1.1 Background of the Study

The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed the way individuals communicate, learn, socialize, and practice religion in contemporary society. The emergence of the internet, smartphones, social media platforms, online streaming services, and digital communication tools has created new possibilities for religious organizations to engage their members beyond the traditional physical boundaries of worship spaces. Within Christianity, these technological developments have contributed to the emergence of digital discipleship, a process through which believers are spiritually nurtured, taught, mentored, and connected through digital platforms. Digital discipleship represents an extension of Christian ministry that utilizes technology to facilitate Bible teaching, prayer meetings, spiritual counselling, worship experiences, evangelism, and faith-based interactions among believers. According to Campbell (2021), digital technology has become an important environment where religious identity, spiritual practices, and faith communities are increasingly formed and expressed.

Historically, Christian discipleship has been understood as a relational process through which individuals are taught, guided, and transformed according to the teachings of Jesus Christ. The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19–20 emphasizes the responsibility of Christians to make disciples, teach biblical truths, and support spiritual growth among believers. Traditionally, this responsibility has been carried out through physical gatherings, church services, Bible study groups, fellowship meetings, and personal mentoring relationships. However, contemporary technological changes have expanded the possibilities of discipleship by allowing churches to reach individuals through online platforms, mobile applications, social media networks, podcasts, and virtual communities. Digital discipleship therefore does not replace traditional Christian formation but provides additional channels through which spiritual development can occur.

The growth of digital discipleship has been particularly significant among young people because youths represent one of the most digitally connected groups in society. Many Christian youths increasingly use digital platforms as sources of information, social interaction, entertainment, and religious engagement. Social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other online communities have become spaces where young believers access sermons, devotionals, worship music, biblical teachings, and Christian discussions. According to Pew Research Center (2023), young adults are among the most active users of digital communication technologies, influencing how they interact with institutions, including religious organizations. This reality presents both opportunities and challenges for Pentecostal churches seeking to strengthen youth spirituality in a highly digital environment.

Pentecostal Christianity places strong emphasis on personal spiritual experiences, biblical teaching, prayer, worship, evangelism, and continuous spiritual growth. Pentecostal churches in Nigeria have historically demonstrated adaptability in adopting new communication technologies for evangelism and ministry expansion. From radio and television broadcasts to internet-based ministries, Pentecostal movements have consistently utilized available communication channels to spread Christian teachings. According to Ukah (2018), Nigerian Pentecostal churches have developed innovative approaches to religious communication, using media technologies to extend their influence beyond traditional congregational boundaries. Digital discipleship has therefore become an important strategy through which Pentecostal churches engage younger generations and sustain their spiritual participation.

Spiritual growth refers to the process through which believers develop deeper knowledge of God, stronger faith, improved moral character, increased commitment to Christian practices, and greater conformity to biblical principles. It involves activities such as prayer, Bible study, worship, fellowship, service, and personal reflection. For Christian youths, spiritual growth is particularly important because adolescence and early adulthood involve significant identity formation, value development, and decision-making. Fowler (1981) argues that faith development involves gradual processes through which individuals construct deeper understandings of belief, meaning, and commitment. Therefore, effective discipleship approaches are necessary to guide youths toward mature and stable Christian identities.

Digital discipleship practices may contribute to spiritual growth by increasing access to Christian resources and creating opportunities for continuous engagement with faith-related materials. Unlike traditional church programmes that occur at specific times and locations, digital discipleship allows youths to participate in spiritual activities regardless of geographical limitations. Online Bible studies, digital devotionals, virtual prayer meetings, Christian podcasts, and livestream worship services provide flexible opportunities for spiritual learning and participation. According to Hutchings (2017), digital religion has created new forms of religious engagement where individuals can participate in spiritual communities and practices through online environments.

Furthermore, digital discipleship may strengthen faith commitment among Christian youths by creating continuous connections between believers and their churches. Faith commitment involves the degree to which individuals demonstrate loyalty to religious beliefs, participate in spiritual practices, and integrate Christian values into their daily lives. Digital platforms enable churches to maintain communication with youths outside formal worship settings through inspirational messages, online counselling, discipleship courses, and interactive discussions. Such constant engagement may reinforce religious identity and encourage greater involvement in church activities.

However, the influence of digital discipleship on spiritual growth and faith commitment is not entirely straightforward. While digital platforms provide opportunities for spiritual enrichment, they also expose youths to competing ideologies, misinformation, secular values, and distractions that may weaken religious commitment. The internet contains diverse religious and non-religious perspectives, making spiritual discernment increasingly important among young believers. Campbell and Evolvi (2020) note that digital religious environments create both opportunities for deeper faith engagement and challenges regarding authenticity, authority, and the quality of online religious experiences.

In Nigeria, particularly Lagos State, Pentecostal churches operate within a rapidly changing technological environment characterized by widespread smartphone use, social media engagement, and increasing digital communication among youths. Lagos, being Nigeria’s commercial and technological hub, has experienced significant growth in internet accessibility and digital participation. Many Pentecostal churches in the state have adopted online ministry strategies, including social media evangelism, online prayer sessions, virtual Bible studies, and digital mentorship programmes. These developments raise important questions regarding the extent to which digital discipleship practices influence the spiritual lives and faith commitment of Christian youths.

The importance of studying digital discipleship among Pentecostal youths in Lagos State is further strengthened by concerns regarding declining physical church participation among some young people, changing patterns of religious engagement, and the influence of secular digital content. While digital platforms may help churches reach more youths, it remains necessary to determine whether online spiritual engagement produces meaningful transformation or merely superficial religious interaction. According to Cheong (2017), digital religion should be evaluated not only by the presence of religious content online but by its ability to influence believers’ identities, practices, and relationships.

The relationship between digital discipleship practices and youth spirituality has therefore become an important area of investigation within Christian studies, religious sociology, and pastoral ministry. Understanding this relationship can help Pentecostal churches develop effective strategies for integrating technology into discipleship while maintaining biblical principles and authentic spiritual relationships. Digital discipleship, when properly implemented, has the potential to strengthen youth faith, encourage spiritual discipline, and provide innovative methods for Christian formation.

Therefore, this study examines the influence of digital discipleship practices on spiritual growth and faith commitment among Christian youths in Pentecostal churches in Lagos State. The study seeks to determine whether digital discipleship practices contribute significantly to youths’ spiritual development and commitment to Christian faith, while also exploring the implications of technology-mediated religious engagement for contemporary Pentecostal ministry.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rapid growth of digital technology has created new opportunities and challenges for Christian discipleship, particularly among youths who represent the most active users of digital platforms. Pentecostal churches in Lagos State have increasingly adopted digital approaches such as online sermons, social media ministry, virtual prayer meetings, digital Bible studies, and online counselling to engage younger generations. However, despite the increasing use of digital platforms for religious purposes, questions remain regarding the actual influence of these practices on the spiritual growth and faith commitment of Christian youths.

One major problem is that many Christian youths are increasingly exposed to digital environments dominated by entertainment, consumerism, secular ideologies, and conflicting moral values. While digital platforms provide access to Christian teachings, they also compete with religious content by promoting alternative lifestyles and belief systems. As a result, some youths may experience difficulty distinguishing spiritually beneficial content from materials that negatively influence their faith and moral development. The challenge facing Pentecostal churches is therefore not only how to establish an online presence but how to ensure that digital discipleship produces genuine spiritual transformation.

Another problem concerns the depth and quality of digital religious engagement. Although many churches provide online sermons and inspirational materials, it is unclear whether passive consumption of digital religious content leads to meaningful discipleship, spiritual maturity, and stronger faith commitment. Traditional discipleship emphasizes personal relationships, accountability, mentorship, and community participation, whereas digital platforms may sometimes encourage individualistic and less interactive forms of religious engagement. This raises concerns about whether digital discipleship can effectively complement traditional Christian formation.

Furthermore, there is limited empirical research examining the relationship between digital discipleship practices and youth spirituality within Nigerian Pentecostal contexts. Existing studies on digital religion have largely focused on Western societies, while limited attention has been given to how African Pentecostal youths experience and interpret digital discipleship. Given the unique cultural, religious, and technological environment of Lagos State, there is a need for context-specific research that examines how digital discipleship influences spiritual growth and faith commitment among Christian youths.

The problem is also connected to the need for Pentecostal churches to develop effective ministry strategies for the digital generation. Without adequate understanding of how youths respond to digital discipleship initiatives, churches may invest resources in online programmes without clear evidence of their spiritual impact. Therefore, examining the relationship between digital discipleship practices, spiritual growth, and faith commitment is necessary for improving contemporary Christian youth ministry.

Consequently, this study seeks to address the problem by investigating the influence of digital discipleship practices on spiritual growth and faith commitment among Christian youths in Pentecostal churches in Lagos State.
