INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Education is widely regarded as a fundamental tool for national development and individual advancement. At the foundation of every educational system lies primary education, which plays a critical role in shaping the cognitive, social, and emotional development of children. In Nigeria, primary education serves as the bedrock upon which all other levels of education are built. It is at this stage that pupils acquire basic literacy, numeracy, and life skills necessary for lifelong learning and societal participation.

Academic performance at the primary school level is a key indicator of the effectiveness of the education system. It reflects the extent to which pupils have achieved learning objectives and acquired the knowledge and skills expected at their level. However, pupils’ academic performance is influenced by a variety of factors, among which teaching methods and the learning environment are particularly significant.

Teaching methods refer to the strategies, techniques, and approaches employed by teachers to facilitate learning. These methods determine how information is presented to pupils and how they engage with the learning process. Traditional teaching methods, such as the lecture method, often emphasize teacher-centered instruction, where pupils play a passive role. In contrast, modern teaching methods, including activity-based learning, cooperative learning, and learner-centered approaches, encourage active participation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among pupils. Research has shown that the use of interactive and participatory teaching methods significantly enhances pupils’ understanding and retention of knowledge (Adeyemi, 2010).

In addition to teaching methods, the learning environment plays a crucial role in influencing pupils’ academic performance. The learning environment encompasses both physical and psychological conditions under which learning takes place. Physical aspects include classroom facilities, seating arrangements, ventilation, lighting, instructional materials, and overall school infrastructure. Psychological aspects involve teacher-pupil relationships, classroom climate, motivation, and discipline. A conducive learning environment promotes concentration, engagement, and effective learning, while a poor environment can hinder academic achievement.

In many public primary schools in Nigeria, including those in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State, challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, inadequate teaching materials, poor infrastructure, and insufficient teacher training persist. These challenges can negatively impact the quality of teaching and learning, thereby affecting pupils’ academic performance. Studies have indicated that pupils in well-equipped and supportive learning environments tend to perform better academically than those in poorly resourced schools (Ajayi & Adeyemi, 2011).

Furthermore, the interaction between teaching methods and the learning environment is critical in determining learning outcomes. Even the most effective teaching methods may not yield desired results if implemented in an unconducive environment. Similarly, a well-equipped classroom may not improve performance if inappropriate teaching methods are used. Therefore, both factors must be considered together in efforts to improve pupils’ academic achievement.

Kosofe Local Government Area, being one of the urban areas in Lagos State, presents a unique context for examining these issues. While some schools in the area may have access to better facilities and trained teachers, others still struggle with inadequate resources and overcrowding. This disparity makes it important to investigate how teaching methods and the learning environment jointly influence pupils’ academic performance in this locality.

Despite various government interventions aimed at improving primary education in Nigeria, concerns about declining academic performance among pupils persist. This raises questions about the effectiveness of teaching practices and the conduciveness of learning environments in primary schools. Understanding the impact of these factors is essential for developing strategies to enhance educational outcomes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Pupils’ academic performance in primary schools in Nigeria has continued to generate concern among educators, parents, and policymakers. Despite efforts by the government to improve the quality of education through curriculum reforms, teacher training, and infrastructural development, many pupils still perform below expected standards in core subjects such as English Language and Mathematics.

One of the major problems identified is the persistent use of inappropriate teaching methods in primary schools. Many teachers continue to rely heavily on traditional, teacher-centered approaches, which limit pupils’ active participation in the learning process. These methods often fail to cater to the diverse learning needs of pupils, resulting in poor understanding and low academic achievement.

In addition, the learning environment in many primary schools, particularly in urban areas like Kosofe, is often characterized by overcrowded classrooms, inadequate instructional materials, poor seating arrangements, and insufficient facilities. Such conditions create distractions and discomfort for pupils, making it difficult for them to concentrate and learn effectively.

Another critical issue is the lack of integration between effective teaching methods and a supportive learning environment. In some cases, even where teachers attempt to use innovative teaching strategies, the absence of adequate facilities and materials limits their effectiveness. Conversely, schools with relatively good infrastructure may still experience poor academic performance due to ineffective teaching practices.

Furthermore, disparities in resource allocation among schools in Kosofe Local Government Area have resulted in unequal learning opportunities for pupils. While some schools benefit from better facilities and qualified teachers, others remain under-resourced, thereby widening the gap in academic performance.

The consequences of poor academic performance at the primary school level are far-reaching. Pupils who fail to acquire basic literacy and numeracy skills may struggle in higher levels of education, leading to increased dropout rates and limited future opportunities. This situation undermines the overall goals of education and national development.

Although several studies have examined factors affecting academic performance, there is still limited empirical evidence focusing specifically on the combined impact of teaching methods and learning environment on pupils’ academic performance in primary schools in Kosofe, Lagos. This gap necessitates a focused investigation into how these factors influence learning outcomes.

Therefore, the problem of this study is to examine the impact of teaching methods and learning environment on pupils’ academic performance in primary schools in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of teaching methods and learning environment on pupils’ academic performance in primary schools in Kosofe, Lagos.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the effect of teaching methods on pupils’ academic performance.
2. Assess the influence of the learning environment on pupils’ academic performance.
3. Identify the challenges associated with teaching methods and learning environments in primary schools.
4. Determine the combined effect of teaching methods and learning environment on pupils’ academic performance.

1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between teaching methods, learning environment, and pupils’ academic performance in primary schools in Kosofe, Lagos.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to:

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the impact of teaching methods and learning environment on pupils’ academic performance in selected primary schools in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
