INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

In the 21st century, the rise of social media has profoundly transformed how individuals communicate, learn, and interact. Social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter) have become integral to the daily lives of students. These platforms serve as spaces for sharing information, connecting with peers, and accessing educational resources. For secondary school students, who are in a crucial developmental phase of intellectual and social growth, social media offers both opportunities and challenges.

Social media has transformed the learning behavior of students by providing diverse platforms for communication, collaboration, and knowledge sharing. According to Junco (2012), the integration of social networking sites into students’ daily routines has redefined how they access, process, and exchange academic information. Platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram allow for group discussions, assignment sharing, and peer tutoring, thereby enhancing collaborative learning and motivation. Similarly, Tess (2013) argues that social media can serve as a pedagogical tool, promoting engagement and interaction beyond the classroom. However, the extent of its positive influence depends largely on the student’s ability to balance social engagement with academic responsibility.

Exposure to digital media has a dual impact on students’ cognitive development. On one hand, the use of social media can stimulate creativity, critical thinking, and digital literacy (Greenhow & Robelia, 2009). Students who actively engage with educational content on platforms like YouTube and Quora often exhibit higher problem-solving abilities and technological adaptability. On the other hand, frequent exposure to entertainment-driven and fast-paced content may reduce attention span and cognitive retention (Rosen et al., 2013). As adolescents’ brains are still developing, the overstimulation from social media notifications and multimedia content can interfere with concentration and memory formation, thereby affecting intelligence and learning outcomes.

The relationship between social media usage and academic performance has been the focus of numerous empirical studies. Kirschner and Karpinski (2010) found that students who spend excessive time on social networking sites tend to have lower grades due to distractions and reduced study time. In contrast, Al-Rahmi and Zeki (2017) observed that moderate and academic-oriented social media usage positively correlates with student engagement and academic achievement. This suggests that the impact of social media on intelligence and performance is not inherently negative; rather, it depends on the purpose, duration, and nature of use. Effective time management and guided online activities are therefore crucial in mitigating the negative effects of social media dependence.

Critical thinking and information literacy are vital components of student intelligence in the digital age. As social media becomes a major source of information, students must develop skills to evaluate content credibility and detect misinformation (Livingstone, 2014). However, the abundance of unverified information on social media can lead to cognitive overload and superficial understanding (Frison & Eggermont, 2015). While students gain rapid access to global knowledge, they may also adopt uncritical thinking patterns if not properly guided. Educators must therefore incorporate digital literacy training into school curricula to ensure that students use social media not just as consumers of information but as critical thinkers and responsible digital citizens.

Social media can enhance students’ intelligence by providing access to diverse knowledge sources, promoting collaborative learning, and improving digital literacy. Platforms like YouTube and LinkedIn Learning offer tutorials and lectures that supplement classroom instruction. Similarly, discussion groups on WhatsApp or Telegram can facilitate peer-to-peer academic engagement. However, excessive and unregulated use of social media may negatively affect concentration, cognitive development, and academic performance. Frequent exposure to entertainment content, misinformation, and online distractions may reduce attention span and critical thinking abilities among students.

In Nigeria, where internet access is increasingly widespread, secondary school students are among the most active users of social media. This trend raises concerns about how online engagement affects their cognitive processes, information retention, and problem-solving abilities. The debate continues among educators, psychologists, and parents as to whether social media enhances or diminishes student intelligence. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of social media on student intelligence in secondary schools, exploring both its positive contributions and adverse consequences.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The increasing dependence of secondary school students on social media for communication, entertainment, and information has sparked concerns about its influence on their intellectual development. Many students now spend several hours daily on social platforms, often at the expense of study time and academic engagement. Teachers and parents report a decline in students’ reading culture, attention span, and analytical reasoning. Furthermore, exposure to unfiltered online content may encourage superficial learning, copying, and reduced creativity.

While some studies emphasize the educational benefits of social media, such as collaborative learning and easy access to knowledge, others suggest that overuse leads to distraction and intellectual laziness. In Nigeria, limited research has examined how social media specifically affects the intelligence levels of secondary school students. This study, therefore, seeks to fill this gap by investigating how social media use influences students’ cognitive abilities, critical thinking, and overall academic intelligence.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of social media on the intelligence of secondary school students.
The specific objectives are to:

1. Determine the extent of social media usage among secondary school students.

2. Assess the influence of social media on students’ cognitive development and learning behavior.

3. Examine the relationship between social media engagement and students’ academic performance.

4. Identify the positive and negative impacts of social media on students’ intelligence.

5. Suggest strategies for promoting responsible social media use among secondary school students.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions guide the study:

1. To what extent do secondary school students use social media?

2. How does social media affect students’ cognitive development and learning habits?

3. What is the relationship between social media use and academic performance?

4. What are the positive and negative effects of social media on student intelligence?

5. What strategies can enhance the effective and responsible use of social media among students?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The following hypotheses will be tested in this study:

H₀₁: There is no significant relationship between social media usage and student intelligence in secondary schools.
H₁₁: There is a significant relationship between social media usage and student intelligence in secondary schools.

H₀₂: Social media has no significant effect on students’ academic performance.
H₁₂: Social media has a significant effect on students’ academic performance.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it contributes to understanding the complex relationship between technology, social interaction, and learning. The findings will help educators, school administrators, and policymakers to design interventions that encourage the productive use of social media among students. Parents will gain insights into how to monitor and guide their children’s online activities. Additionally, students themselves will become more aware of how social media affects their intellectual growth and academic outcomes. Scholars and researchers will also benefit from this study as a basis for further investigations into digital learning behavior and intelligence development in the Nigerian context.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the impact of social media on the intelligence of secondary school students. It will cover selected public and private secondary schools within a specific Local Government Area (to be determined by the researcher). The study examines various aspects of intelligence, including critical thinking, problem-solving, attention span, and learning ability. Only students within the age range of 12–18 years will be included. The study will limit itself to the most commonly used social media platforms among Nigerian youths—Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

1.8 Definition of Key Terms

• Social Media: Online platforms and applications that enable users to create, share, and exchange information, ideas, and multimedia content within virtual communities.

• Intelligence: The capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding, problem-solving, and adapting to new situations.

• Student Intelligence: The mental ability of students to think critically, analyze information, and apply knowledge effectively to academic and real-life situations.

• Secondary School: An educational institution providing learning for students typically between the ages of 12 and 18, following primary education.

• Academic Performance: The measurable outcome of a student’s learning, usually expressed through grades, test scores, or teacher evaluations.
