INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Mathematics is a fundamental subject in the educational system, providing students with essential analytical, problem-solving, and logical reasoning skills (Aina & Ogunsanya, 2018). Geometry, a branch of mathematics concerned with the properties and relationships of points, lines, surfaces, and solids, plays a critical role in developing spatial reasoning, visualization, and higher-order thinking among students (Owolabi, 2019). Despite its importance, students in junior secondary schools often perform poorly in geometry due to its abstract nature and the challenges in visualizing geometric concepts.
The use of Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) has emerged as a powerful strategy to enhance learning outcomes in mathematics (Onyeka & Nwafor, 2020). CAI refers to the use of computers to deliver instructional content, provide interactive exercises, and offer immediate feedback, enabling students to learn at their own pace and engage actively with the learning material (Igwe, 2017). In geometry, CAI can help students visualize shapes, manipulate geometric figures, and explore mathematical relationships dynamically, which may improve understanding and retention (Adeyemi & Olaniyan, 2021).
Studies have shown that technology-enhanced instruction, including CAI, can improve students’ academic performance and motivation in mathematics (Ajuwon & Falade, 2018). However, in many Nigerian junior secondary schools, traditional teaching methods—primarily lecture-based with chalkboard illustrations—remain dominant, limiting students’ interaction with abstract geometric concepts (Akpan & Effiom, 2017). This gap highlights the need to investigate the extent to which CAI can influence students’ performance in geometry and provide evidence-based recommendations for effective integration of technology in mathematics education.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Geometry is a vital component of the mathematics curriculum, yet many students exhibit poor performance at the junior secondary school level. National and regional examinations often reveal low scores in geometry, suggesting that traditional teaching methods may not adequately address students’ learning needs (WAEC, 2022).
One major factor contributing to poor performance is the limited use of Computer-Assisted Instruction in teaching geometry. Many teachers rely heavily on lecture and chalkboard methods without leveraging the interactive and visual benefits of CAI (Igwe, 2017). As a result, students struggle to understand spatial relationships, geometric properties, and problem-solving techniques, leading to low achievement and diminished interest in mathematics (Onyeka & Nwafor, 2020).
Despite increasing global advocacy for technology integration in education, empirical research on the effectiveness of CAI in improving students’ performance in geometry, particularly in the Nigerian junior secondary school context, remains limited. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the influence of CAI on students’ performance in geometry, with a view to providing practical strategies for enhancing mathematics instruction.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The general objective of this study is to examine the influence of Computer-Assisted Instruction on students’ performance in geometry in junior secondary schools. The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following hypothesis at a 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: Computer-Assisted Instruction has no significant influence on students’ performance in geometry in junior secondary schools.
H₁: Computer-Assisted Instruction has a significant influence on students’ performance in geometry in junior secondary schools.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study are significant in several ways:

It covers students in the first and second years to capture foundational learning experiences. The research is limited to schools with access to computer facilities to examine the practical implementation of CAI.
