CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Terrorism is a global phenomenon that undermines peace, security, and societal development. It is defined as the use of violence, intimidation, or threats to achieve ideological, political, or religious objectives (Hoffman, 2006). In Nigeria, terrorism has become a significant national security challenge, with attacks increasingly targeting religious institutions, schools, markets, and public gatherings. Religious communities, especially Christians, have been frequent targets of attacks by groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other extremist factions (Onuoha, 2014).

The Christian faith in Nigeria is rooted in communal worship, fellowship, and active participation in church activities. Terrorist attacks on churches, particularly during worship services, disrupt the spiritual and social lives of believers. These attacks result not only in the loss of lives and property but also in psychological trauma, fear, and uncertainty (Okafor, 2017). The fear of potential attacks has led to decreased church attendance, reduced participation in faith-based activities, and, in some cases, spiritual disillusionment among worshipers (Adeleke, 2018).

The impact of terrorism on Christian faith is not only physical but also psychological and spiritual. Worshipers may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression, which can affect their ability to participate actively in religious activities. Moreover, communities may experience diminished social cohesion and reduced trust in public institutions responsible for security (Abubakar, 2019).

Nigeria’s diversity in terms of geography, culture, and religion means that the impact of terrorism may vary across different states. By focusing on three selected states—representing Northern, Central, and Southern regions—this study seeks to understand the multifaceted effects of terrorism on Christian faith, including psychological, spiritual, and communal dimensions. This research is crucial for informing policies and interventions aimed at sustaining religious practice and community resilience amid persistent security threats.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Terrorism has emerged as a serious threat to religious communities in Nigeria, particularly Christians, whose places of worship have been recurrently targeted. These attacks result in fatalities, injuries, destruction of property, and long-term psychological trauma. In addition to the physical consequences, terrorism negatively impacts Christian faith by creating fear, discouraging participation in religious activities, and disrupting communal worship practices.

Despite the prevalence of terrorism in Nigeria, limited empirical studies have explored its direct impact on Christian faith across different states. Many studies focus broadly on security challenges or regional terrorism but fail to address how these attacks influence religious commitment, church attendance, participation in church programs, and the overall spiritual life of believers. Without this knowledge, religious leaders and policymakers cannot develop effective strategies to safeguard worshipers and maintain spiritual resilience. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the impact of terrorism on Christian faith in three selected Nigerian states.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of terrorism on Christian faith in three selected states in Nigeria. The specific objectives are:

1. To assess the psychological effects of terrorism on Christian worshipers.

2. To evaluate the impact of terrorism on church attendance and participation in religious activities.

3. To identify strategies adopted by churches to sustain faith and ensure worshiper safety.

4. To explore the variations in the impact of terrorism across the selected states.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What are the psychological effects of terrorism on Christian worshipers in the selected states?

3. What strategies have churches adopted to sustain Christian faith amid terrorist threats?

1.5 Hypothesis

H₀: Terrorism has no significant impact on Christian faith in the selected states of Nigeria.
H₁: Terrorism has a significant impact on Christian faith in the selected states of Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant for several reasons:

1. It provides empirical evidence on the effects of terrorism on Christian faith, including psychological, spiritual, and social dimensions.

2. It informs church leaders and policymakers on strategies to enhance worshiper safety and sustain religious commitment.

3. It contributes to academic literature on terrorism, religious studies, and social resilience in Nigeria.

4. It raises awareness among Christian communities about coping mechanisms and preparedness in the face of security threats.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the impact of terrorism on Christian faith in three selected states in Nigeria, representing Northern, Central, and Southern regions. It examines psychological, spiritual, and social effects, church attendance, and participation in religious activities, as well as measures adopted by churches to maintain worshiper safety. The study is limited to incidents occurring over the last ten years.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

1. Terrorism: The use of violence, threats, or intimidation to achieve political, ideological, or religious goals.

2. Christian Faith: The beliefs, practices, and religious activities of individuals who adhere to Christianity.

3. Impact: The consequences—physical, psychological, spiritual, and social—resulting from terrorist attacks.

4. Psychological Effects: Emotional and mental responses such as fear, anxiety, depression, or trauma resulting from terrorism.

5. Church Attendance: Frequency of participation in organized worship services.

6. Participation in Religious Activities: Engagement in church programs beyond attendance, such as volunteer work, prayer meetings, and evangelism.

7. Security Measures: Steps taken by churches to protect worshipers from terrorist attacks.
