Project – Impact of Thanksgiving Services on Church Finance. A Study of Four Selected Churches in Rivers State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Thanksgiving services are an integral part of Christian worship, designed to acknowledge God’s blessings and providence in the lives of individuals and communities (Ojo, 2016). Typically, these services involve special offerings, tithes, testimonies, prayers, and communal worship. In many Nigerian churches, thanksgiving services are not only spiritual events but also serve as a means of mobilizing resources to support church activities and projects (Adeyemi & Oladipo, 2018).
Church finance refers to the monetary resources available to a church, including tithes, offerings, donations, and special contributions, which are crucial for operational costs, infrastructure development, charitable activities, and outreach programs (Ezenwaji, 2017). Strong financial health enables churches to expand their ministries, reach more members, and maintain sustainability. Consequently, events like thanksgiving services are often strategically designed to encourage generosity and enhance the financial base of churches (Okoye, 2020).
In Rivers State, where Christianity is widely practiced, churches of varying denominations organize thanksgiving services periodically to foster spiritual growth and financial support. These services often attract large congregations, including both members and non-members, providing opportunities for testimony sharing, offering, and community engagement (Ajibade, 2019). Research has shown that participation in thanksgiving services can influence members’ attitudes toward giving, increase their commitment to church activities, and generate additional revenue for church projects (Edet, 2015).
Despite the importance of thanksgiving services in sustaining church finances, empirical studies examining the actual impact of these services on church financial performance in Nigeria, particularly in Rivers State, remain limited. Understanding this relationship is essential for church leaders, financial planners, and religious scholars seeking to evaluate the effectiveness of thanksgiving services as a tool for resource mobilization and financial growth.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While thanksgiving services are widely observed in Nigerian churches, their direct effect on church finance remains underexplored. Although many church leaders claim that thanksgiving services boost tithes, offerings, and donations, there is limited empirical evidence to substantiate these assertions (Ojo, 2016; Adeyemi & Oladipo, 2018).
Some church members may participate primarily for spiritual or social reasons rather than financial contribution, raising questions about whether thanksgiving services consistently lead to measurable increases in church revenue (Okoye, 2020). Furthermore, variations in church size, denomination, and organizational strategies in Rivers State suggest that the financial impact of thanksgiving services may differ significantly across congregations.
This lack of empirical data limits church administrators’ ability to design effective thanksgiving programs that optimize financial outcomes without compromising spiritual objectives. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of thanksgiving services on church finance in four selected churches in Rivers State, providing insights into how these religious events contribute to resource mobilization and financial sustainability.
