INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Maternal health is a major public health concern in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where maternal mortality and morbidity remain high (World Health Organization [WHO], 2019). Antenatal care (ANC) and proper maternal health services play critical roles in preventing pregnancy-related complications and ensuring safe delivery outcomes (Campbell & Graham, 2016). However, several factors affect maternal health outcomes, including socio-cultural practices, accessibility to healthcare services, and household decision-making dynamics.

One factor that has gained attention in recent years is the involvement of male partners in maternal health. Male partners can influence maternal health outcomes by providing emotional, financial, and logistical support, encouraging ANC attendance, and participating in decision-making about delivery and nutrition (Ditekemena et al., 2012). Studies have shown that women whose partners are actively involved in maternal health are more likely to attend antenatal visits, adhere to medical advice, and experience fewer complications during pregnancy and delivery (Falade-Fatila & Adeoye, 2018).

In Nigeria, cultural norms in many rural communities, including Anyigba, often designate maternal health as a “woman’s responsibility,” limiting male involvement (Ojewale et al., 2020). This lack of participation can negatively affect maternal health outcomes, including increased risk of maternal anemia, preterm birth, and low birth weight. Encouraging male partner involvement is therefore critical to improving maternal and child health indicators. Despite the recognition of its importance, empirical studies examining the influence of male partner involvement on maternal health outcomes in Anyigba are scarce.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Maternal morbidity and mortality remain pressing challenges in rural Nigerian communities, including Anyigba. While interventions such as antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and maternal health education have improved outcomes, compliance with these services is often influenced by household support systems (WHO, 2016). Male partners play a critical role in supporting maternal health; however, in many communities, male involvement is limited due to socio-cultural beliefs, lack of awareness, and perceived gender roles (Ditekemena et al., 2012).

This lack of male engagement can lead to delayed antenatal visits, poor adherence to medical advice, and complications during pregnancy and delivery. Studies suggest that increasing male participation can enhance maternal knowledge, promote adherence to recommended antenatal schedules, and improve birth outcomes (Falade-Fatila & Adeoye, 2018). However, there is limited empirical evidence on the actual influence of male partner involvement on maternal health outcomes in Anyigba. Understanding this influence is essential for designing interventions that engage men in maternal health, thereby improving maternal and neonatal outcomes.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The study aims to examine the influence of male partner involvement on maternal health outcomes among pregnant women attending clinics in Anyigba. The specific objectives are:

1. To assess the level of male partner involvement in maternal health among pregnant women in Anyigba.

2. To determine the effect of male partner involvement on antenatal care attendance among pregnant women.

3. To examine the relationship between male partner involvement and maternal health outcomes, including birth weight, pregnancy complications, and delivery outcomes.

4. To identify barriers to male partner involvement in maternal health in Anyigba.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of male partner involvement in maternal health among pregnant women in Anyigba?

2. How does male partner involvement affect antenatal care attendance among pregnant women?

3. What is the relationship between male partner involvement and maternal health outcomes?

4. What are the barriers to male partner involvement in maternal health in Anyigba?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: Male partner involvement has no significant influence on maternal health outcomes among pregnant women attending clinics in Anyigba.

H1: Male partner involvement has a significant influence on maternal health outcomes among pregnant women attending clinics in Anyigba.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be significant in several ways:

• Healthcare providers can design interventions that encourage male participation in maternal health, improving maternal service utilization.

• Policymakers and health planners can incorporate male engagement strategies into maternal health programs, especially in rural communities.

• Pregnant women and families will benefit from increased support from male partners, leading to better adherence to ANC schedules and improved pregnancy outcomes.

• Researchers can use the study as a reference for further research on socio-cultural factors affecting maternal health and the role of male partners in sub-Saharan Africa.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to pregnant women attending selected public and private clinics in Anyigba. It focuses on male partner involvement, including emotional, financial, and logistical support, and its effect on maternal health outcomes such as antenatal attendance, pregnancy complications, and delivery results. The study does not include urban communities outside Anyigba or examine broader household health decisions unrelated to maternal care.
