CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The family is the first and most significant social institution in a child’s life, serving as the primary agent of socialization, emotional support, and cognitive development (Ogunleye & Adeyemo, 2021). Within the Nigerian context, family structure—defined as the composition and organization of family members—has undergone significant transformations over the past decades due to modernization, urbanization, and socio-economic pressures (Eze & Okorie, 2020). Traditionally, Nigerian families were largely extended, with children growing up in closely knit communities where parenting responsibilities were shared among relatives. However, the increasing prevalence of nuclear families, single-parent households, and blended families has raised questions about the implications of these structures on children’s academic and social development (Olaleye & Adenuga, 2022).

Family structure plays a crucial role in determining the quality of educational support a child receives at home. Studies have shown that children from stable, two-parent homes tend to perform better academically due to consistent supervision, shared financial responsibilities, and emotional stability (Umar, 2019). Conversely, students from single-parent or broken homes may experience challenges such as financial strain, lack of guidance, and emotional distress, which can negatively affect their academic performance (Adamu & Ibe, 2020). Furthermore, the level of parental involvement in school activities and home learning is often influenced by family composition and economic capability (Adewumi, 2021).

In the Nigerian educational landscape, academic performance is often used as a measure of educational success and future socio-economic mobility. It reflects not only students’ cognitive ability but also the effectiveness of the learning environment and the level of family support (Olayemi, 2022). Family structure thus becomes a determinant of both access to quality education and the learning outcomes of students. With the rise in divorce, migration, and poverty, many students now live in households where parental support is fragmented or inconsistent (Okafor, 2021). This situation underscores the need to investigate how different family structures influence students’ academic outcomes in Nigerian secondary schools.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

There has been a growing concern among educators, policymakers, and psychologists about the declining academic performance of students in Nigeria’s secondary schools. While various factors such as inadequate teaching resources, poor learning environments, and socio-economic inequalities have been identified, the role of family structure remains underexplored (Eze, 2020). Observations indicate that students from two-parent households often exhibit better school attendance, discipline, and higher grades compared to those from single-parent or foster homes (Ogunyemi, 2019).

In many Nigerian communities, family disintegration resulting from divorce, death, or migration has created households where children lack adequate parental supervision. This lack of stability often results in behavioral problems, low motivation, and poor study habits, all of which can negatively influence academic outcomes (Adewale & Yusuf, 2021). Given these trends, there is a need for empirical investigation into the extent to which family structure influences academic performance among secondary school students in Nigeria.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of family structure on students’ academic performance in selected secondary schools in Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the different types of family structures among students in selected secondary schools.

2. Examine the relationship between family structure and students’ academic performance.

3. Determine whether students from single-parent families perform differently from those in two-parent families.

4. Assess the extent to which parental involvement mediates the effect of family structure on academic performance.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the prevalent family structures among students in selected secondary schools?

2. How does family structure influence students’ academic performance?

3. Do students from single-parent families perform differently from those in two-parent families?

4. What role does parental involvement play in the relationship between family structure and academic performance?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

• H₀: There is no significant relationship between family structure and students’ academic performance in selected secondary schools in Nigeria.

• H₁: There is a significant relationship between family structure and students’ academic performance in selected secondary schools in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it provides insights into how the changing family dynamics in Nigeria affect educational outcomes. The findings will help teachers, school administrators, and policymakers design interventions that support students from less stable family backgrounds. It will also assist parents in understanding the importance of emotional and academic involvement in their children’s education, regardless of family composition.

Additionally, the study contributes to the growing body of literature on family and education in Nigeria, offering empirical data that may guide social and educational policies aimed at improving student welfare and performance (Ogunleye & Adeyemo, 2021).

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on selected secondary schools in Nigeria, representing both urban and rural contexts. It considers family structure as the independent variable (categorized into nuclear, single-parent, extended, and step-family) and academic performance as the dependent variable (measured through students’ grades, teacher assessments, and school records). The study covers the 2024/2025 academic session.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Family Structure: The organization or composition of a household, including nuclear, single-parent, extended, and blended families.

• Academic Performance: The level of achievement demonstrated by a student, often measured through grades, test scores, or teacher evaluations.

• Single-Parent Family: A household headed by one parent due to divorce, separation, death, or single parenthood by choice.

• Nuclear Family: A household consisting of two parents and their children living together.

• Parental Involvement: The extent to which parents engage in their children’s academic, moral, and emotional development.

1.9 Organization of the Study

The study is organized into five chapters. Chapter One introduces the study, including its background, problem statement, objectives, research questions, and hypothesis. Chapter Two reviews related literature. Chapter Three presents the research methodology. Chapter Four focuses on data presentation, analysis, and interpretation. Chapter Five provides the summary, conclusion, and recommendations.
