Project – Influence of Family Structure on Students’ Educational Attainment and School Adjustment Among Secondary School Students in Ilaje

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is widely recognized as one of the major instruments for individual development, social integration and national development. Through education, individuals acquire knowledge, skills, values, attitudes and competencies required for effective participation in family, community and national life. At the secondary school level, education becomes particularly important because students are passing through adolescence, a developmental period characterized by significant physical, emotional, cognitive and social changes. At this stage, the home environment and relationships within the family can influence students’ attitudes towards school, learning, social relationships and educational aspirations.

The family is the first and one of the most important social institutions in which a child is nurtured and socialized. Before a child encounters teachers, classmates and other formal institutions, the child ordinarily experiences parental care, discipline, communication, affection and guidance within the family. The family therefore provides the initial environment in which children develop patterns of behaviour, self-concept, attitudes towards authority and expectations about education. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological perspective emphasizes that human development occurs through continuous interaction between individuals and the environments in which they live, with the family and school constituting important immediate environments in a child’s development (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). From this perspective, students’ educational development cannot be adequately understood without considering the social and family contexts surrounding them.

Family structure refers broadly to the composition and organization of a family, including the persons who constitute the household and the relationships existing among them. Common family structures include nuclear or two-parent families, single-parent families, extended families, polygamous families, stepfamilies and other arrangements created by separation, divorce, widowhood, remarriage or other circumstances. Family structure does not automatically determine the quality of children’s upbringing. Rather, the structure of a family can influence the availability of parental attention, economic resources, emotional support, supervision, communication and academic assistance. Consequently, it is important to distinguish family structure from family functioning. Two families with the same structural arrangement may provide very different levels of emotional, educational and material support to their children.

The relationship between family circumstances and children’s educational outcomes has attracted considerable attention in educational and developmental research. Amato (2005), for example, explains that family transitions such as parental separation and divorce can have consequences for children’s well-being, although the effects vary according to circumstances and the resources available to families. Similarly, McLanahan and Sandefur (1994) reported that children growing up outside two-parent families may face disadvantages associated with economic resources, parental time and social capital. These findings suggest that family structure may affect educational outcomes through several mechanisms rather than through family structure alone.

Educational attainment is another important dimension of students’ educational development. It refers to the level of educational progress or achievement attained by a learner over a period of schooling. At the secondary school level, educational attainment may be reflected in students’ academic results, successful completion of classes, progression to higher levels of education, acquisition of relevant competencies and ability to meet educational requirements. Students’ attainment can be affected by a combination of individual, school, peer, socioeconomic and family-related factors. The family is particularly important because parents and caregivers may provide financial resources for school materials, transportation and fees, monitor homework, communicate educational expectations and encourage regular school attendance.

Parental involvement is closely connected to this process. Jeynes (2007), in a meta-analysis of 52 studies involving urban secondary school students, found a significant relationship between parental involvement and academic outcomes. The study considered several educational outcomes, including grades, standardized tests and academic attitudes and behaviours. The finding demonstrates that the manner in which parents participate in their children’s education can be important for educational success. More recent evidence also continues to emphasize parental expectations as an important component of parental involvement and students’ academic achievement (Jeynes, 2024). Thus, regardless of the particular family structure, the extent to which children receive educational support and appropriate parental guidance may be important in determining their educational outcomes.

The issue of school adjustment is equally important. School adjustment refers to the extent to which students are able to adapt effectively to the academic, social, behavioural and emotional demands of the school environment. A well-adjusted student is more likely to participate appropriately in classroom activities, maintain positive relationships with teachers and peers, comply with school rules, develop a sense of belonging and respond constructively to academic demands. In contrast, poor school adjustment may be associated with absenteeism, poor classroom participation, behavioural difficulties, weak peer relationships, lack of school attachment and declining academic engagement.

Family experiences can influence school adjustment because students do not leave their family experiences at home when they enter the classroom. Emotional insecurity, family conflict, inadequate supervision or major changes in family relationships may affect students’ concentration, behaviour and interactions at school. On the other hand, a supportive family environment may provide students with emotional stability and confidence that facilitate positive adjustment. Research on family and school influences on adolescents’ adjustment has shown that parental academic support and school connectedness are relevant to adolescents’ adjustment outcomes (Lohman, Kaura, & Newman, 2007; Journal of Adolescence, 2015). This indicates that the family-school relationship should be viewed as interconnected rather than as two completely separate environments.

Family structure may also affect the amount of time and attention available to students. In a two-parent household, responsibilities for childcare, supervision and financial provision may potentially be shared, although this is not always the case. In single-parent households, one parent may have to combine economic responsibilities with childcare, supervision and educational support. In extended or polygamous households, children may have access to a wider network of adults and siblings, but parental attention and resources may also be distributed among a larger number of household members. These differences may influence students’ educational experiences. However, it would be inappropriate to assume that students from a particular family structure will necessarily perform poorly or adjust badly in school. The quality of relationships, parental involvement, economic circumstances and the broader social environment are also important.

The Nigerian educational context makes the issue particularly significant. Nigeria continues to face substantial challenges in ensuring that all children and adolescents participate effectively in education. UNICEF reports that Nigeria has a very large population of children outside school and emphasizes the importance of improving access, participation and learning outcomes, including at the secondary level. Such challenges make it necessary to examine factors within and outside the school that may influence students’ educational progress.

Within Nigerian communities, family arrangements have also changed as a result of socioeconomic pressures, migration, marital instability, separation, widowhood, remarriage and changing patterns of household organization. Such changes can influence the circumstances under which young people attend school. Some students may live with both biological parents, while others may live with a single parent, grandparents, relatives, stepparents or other caregivers. These circumstances may influence the type of educational supervision, emotional support and financial assistance available to students.

Empirical studies conducted in Nigeria have provided evidence that family structure and family-related characteristics may be associated with students’ educational outcomes. For example, Akinleke (2017) examined the impact of family structure on the academic performance of secondary school students in Yewa Local Government Area of Ogun State. Similarly, a study of junior secondary school students by Esuabana, Duruamaku-Dim, Arop and Okon (2022) found a significant difference in academic adjustment between students from monogamous and polygamous families. These findings suggest that family structure deserves continued investigation within specific geographical and educational contexts.

More recent Nigerian research has continued to examine the relationship between family circumstances and students’ academic outcomes. For instance, studies have investigated family structure, social support and academic performance among secondary school students in Lagos State. Other recent Nigerian research has examined family power structure and academic achievement among secondary school students in the Niger Delta region. However, findings from one geographical setting cannot automatically be generalized to another because family practices, socioeconomic conditions, cultural expectations and educational environments differ from one locality to another.

Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State provides an important context for examining this issue. Students in Ilaje experience family and community environments that form part of their daily educational experiences. Their family responsibilities, parental occupation, household composition, access to educational resources, parental supervision and relationships with caregivers may differ considerably. Such differences may affect how students attend school, participate in academic activities, relate with teachers and peers, cope with school rules and pursue educational goals.

The importance of studying Ilaje specifically also arises from the need to generate evidence that is relevant to the local educational environment. While previous Nigerian studies have examined family structure and academic outcomes in places such as Ogun, Lagos and other parts of the country, relatively little attention has been directed specifically toward the combined influence of family structure on educational attainment and school adjustment among secondary school students in Ilaje. Existing studies have often concentrated on academic achievement or academic adjustment separately. The present study therefore seeks to examine the issue from a broader perspective by considering both educational attainment and school adjustment.

It is also important to recognize that family structure should not be treated as a simple indicator of family success or failure. A two-parent family may experience conflict, neglect or inadequate parental involvement, while a single-parent or extended family may provide strong emotional, educational and material support. Therefore, the study does not assume that one family structure is inherently superior in every circumstance. Rather, it investigates whether differences in family structure are associated with differences in students’ educational attainment and school adjustment within the study area.

The theoretical foundation of the study is anchored principally on Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory. According to Bronfenbrenner (1979), children’s development is influenced by interacting environmental systems. The family represents an important microsystem because it involves direct and continuing interactions between the child and significant caregivers. The school is another important microsystem. The interaction between family and school constitutes part of the mesosystem. Consequently, students’ educational outcomes can be understood partly through the interaction between their home and school environments. The theory is appropriate for the present study because it recognizes that educational attainment and school adjustment are influenced not only by individual characteristics but also by relationships and environmental conditions surrounding the learner.

The study is therefore based on the view that family structure may influence students’ educational experiences through parental availability, supervision, emotional support, educational expectations, financial support, communication and family stability. These factors may subsequently affect students’ academic participation, school behaviour, relationships with teachers and peers, attendance and overall adjustment. Understanding these relationships can provide useful information to parents, teachers, school counsellors, educational administrators and policymakers seeking to improve students’ educational outcomes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Education is expected to provide young people with the knowledge, skills and competencies required for personal development and meaningful participation in society. However, students’ educational experiences and outcomes are not determined solely by what happens within the classroom. Family circumstances can significantly shape the extent to which students are prepared to learn, supported in their academic activities and able to adjust to school expectations.

One major concern is that students come to school from different family backgrounds. Some live with both parents, some with single parents, some in extended families, while others live with stepparents, relatives or other caregivers. These different family arrangements may create differences in parental supervision, emotional support, financial assistance, educational guidance and availability of learning resources. Where these supports are inadequate, students may experience difficulties that extend beyond their homes and affect their school experiences.

Another problem is the possibility that changes in family structure may expose some students to emotional and social challenges. Separation, divorce, parental death, remarriage or prolonged absence of a parent may require students to adjust to new household arrangements. Such transitions may affect students’ concentration, emotional stability, relationships and willingness to participate in school activities. Nevertheless, the extent of these effects may differ among students depending on the quality of care and support provided by remaining parents, relatives and other caregivers.

The problem is also evident in relation to educational attainment. Students who lack adequate educational supervision may have difficulties completing assignments, preparing for examinations and maintaining consistent study habits. Financial limitations associated with some family circumstances may also make it difficult to provide textbooks, writing materials, uniforms, transportation and other school-related necessities. Consequently, students may experience poor academic outcomes or reduced educational progression.

School adjustment presents an additional concern. Students who experience instability or inadequate support at home may find it difficult to adapt to school rules, maintain positive relationships with teachers and peers, participate actively in classroom activities or develop a strong sense of belonging. However, there is insufficient basis for assuming that all students from non-traditional family structures experience poor adjustment. Some students from single-parent, extended or other family arrangements may adjust very well because of strong parental commitment, supportive relatives, effective school counselling and positive peer relationships.

Existing empirical evidence demonstrates that family-related factors can be associated with students’ academic and adjustment outcomes. For example, Esuabana et al. (2022) reported significant differences in academic adjustment among students from different family types. Jeynes (2007) also found a significant relationship between parental involvement and educational outcomes among secondary school students. Nevertheless, findings from other areas may not adequately explain the situation in Ilaje Local Government Area because communities differ in socioeconomic circumstances, family practices and educational conditions.

The specific problem, therefore, is that there is inadequate localized empirical evidence on how family structure relates simultaneously to students’ educational attainment and school adjustment among secondary school students in Ilaje. Without such evidence, parents, teachers, counsellors and educational authorities may have limited information for designing appropriate interventions for students experiencing family-related challenges.

It is against this background that this study investigates the Influence of Family Structure on Students’ Educational Attainment and School Adjustment Among Secondary School Students in Ilaje.
