Project – Influence of Church-Based Marriage Counselling on Marital Stability among Christian Couples: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Marriage is one of the most important social institutions through which individuals establish intimate relationships, form families and provide a framework for emotional, social, economic and spiritual development. Within Christianity, marriage is understood not merely as a legal or social arrangement but as a covenantal relationship characterized by commitment, companionship, fidelity, mutual responsibility and spiritual partnership. The biblical account presents marriage as a union in which husband and wife become “one flesh” (Genesis 2:24), while the New Testament emphasizes sacrificial love, mutual submission, faithfulness and care between spouses (Ephesians 5:21–33). In practical terms, however, the successful maintenance of marriage requires more than the initial commitment to marry. Couples must develop effective communication, emotional maturity, conflict-resolution skills, forgiveness and the ability to adjust to changing circumstances. Research among married adults in Owerri metropolis found that poor communication and faulty cognition were significant contributors to marital instability, demonstrating that the quality of interaction and thinking patterns within marriage can have important consequences for marital stability (Esere, Iruloh, Ojiah, Bukoye, & Chieke, 2015).
Marital stability refers broadly to the ability of spouses to maintain their relationship over time with a reasonable degree of satisfaction, commitment, adjustment, cooperation and continuity despite the challenges that may arise in family life. Stability does not imply the absence of disagreements; rather, it involves the capacity of couples to manage disagreements constructively and preserve their commitment to one another. In the Nigerian context, marital stability is influenced by interpersonal, psychological, cultural, economic and religious factors. A study conducted among couples in Southeast Nigeria identified love, effective communication and cultural factors as important variables associated with sustaining marital stability and recommended adequate counselling support for married couples. The findings are particularly relevant to Imo State because they demonstrate that marital stability in Southeastern Nigeria is shaped by relational processes that can potentially be strengthened through appropriate counselling and social-support interventions (Nzewuji, Uche, & Uche, 2024).
Church-based marriage counselling is an organized or semi-organized counselling service provided through a church or by pastors, ministers, trained counsellors, marriage mentors or other qualified church personnel to assist couples in understanding, improving and sustaining their marital relationships. Such counselling may address communication, conflict management, emotional intimacy, sexual relationships, financial responsibilities, parenting, forgiveness, trust, spiritual development and other areas that affect marital functioning. The church occupies a particularly significant position in the lives of Christian couples because it provides a religious community in which marriage is interpreted within a framework of biblical values and shared faith. Research on counselling in Pentecostal church settings indicates that church-based marriage preparation can provide couples with knowledge and skills that support marital success, while also emphasizing the need for pastors and church personnel to receive appropriate training to improve the quality of counselling services (Moeti, Madigele, & Moeti, 2024).
The potential importance of church-based counselling is further demonstrated by empirical research on the effect of marital counselling on marital stability in Nigeria. Reamen, Abubakar and Thomas (2022) investigated the effect of marital counselling on marital stability among married couples in Niger State using a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test control-group design. The researchers reported a significant difference in marital stability between the experimental and control groups after the counselling intervention and also found significant differences concerning communication among couples. This suggests that counselling is not merely a theoretical support mechanism but can provide practical strategies that improve relational outcomes. For Christian couples, church-based counselling may therefore serve as an accessible avenue through which marital problems can be identified early, communication can be improved and couples can be equipped with skills for managing disagreements before such difficulties become destructive to the marriage (Reamen, Abubakar, & Thomas, 2022).
Within Pentecostal Christianity, the role of marriage counselling may be particularly significant because Pentecostal churches generally place considerable emphasis on biblical teaching, prayer, spiritual discipline, pastoral guidance and the practical application of Christian principles to everyday life. Consequently, marriage counselling within Pentecostal congregations may combine conventional relational guidance with biblical instruction, prayer, spiritual encouragement and pastoral intervention. Evidence from a study of married couples in Living Faith Church, a Pentecostal denomination in Nigeria, showed that communication, conflict-resolution skills and stress significantly influenced marital health. The findings indicate that even among couples who share the same religious community and faith tradition, interpersonal and psychological difficulties can affect the quality of marriage. Church-based counselling that deliberately addresses these factors may therefore contribute to healthier marital relationships among Pentecostal couples (Obianenue & Ayodele, 2025).
The relationship between religion and marital outcomes also deserves attention because Christian couples may draw upon their religious commitment when dealing with marital difficulties. Religious commitment can influence how spouses understand fidelity, forgiveness, responsibility, sacrifice and perseverance within marriage. However, religious affiliation alone does not automatically guarantee marital satisfaction or stability. Agu and Nwankwo (2019), in their study of married couples in the South-East, examined religious commitment, intentionality in marriage and forgiveness in relation to marital satisfaction. Their work demonstrates the relevance of religious and relational variables in understanding the experiences of married couples. This suggests that churches have an opportunity not only to preach about marriage but also to provide structured counselling interventions that translate Christian values such as forgiveness, love, commitment and mutual responsibility into practical marital behaviours (Agu & Nwankwo, 2019).
Owerri Municipal Council provides an important context for examining church-based marriage counselling because the city is an urban centre in Imo State where Christian churches constitute significant social and religious institutions. Couples living in an urban environment may experience pressures relating to employment, income, housing, extended-family expectations, parenting, changing gender roles and the demands of contemporary life. These pressures can create situations in which couples require guidance beyond ordinary church sermons or occasional pastoral advice. The relevance of the present study is strengthened by the earlier Owerri-based research of Esere et al. (2015), which involved 600 married adults in Owerri metropolis and found that poor communication and faulty cognition were associated with marital instability. Although that study did not specifically investigate church-based counselling, its findings establish a strong local basis for examining interventions capable of addressing marital communication and relational difficulties among couples in Owerri.
Despite the potential of church-based marriage counselling to strengthen Christian marriages, there remains a need for context-specific empirical evidence concerning how such counselling actually influences marital stability among couples attending Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council. Existing Nigerian studies have examined marital counselling, communication, religious commitment, marital health and psychosocial variables, but these studies have largely focused on locations or populations outside the specific Pentecostal church context proposed for this research. For example, the Southeast Nigerian study by Nzewuji et al. (2024) focused on couples in Nsukka, while Obianenue and Ayodele (2025) examined married couples in a Pentecostal denomination in Ogun State. Consequently, it is necessary to investigate whether church-based marriage counselling in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council is perceived by Christian couples as contributing to communication, conflict resolution, emotional adjustment, commitment and overall marital stability. The present study therefore seeks to examine the influence of church-based marriage counselling on marital stability among Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Marriage is expected to provide companionship, emotional support, security, cooperation and a stable environment for family development. Nevertheless, many marriages experience difficulties that can gradually undermine the relationship between spouses. Problems such as poor communication, unresolved conflict, emotional distance, financial disagreements, mistrust, unrealistic expectations, interference from extended family and inadequate adjustment to changing responsibilities may create persistent tension within the home. Research conducted specifically among married adults in Owerri metropolis established that poor communication and faulty cognition were significant factors associated with marital instability. This finding is concerning because communication difficulties can prevent couples from expressing needs, resolving disagreements and developing mutual understanding. When such problems remain unresolved, they may contribute to dissatisfaction, separation or other forms of marital breakdown (Esere et al., 2015).
A second problem concerns the assumption that shared Christian faith automatically guarantees a stable marriage. Although Christianity teaches values such as love, forgiveness, faithfulness, sacrifice and mutual responsibility, Christian couples may still experience serious marital difficulties. Evidence from a Nigerian Pentecostal setting indicates that communication, conflict-resolution skills and stress significantly influence marital health among married couples. Similarly, research among Christian couples in Nigeria has examined the relationship between emotional intelligence and marital satisfaction, indicating that Christian identity alone does not eliminate the interpersonal and psychological challenges that affect marriage. These findings suggest that Christian couples may require intentional support systems that help them translate religious beliefs into practical relational skills (Obianenue & Ayodele, 2025; Abiodun, Ogunwuyi, Olaiya, & Araromi, 2022).
A third problem relates to the availability, quality and effectiveness of counselling within church settings. Churches often serve as the first point of contact when Christian couples encounter marital difficulties because pastors and church leaders are trusted sources of spiritual and personal guidance. However, not every pastor or church worker necessarily possesses professional counselling skills, and informal pastoral advice may not always be sufficient for complex marital problems. Research on counselling in Pentecostal church settings found that pastors need relevant training to provide effective counselling services and that congregants need greater awareness of the benefits of counselling. The study also concluded that church-based counselling for marriage needs strengthening. This raises an important question concerning whether marriage counselling provided in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri is sufficiently structured, accessible and effective in helping couples manage marital challenges (Moeti et al., 2024).
The fourth problem is the limited empirical evidence specifically connecting church-based marriage counselling with marital stability among Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council. Although previous Nigerian research has demonstrated that marital counselling can improve marital stability and communication, much of the available evidence has been generated outside Imo State or outside the specific Pentecostal church environment. Reamen et al. (2022), for example, found significant effects of marital counselling on marital stability among married couples in Niger State, while Nzewuji et al. (2024) emphasized the importance of communication, love and cultural factors among couples in Southeast Nigeria. In addition, Esere et al. (2015) established a local relationship between communication problems and marital instability in Owerri. However, there is insufficient evidence showing how counselling delivered within Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council influences the stability of Christian marriages. This knowledge gap provides the basis for the present study, which seeks to determine the influence of church-based marriage counselling on marital stability among Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The general purpose of this study is to examine the influence of church-based marriage counselling on marital stability among Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State.
The specific objectives are to:
- examine the nature and forms of church-based marriage counselling available to Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council;
- determine the level of marital stability among Christian couples in the selected Pentecostal churches;
- examine the influence of church-based marriage counselling on communication between Christian couples;
- determine the influence of church-based marriage counselling on conflict-resolution abilities among Christian couples
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide the study:
- What are the nature and forms of church-based marriage counselling available to Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council?
- What is the level of marital stability among Christian couples in the selected Pentecostal churches?
- To what extent does church-based marriage counselling influence communication between Christian couples?
- To what extent does church-based marriage counselling influence conflict-resolution abilities among Christian couples?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant influence of church-based marriage counselling on marital stability among Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study will be significant to Christian couples because it will provide information on the possible contribution of church-based marriage counselling to the development and maintenance of healthy marital relationships. The findings may help couples recognize the importance of seeking appropriate counselling when communication problems, conflict, emotional difficulties or other marital challenges emerge.
The study will also be significant to pastors, ministers and church counsellors. It may help church leaders understand areas of marital counselling that require greater attention, including communication, conflict resolution, emotional intimacy, forgiveness and commitment. The findings may encourage churches to strengthen structured marriage counselling programmes rather than depending exclusively on occasional pastoral advice.
The study will be useful to Pentecostal churches and Christian organizations in developing marriage-support programmes. Churches may use the findings to design seminars, workshops, counselling sessions, marriage enrichment programmes and follow-up services for married couples. The findings may also assist churches in determining whether their existing counselling structures adequately address the practical challenges faced by contemporary Christian couples.
The study will be relevant to professional counsellors, psychologists, social workers and family-service practitioners. It may provide additional evidence regarding the role of religious institutions as potential partners in promoting healthy family relationships. The findings may also encourage collaboration between professional counsellors and trained church personnel where marital problems require both psychological and spiritual support.
The study will contribute to academic knowledge in the areas of Christian counselling, pastoral ministry, family studies, marriage and religious studies. It will provide context-specific evidence concerning Pentecostal churches in Owerri Municipal Council and may serve as a reference for future researchers who wish to investigate church-based interventions and family stability.
Finally, the study may be useful to policymakers and organizations concerned with family welfare. Evidence concerning the relationship between counselling and marital stability can support broader family-strengthening initiatives, particularly those that recognize the influence of religious institutions within Nigerian communities.
