from the 1960s and gradually became an important alternative or complement to traditional Sunday-school structures for Christian formation. Similarly, Donahue and Gowler (2014) note that small groups have become widely accepted in churches as a means of building community and encouraging spiritual growth. The importance of this approach is particularly relevant to young Christians because young adulthood is a period in which individuals develop values, establish relationships, make independent decisions and negotiate their religious identity. A structured small-group environment can therefore provide young Christians with relationships and guidance that complement the larger worship experience.

Spiritual growth is another important dimension of Christian discipleship that gives significance to small-group fellowship. Spiritual growth involves progressive development in one’s relationship with God, understanding of Scripture, prayer life, Christian character, obedience, love, service and ability to live out the Christian faith. The New Testament presents Christian maturity as an ongoing process in which believers are expected to grow in grace and knowledge (2 Peter 3:18), become increasingly conformed to Christ (Romans 8:29), and develop toward maturity in the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:11–16). Small groups can contribute to this process by creating opportunities for believers to discuss biblical teachings, ask questions, share personal challenges and receive guidance from more mature Christians. Walton (2011), based on research involving church-based small groups, found that participants frequently valued small groups as a means of spiritual growth, although the study also cautioned that groups can become overly focused on mutual support unless they remain connected to broader discipleship and kingdom purposes. Thus, the spiritual effectiveness of small-group fellowship depends not merely on meeting together but on the quality, purpose and direction of the fellowship.

The relationship between small-group fellowship and youth development is particularly important because young people occupy a strategic position in the continuity of the Christian church. Youths and young adults require more than periodic attendance at worship services if they are to develop stable Christian convictions and become active participants in the life of the church. Youth ministry can provide instruction, mentoring, friendship, leadership opportunities and a sense of belonging, all of which may contribute to continued religious involvement. Snell (2009), using longitudinal data from the National Study of Youth and Religion, examined the outcomes of religious youth-group participation and found evidence of relationships between youth-group participation and outcomes involving adult support, church connections and moral values, while also recognising the role of self-selection. This finding suggests that organised religious groups may provide social and religious resources that influence young people’s continuing relationship with the church. For Pentecostal churches, where youth ministries, cell groups, house fellowships, Bible-study groups and other participatory activities are common, small-group fellowship may therefore constitute an important mechanism through which young adults are integrated into the life and mission of the church.

The Nigerian Pentecostal context provides an especially important setting for examining small-group fellowship because Pentecostal Christianity has become a major component of the country’s contemporary religious landscape. Nigerian Pentecostalism has developed through several historical phases and has placed considerable emphasis on personal conversion, holiness, prayer, biblical teaching, the work of the Holy Spirit, evangelism and active participation in Christian communities. Wariboko (2018) describes Nigerian Pentecostalism as a multidisciplinary and deeply contextual religious movement whose development has been shaped by Nigeria’s social, cultural and historical environment. Similarly, Pew Research Center’s study of Pentecostalism in Nigeria found that renewalist Christians constituted a substantial proportion of Nigerian Protestants and that Pentecostal religious practice commonly emphasises experiences and activities associated with the Holy Spirit. These characteristics create a ministry environment in which fellowship, discipleship, prayer and participatory Christian activities can become important instruments for developing the faith of younger believers. Consequently, the effectiveness of small-group fellowship deserves attention within Nigerian Pentecostal churches, particularly as churches seek to retain young people and deepen their commitment beyond attendance at major worship services.

The relevance of this issue is further strengthened by evidence that religious participation in Nigeria remains relatively high. Pew Research Center reported substantial levels of religious commitment and practice among Nigerians, including high levels of belief in God and frequent religious practices. More recent Pew findings indicate that Nigeria has one of the highest reported rates of regular religious-service attendance among the countries surveyed, with 96% of Nigerian adults reporting attendance at a religious service or house of worship at least monthly. However, frequent attendance at church does not necessarily mean that every participant is experiencing corresponding spiritual transformation, personal discipleship or meaningful involvement in church life. This distinction is important because church participation may involve several dimensions, including worship attendance, participation in Bible study and prayer meetings, involvement in evangelism, service in church ministries, leadership activities and commitment to other forms of Christian fellowship. A young person may therefore attend a large Sunday service regularly while remaining weakly connected to other members or minimally involved in discipleship. Small-group fellowship may help bridge this gap by creating an environment where attendance can develop into relationships, accountability, service and deeper participation in the church community.

The issue is particularly relevant to Benin City, Edo State, where Pentecostal Christianity occupies a visible position within the religious and social environment. Existing scholarship on Pentecostalism in Edo State indicates the extensive presence and influence of Pentecostal churches in the state and draws attention to the challenges involved in effectively engaging young people. Ovbiebo (2021), in a study of Pentecostal missional orientation in Edo State, examined selected Pentecostal churches, including Church of God Mission, Living Faith Church, Omega Fire Ministry, Believers’ LoveWorld and Foundation Faith Church, and reported challenges concerning relevant strategies and programmes for youth empowerment. Although that study focused primarily on youth empowerment rather than small-group fellowship, its findings demonstrate the importance of examining how Pentecostal churches engage young people through practical and relational ministry structures. Benin City therefore provides a meaningful setting for investigating whether small-group fellowship contributes to spiritual growth and active church participation among Christian youths. The study is consequently designed to examine the impact of small-group fellowship on spiritual growth and church participation among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Benin City, Edo State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The Christian church is expected to provide an environment in which young believers can grow spiritually, develop Christian character and become responsible participants in the mission of the church. The biblical model of Christian fellowship presents believers as members of one body who should encourage, teach, correct and support one another (Acts 2:42–47; Hebrews 10:24–25). Small-group fellowship appears capable of providing such an environment because members can interact more closely than may be possible during large congregational services. However, the existence of small groups within a church does not automatically guarantee spiritual growth. Rynsburger and Lamport (2008) caution that relationships within small groups need to remain connected with biblical learning and practical application if meaningful spiritual growth is to occur. This raises an important concern about whether small-group fellowship in Pentecostal churches is actually producing the spiritual outcomes that churches expect among young adults.

A second problem concerns the possibility of a difference between church attendance and meaningful church participation among young Christians. A young person may attend Sunday services, special programmes and major church events without developing strong relationships with other believers or becoming actively involved in discipleship and ministry. Snell (2009) found that youth-group participation has relationships with church connections and other religious outcomes, but also noted the importance of self-selection in understanding such outcomes. This indicates that merely belonging to or attending a religious group may not be sufficient to establish that the group itself produces positive religious development. In Pentecostal churches in Benin City, therefore, there is a need to determine whether young people who participate in small-group fellowships demonstrate stronger levels of church participation than those who participate less frequently. Without empirical assessment, church leaders may be unable to determine whether their small-group structures are effectively connecting young people to the wider life of the congregation.

Another concern relates to the quality and effectiveness of small-group fellowship itself. Small groups can provide opportunities for prayer, Bible study, mentoring, sharing of personal challenges, accountability and service, but they can also become dominated by social interaction, routine meetings or discussions that have limited connection with intentional discipleship. Walton (2011) observed that church-based small groups can be highly valued for spiritual growth and mutual support but may also become oriented primarily toward members’ personal concerns if they are not connected with broader discipleship and mission. This raises questions about the extent to which small-group fellowships in selected Pentecostal churches in Benin City are intentionally structured to promote spiritual growth among young adults. It is necessary to examine whether participation includes meaningful Bible study, prayer, mentoring, accountability, leadership opportunities and practical Christian service, rather than simply measuring whether young people attend group meetings.

The fourth problem is the limited availability of context-specific empirical evidence concerning the relationship between small-group fellowship, spiritual growth and church participation among Christian youths in Benin City. Existing scholarship establishes that small groups can provide important contexts for community, discipleship and spiritual formation, while studies of Nigerian Pentecostalism demonstrate the importance and complexity of Pentecostal religious life. However, there remains a need for empirical evidence specifically examining young adults in Pentecostal churches in Benin City and determining whether participation in small-group fellowship is associated with measurable differences in spiritual growth and participation in church activities. The absence of such evidence may make it difficult for church leaders to evaluate the effectiveness of existing cell groups, house fellowships, youth fellowships and other small-group structures. Therefore, this study seeks to fill this contextual gap by investigating the impact of small-group fellowship on spiritual growth and church participation among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Benin City, Edo State.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of small-group fellowship on spiritual growth and church participation among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Benin City, Edo State.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

  1. examine the extent of participation of Christian youths in small-group fellowship in selected Pentecostal churches in Benin City;
  2. determine the influence of small-group fellowship on the spiritual growth of Christian youths;
  3. examine the relationship between participation in small-group fellowship and church participation among Christian youths;
  4. identify the major activities through which small-group fellowship promotes spiritual growth among Christian youths

1.4 Research Questions

The study will answer the following research questions:

  1. What is the extent of Christian youths’ participation in small-group fellowship in selected Pentecostal churches in Benin City?
  2. To what extent does small-group fellowship influence the spiritual growth of Christian youths?
  3. What relationship exists between participation in small-group fellowship and church participation among Christian youths?
  4. What activities of small-group fellowship contribute to the spiritual growth of Christian youths?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between participation in small-group fellowship and spiritual growth among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Benin City, Edo State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to Pentecostal church leaders because it will provide empirical information on the effectiveness of small-group fellowship as a ministry strategy for developing young Christians. The findings may help pastors, youth pastors, fellowship coordinators and church administrators assess whether existing cell groups, house fellowships and youth small groups are achieving their intended spiritual objectives.

The study will also be significant to Christian youths. It may increase awareness of the importance of meaningful fellowship, Bible study, prayer, accountability, mentoring and Christian service. The findings may encourage young people to participate more actively in small-group activities and to view fellowship not merely as a social gathering but as an important context for Christian discipleship and spiritual development.

The study will be useful to youth ministry coordinators and small-group leaders. Findings concerning the activities that most strongly contribute to spiritual growth may assist leaders in improving the content and structure of their meetings. It may encourage greater emphasis on Scripture, prayer, mentoring, personal accountability, evangelism and practical Christian service.

The study will also contribute to theological and religious education. Existing scholarship has examined small-group ministry, youth religious participation and Pentecostalism from different perspectives, but context-specific research focusing on the relationship between small-group fellowship, spiritual growth and church participation among youths in Benin City remains valuable. The study may therefore serve as a reference for students and researchers interested in practical theology, Christian education, Pentecostal studies, youth ministry and church growth.

Finally, the study may benefit Pentecostal churches in Benin City by providing evidence that can guide decisions concerning youth retention, discipleship structures and church participation. Since small groups can serve as platforms for relationships, discipleship and leadership development, empirical evidence about their effectiveness can help churches strengthen their ministry to young adults.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the impact of small-group fellowship on spiritual growth and church participation among Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Benin City, Edo State.

The geographical scope is limited to selected Pentecostal churches within Benin City, Edo State. The population of interest will consist of Christian youths/young adults who participate in the selected churches.

Conceptually, the study is limited to three major variables: small-group fellowship, spiritual growth and church participation. Small-group fellowship will be examined in relation to activities such as Bible study, prayer, mutual encouragement, mentoring, accountability, evangelism and Christian service. Spiritual growth will be considered in terms of Bible knowledge, prayer life, Christian character, obedience, faith development and commitment to Christian practices. Church participation will include worship attendance, involvement in church programmes, ministry/service participation, evangelism, leadership activities and participation in other church-based activities.

The study does not attempt to examine every factor that may influence youth spiritual development or church participation. Factors such as family background, socioeconomic status, denominational differences, personal psychology and social-media use may influence young people’s religious behaviour but are outside the primary scope of this study except where they arise incidentally in the course of the research.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
