INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Biodiversity—the variety of life forms in an ecosystem—plays a critical role in maintaining ecological balance and sustaining human well-being (Wilson, 2016). Understanding biodiversity is essential for students, as it fosters environmental awareness, conservation ethics, and appreciation of natural resources. In secondary education, concepts of biodiversity are often taught through classroom lectures, textbooks, and diagrams. However, many studies have shown that theoretical teaching alone may be insufficient for developing a practical understanding of biodiversity (Olorunfemi & Eze, 2019).
Field trips offer a hands-on approach to learning, enabling students to directly observe flora and fauna, ecosystems, and environmental interactions in their natural settings. Experiential learning theories emphasize that active engagement with real-world contexts enhances retention and comprehension, particularly for complex concepts like biodiversity (Kolb, 1984). By participating in field trips, students can link classroom knowledge with tangible experiences, which may improve understanding and foster positive attitudes toward conservation.
In Nigeria, environmental education has received growing attention, yet practical learning opportunities remain limited due to challenges such as inadequate funding, limited transportation, and lack of structured programs (Adewumi & Ojo, 2020). Secondary schools in the Zaria and Kaduna metropolitan areas face these constraints, which can affect students’ exposure to local biodiversity and their ability to develop environmental literacy. Despite the recognized importance of field-based learning, there is limited empirical research examining the influence of field trips on students’ knowledge of biodiversity in Nigerian secondary schools.
Providing students with structured field experiences can help them identify local plant and animal species, understand ecological interactions, and appreciate the role of human activities in biodiversity conservation. Such exposure not only reinforces academic knowledge but also promotes environmental stewardship and critical thinking skills (Onwuchekwa & Nwachukwu, 2018). Consequently, investigating the influence of field trips on students’ knowledge of local biodiversity is crucial for improving science education and fostering ecological awareness in secondary schools.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Biodiversity education in Nigerian secondary schools is often limited to classroom instruction, which may not sufficiently engage students or develop practical understanding of ecosystems (Olorunfemi & Eze, 2019). Many students struggle to identify local species or explain ecological interactions because they lack direct experience with their natural environment. As a result, knowledge of biodiversity remains largely theoretical, leading to low retention and limited interest in conservation.
In Zaria and Kaduna metropolitan areas, schools are often constrained by funding and logistical challenges, making field trips rare or poorly organized. Teachers may lack guidance on planning effective field experiences, and students may not have access to protected areas or biodiversity-rich sites. This gap between theoretical instruction and experiential learning limits students’ understanding of local biodiversity and their ability to apply knowledge in real-world contexts (Adewumi & Ojo, 2020).

Addressing this gap can inform teaching strategies and promote the integration of experiential learning into environmental education.

1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Field trips have no significant influence on students’ knowledge of local biodiversity in secondary schools near Zaria and Kaduna metropolitan areas.
H₁: Field trips have a significant influence on students’ knowledge of local biodiversity in secondary schools near Zaria and Kaduna metropolitan areas.
Implication: Rejecting the null hypothesis would indicate that structured field trips enhance students’ knowledge of local biodiversity, supporting the integration of experiential learning into environmental education programs.

This study focuses on the influence of field trips on students’ knowledge of local biodiversity in selected secondary schools near Zaria and Kaduna metropolitan areas. It examines the effect of field trips on students’ knowledge, compares it with conventional classroom teaching, identifies challenges teachers face in implementing field experiences, and assesses students’ perceptions of these activities. The study is limited to senior secondary school students (SS2 and SS3) due to their exposure to environmental and biological science curricula.
