INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Biology is a fundamental science subject in the Nigerian secondary school curriculum that deals with the study of living organisms, their structure, functions, growth, evolution, and interactions with the environment. It serves as a foundation for many science-related disciplines such as medicine, nursing, agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental science. Despite its importance, students’ performance in Biology in external examinations such as WAEC and NECO has remained relatively poor over the years in many parts of Nigeria, including Ogun State (WAEC Chief Examiners’ Report, various years).
One of the major factors influencing students’ achievement in Biology is the availability and use of instructional materials during teaching and learning. Instructional materials refer to all teaching aids and resources that support and enhance the delivery of lesson content. These include textbooks, charts, models, specimens, audio-visual tools, diagrams, ICT tools, and laboratory equipment. When effectively used, instructional materials help to make abstract biological concepts more concrete, understandable, and engaging for learners.
According to Ema, E. O., instructional materials are essential tools that facilitate effective communication between teachers and students, especially in science subjects where abstract concepts are common. Similarly, Obanya, P.emphasized that meaningful learning occurs when learners are actively engaged through appropriate teaching resources that stimulate their senses and encourage participation.
In Biology teaching, many concepts such as cell structure, genetics, classification of organisms, and ecological systems require visual representation and practical demonstration for better understanding. Without adequate instructional materials, teachers may rely heavily on verbal explanations, which often leads to rote memorization rather than meaningful learning.
However, in many secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, there are challenges related to inadequate provision, poor maintenance, and limited use of instructional materials. Some schools lack modern teaching aids, while others have materials that are not properly utilized due to large class sizes, insufficient training of teachers, or lack of motivation.
The absence or improper use of instructional materials can negatively affect students’ interest, motivation, and understanding of Biology. This situation contributes to poor academic performance and weak scientific literacy among students. Therefore, it is important to examine how instructional materials influence the teaching and learning of Biology in secondary schools within the study area.
This study therefore investigates the influence of instructional materials on the teaching and learning of Biology in secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of Biology as a core science subject, students’ performance in the subject in Nigeria has remained consistently poor over the years. This trend is evident in both internal school examinations and external examinations such as WAEC and NECO. The persistent poor performance has raised concerns among educators, parents, and education stakeholders.
One of the key problems identified is the ineffective use or lack of instructional materials in teaching Biology. Many Biology concepts are abstract and require visual aids, models, and practical demonstrations to facilitate understanding. However, in many secondary schools, teaching is still largely dominated by the lecture method, with little or no use of instructional materials.
In Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, there are indications that some schools lack adequate instructional resources such as charts, models, microscopes, preserved specimens, and ICT-based tools. Even where these materials are available, they are often underutilized due to inadequate teacher training, lack of time, or poor infrastructure. This limits students’ exposure to hands-on and interactive learning experiences.
Furthermore, students often show low interest and poor understanding of Biology topics when instructional materials are not used effectively. This situation may contribute significantly to their poor academic performance and negative attitude toward science subjects.
Although several studies have examined instructional materials in science education, there is limited localized empirical evidence focusing specifically on the influence of instructional materials on the teaching and learning of Biology in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area. This gap in knowledge makes it necessary to conduct this study.
Therefore, this research seeks to investigate whether instructional materials significantly influence the teaching and learning of Biology in secondary schools in the study area.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of instructional materials on the teaching and learning of Biology in secondary schools.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- Identify the types of instructional materials used in teaching Biology.
- Determine the extent to which instructional materials are used in Biology lessons.
- Examine the influence of instructional materials on students’ academic performance in Biology.
- Identify challenges affecting the effective use of instructional materials in Biology teaching.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions guide the study:
- What types of instructional materials are used in teaching Biology in secondary schools?
- To what extent are instructional materials used in Biology teaching?
- How do instructional materials influence students’ academic performance in Biology?
- What challenges affect the use of instructional materials in Biology teaching?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between the use of instructional materials and students’ academic performance in Biology in secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between the use of instructional materials and students’ academic performance in Biology in secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be beneficial to students, teachers, school administrators, curriculum planners, and the education sector.
Students will benefit by gaining improved understanding of Biology concepts through the use of instructional materials. Teachers will gain insight into the importance of instructional resources and how to effectively integrate them into lesson delivery.
School administrators will be guided on the need to provide adequate teaching aids and improve school infrastructure. Curriculum planners such as the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will use the findings to improve curriculum implementation strategies.
The study will also contribute to existing literature on instructional materials and science education in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. It focuses on the influence of instructional materials on the teaching and learning of Biology among senior secondary school students. Other subjects and other local government areas are not covered in this study.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Instructional Materials: Teaching aids and resources such as charts, models, textbooks, specimens, and ICT tools used to enhance teaching and learning.
Teaching: The process of imparting knowledge, skills, and values to learners.
Learning: The process through which students acquire knowledge, skills, and understanding.
Biology: A branch of science that studies living organisms and their interactions with the environment.
Academic Performance: The level of achievement of students in Biology as measured through tests and examinations.
Secondary School: An institution of post-primary education for students typically aged between 11 and 18 years.
