Project – Influence of guidance and counselling services in the career choice of secondary school students.
CHAPTER ONE:
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Career choice is a critical phase in the life of adolescents, representing the intersection of personal interest, ability, and societal expectation. The decisions students make at the secondary school level often set the foundation for their future educational and professional trajectories (Super, 1990). In Nigeria, secondary school students face numerous challenges in making informed career decisions, including a lack of awareness about diverse career paths, inadequate exposure to career information, and limited access to professional guidance (Ifejiofor, 2023). These challenges can lead to poor career alignment, resulting in frustration, unemployment, or underemployment later in life.
Guidance and counselling services are designed to help students navigate these challenges by providing structured support. These services aim to identify students’ interests, abilities, and personality traits while offering relevant career information to inform decision-making (Madueke, 2025). Properly implemented guidance programs equip students with the tools to evaluate options critically, consider the long-term implications of their choices, and align their career paths with both personal aspirations and market realities. In essence, guidance and counselling serve as a bridge between students’ current capabilities and future professional goals.
In the Nigerian context, the introduction of guidance and counselling in secondary schools is relatively recent, and its effectiveness varies across regions. While some schools have well-trained counsellors and structured programs, others suffer from inadequate staffing, limited resources, and a lack of standardized procedures (Ogunyemi & Oladipo, 2019). These disparities contribute to differences in students’ ability to make informed career choices. The uneven implementation underscores the need for localized studies to assess the actual impact of guidance services on students’ career decisions.
Adolescence is a developmental stage characterized by identity formation and the search for autonomy. Career choice plays a significant role in this developmental process because it reflects the adolescents’ self-concept and aspirations (Ginzberg, 1972). Without proper guidance, students may rely on external pressures, such as parental expectations, peer influence, or societal prestige, leading to career decisions that may not align with their abilities or interests. This misalignment can negatively affect their academic motivation and overall well-being.
Anambra East Local Government Area (LGA) is situated in the southeastern region of Nigeria, with a growing population of secondary school students. The LGA has both urban and semi-urban communities, where schools vary in infrastructure and access to resources. In many of these schools, career guidance services exist in theory but are often underutilized or inadequately staffed. Understanding how these services influence students’ career choices in this specific context is essential for designing interventions that address the unique needs of students in the area.
Research indicates that career counselling positively influences students’ career decision-making by enhancing their self-awareness and knowledge of available opportunities (Enwere, Okeke, Mbakwe, & Iloakasia, 2021). Students who have access to effective guidance programs tend to make more realistic and satisfying career choices. They are better able to match their personal strengths with career opportunities, thereby reducing the likelihood of career mismatch, dropout, or dissatisfaction. This highlights the critical role of guidance and counselling in fostering career readiness among adolescents.
Despite the recognized importance of guidance and counselling, studies in Anambra East LGA are limited. Much of the existing literature focuses on other states or regions in Nigeria, leaving a gap in understanding how localized socio-cultural factors influence the effectiveness of counselling services. Factors such as parental involvement, community expectations, and school resources may uniquely affect students’ career decisions in Anambra East, necessitating empirical research in this area (Ifejiofor, 2023).
Another challenge is the perception of counselling services among students and teachers. In some cases, students may view guidance and counselling as unnecessary or irrelevant, while teachers may lack adequate training to integrate career guidance into the school curriculum (Madueke, 2025). Such perceptions can hinder the effectiveness of counselling programs, reducing their potential impact on students’ career decisions. Understanding these perceptions is therefore critical for improving service delivery.
The integration of technology and career resources in schools can also enhance the effectiveness of guidance programs. Online career assessment tools, virtual career fairs, and digital mentorship platforms can supplement traditional counselling services, providing students with broader access to career information (Oladele, 2020). However, access to such resources in Anambra East remains uneven, with urban schools more likely to benefit than rural ones. Evaluating how these tools are currently utilized can inform strategies to optimize career guidance services.
In conclusion, career choice is a multidimensional process influenced by personal, social, and institutional factors. Guidance and counselling services in secondary schools play a crucial role in equipping students to navigate this process effectively. Investigating the influence of these services on students in Anambra East Local Government Area is essential to understanding their effectiveness, identifying gaps, and providing recommendations for enhancing career readiness. Such a study contributes to the broader discourse on educational development and human capital formation in Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the establishment of guidance and counselling units in secondary schools across Anambra East Local Government Area, there is limited empirical evidence on their effectiveness in shaping students’ career choices. While many schools have theoretically implemented counselling services, the practical application and utilization of these services often fall short of expectations. Counsellors may be overburdened, lack adequate training, or face insufficient resources, all of which can hinder their ability to provide meaningful guidance to students (Ifejiofor, 2023).
A significant number of students continue to make career decisions based on external pressures rather than informed self-assessment. Peer influence plays a critical role during adolescence, often leading students to pursue careers that are popular among their friends rather than those aligned with their personal skills and interests (Enwere et al., 2021). Similarly, parental expectations sometimes overshadow the students’ own aspirations, especially in families where certain professions are highly valued or considered prestigious, such as medicine, law, or engineering.
Societal trends and media portrayals of success further exacerbate the problem. Students may be influenced by celebrities, social media narratives, or perceived financial gains of certain careers without fully understanding the educational requirements, challenges, or long-term satisfaction associated with those professions (Madueke, 2025). This misalignment between perception and reality often results in career choices that may not lead to personal fulfillment or economic stability.
Another challenge is the limited awareness among students regarding the scope and purpose of guidance and counselling services. Many students perceive these services as irrelevant, advisory only in academic matters, or available only in times of crisis (Ogunyemi & Oladipo, 2019). Consequently, they may not actively seek career guidance, leading to uninformed decisions that could affect their academic performance and future employability.
The problem is further compounded by the lack of localized research in Anambra East. While studies have been conducted in other parts of Nigeria on the influence of guidance services, few focus specifically on the unique socio-cultural and educational dynamics of Anambra East. Factors such as school infrastructure, community values, and local economic conditions may play a critical role in how students perceive and utilize counselling services.
Given these challenges, it becomes imperative to investigate the extent to which guidance and counselling services influence career choices among secondary school students in Anambra East Local Government Area. Understanding this relationship will help identify gaps in service delivery, assess the effectiveness of existing programmes, and provide recommendations to enhance career readiness among students, thereby contributing to their long-term personal and professional development.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides valuable insights into the role of guidance and counselling services in shaping the career choices of secondary school students. By examining how these services influence students’ decision-making, the research will help identify whether current programmes meet the developmental and academic needs of adolescents. Understanding the impact of guidance services can assist schools in structuring more effective career counselling programmes that address both individual student needs and broader educational goals.
For policymakers, the findings of this study will offer empirical evidence to support informed decisions regarding resource allocation, staffing, and training for guidance and counselling units. Policymakers will be better equipped to design policies that strengthen counselling services, enhance accessibility, and ensure that all students receive adequate support in exploring and selecting suitable career paths. This can contribute to improved educational outcomes and more effective workforce planning in the region.
Educators and school administrators will also benefit from the study by gaining a clearer understanding of how students interact with guidance services. Insights into students’ perceptions, utilization, and challenges associated with counselling programmes can help teachers and administrators identify gaps in service delivery and develop strategies to encourage greater engagement. Enhanced collaboration between teachers and counsellors can ensure that students receive consistent support both inside and outside the classroom.
Furthermore, the study will empower students by highlighting the importance of career guidance in making informed choices. Increased awareness of the benefits of counselling services can motivate students to actively participate in career planning activities, leading to better alignment between their abilities, interests, and chosen professions. This proactive engagement can foster a sense of responsibility and self-direction among students during a critical stage of their academic development.
The research will also contribute to the broader educational community by providing data that can be used for training future counsellors. Understanding the effectiveness of existing services in a localized context can inform curriculum development for counselling education, ensuring that counsellors are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to address real-world challenges faced by students.
Lastly, the study adds to the existing body of knowledge on career development in Nigerian secondary schools. By focusing on a specific region, it offers a nuanced understanding of how socio-cultural, economic, and institutional factors influence career choices. The findings can serve as a reference for future studies, helping researchers, educators, and policymakers develop more targeted interventions to enhance career guidance and counselling services across the country.
